1A

Post by Thegoldenjet »

I believe there are 4 teams capable of winning the championship. Albert Lea, Marshall, West and New Ulm. All 4 of these teams are capable of beating eachother any given night. Austin and East will have good teams but I don't think they can contend with these 4. I just have this feeling that Marshall will go through again and pull it off this time, just a feeling...

AL

Post by osiris69 »

There is only one top team in the section....AL. Roy gets those guys fired up and they will be the best team in the section this year hands down. The only team having a chance is West. Marshall and New Ulm cannot compete with these two teams.

AL vs. Mayo scrimmage

Post by goaler »

I caught AL in a scrimmage against Mayo on Saturday. Very dominating performance by AL, even without Mark Walton, who was hurt. In 45 minutes I think Mayo had three shots. AL must have had around 25 or 30. AL only scored two goals but that was a testimony to the two good goalers that Mayo played. They had plenty of work. Casanova on the other hand had the afternoon off, but still managed to give up one goal.

The rest of 1A better be ready for AL. This is a good team with lots of quickness and creativity up front. And yes, they are well-coached. They have to be considered the 1A favorite.

Does anybody have any info on Austin? If so, what is going on there?

Austin just hired a new coach after the hazing incident i think his name is Mike Wolf? check me on that but i think thats him... talking to austin players they say hes very strict but that they are happy to have it because thats what they need. I think after alot of work austin can maybe be a contender, they were dominated by AL on saturday but played pretty tough against Mayo so it will be interesting to see how the new coach handles them.

Yeah Austin's new coach is Mike Wolf. Austin needs to put in a lot of hard work but they could be a contender. Austin was dominated by AL but they played a lot better than I thought they would.

Mankato Scrimmages

It will be interesting to see what the each team has to offer. Basically all the teams there are expected to be favorites in the Section.

ALBERT LEA TO STATE.

Post by ZAMBONI »

OSIRIS 69 (AND) GOALER. " SLOW DOWN. " Remember what happened last year when they got beat out by Marshall in the playoffs. It just goes to show you what can really happen and they have the same coach. It's not the coach, it's the teamwork. The coach can only point them in the right direction and can't do it for them.

goph80,

Although not a strong who do you see as the favorite and why?

HOTSHOT, I mean, ZAMBONI: I thought it was agreed upon that East and Austin were the favorites at the beginning of last year? Do you think that a semifinal appearance by A.L. last year was an underachievement?

I'd point towards West and AL as the favorites this year, but they play the games for a reason!

AL is good ..

Post by goaler »

I do remember last year when Marshall beat AL. It was a great game and the Marshall fans were in seventh heaven. AL hasn't won anything yet of course, but I think they are going to tough in the section. I am looking forward to Friday to see how they stack up against other teams in the section.

By the way, Wasseca is going to be in Mankato as well.

West and Albert Lea are the top two teams, and Mankato West will end up going to state. There are my predicitons. It's going to be interesting when West and albert Lew play each other...definatly going to be some good hockey...and I can assure everyone that West will be well-coaced by mr essay.

I don't think anyone gave Marshall any respect last year. I didn't give them much thought, then they ended up taking out New Ulm and Albert Lea, it still doesn't seem like they've won anyone over, they play Austin in a couple of weeks, their first test, it will be interesting to see what they have this year.

Marshall

Post by goaler »

I saw Marshall in the scrimmages and I'd have to say they are very good. I see they have 12 seniors which means that three lines have section semi-final and final experience. This may be Marshall's time. But West and Albert Lea both looked very good as well.

East and Marshall played a bruising scrimmage that ended with a nasty check from behind by an East player on a Marshall forward.

Waseca lost almost its entire team last year and is very thin, but they opened the season against Rogers Saturday and played an excellent game, losing a tight one-goal game 4-3. A bounce here or there and they could have won against a team that beat them handily last year. Give `em a little time and they'll be more competitive than they looked in the scrimmage.

1. Marshall plays Austin....not a first test Austin is going to be absolutly terrible this year.

2. AL was not a preseason favorite last season. Roy made that team the best team in the section at the end of the regular season. They didnt play to their full potential in the playoffs and thats why they got beat by Marshall. Nothing against Marshall though they played a great game against AL and fully.deserved to win that game.

The section is going to come down to West and AL as everyone else has said. AL in my opinion has the advantage due to experience and coaching. Clay has played in the section finals twice and won twice. We all saw what experience can do to a team in the section finals last year in the Marshall-East game.

Pretty good re-cap, goaler.
From what I saw -
West looked solid, no standouts, but 2-3 sets of good talented forwards and some strong D-pairs. Were missing a couple good players and their coach.
East looked better than expected, they will improve throughout the year. A couple of the older players will need to lead and be more patient. They will play hard and physical for their new coach.
Waseca struggled against a couple of the better squads on the day, but look like they will get better. Will need great goaltending, and they don't seem to have much D experience right now.
Marshall seemed to roll 4 lines all day without much drop-off. Depth may be their advantage as goaler said. Couple flashy forwards, couple solid D. Gave up one goal on the day, on a mis-direction of a shot from the corner.
New Ulm looks to have another tough team. Were missing some players (probably due to FB playoffs?). And their new coach will have some better influence on them. They'll play hard as always, solid in goal and physical everywhere else. Every 1A team will have to bring their "A" game to beat them.
Albert Lea has re-loaded nicely, pretty solid as usual. Couple really tough forwards, couple really strong D. Won't give up many shots again, as Roy and staff have them working hard all over the ice. The Marshall/A.L. match-up was just plain good hockey as it usually is with these two. It's always been an even game when these two meet at this age, all the way through youth levels. No reason to expect any different this year.

Overall -
Too much familiarity betweeen teams caused too much drama for it to be a real good scrimmage. Hard to get things done when there is head-hunting going on. The hard, clean scrimmages allow for some improvement, the scrappy ones are a waste of time.
Haven't seen Austin or Windom, they will have a say in things thru the year as well.
All 5 teams at the scrimmage will get better as the year goes on. Should be a very interesting season. Can't sleep on NU or East, they expect to win games, and they will. Both have new, young head coaches that will do well. West has high expectations, a good coaching staff, and talented players. Marshall still gets overlooked for some reason, they have put together a solid 4 or 5 years here and get no respect for it. Their coach has done great things with them, and they play hard for him. A.L. will play the best schedule and has some real quality players to go along with their legendary coach.
Enjoy it. Ignore the floaters that come thru and rip 1A hockey. That'll never change until we win one up at the Show. Probably won't change, even then. The ride is just starting.

Record?

Post by Puckhandler »

They don't keep score in scrimmages.

If they did, they'd be called a game.

Especially when they scrimmages are 35 minutes and each team plays a different lineup each scrimmage.

It's just a practice against other teams.

a2anda10, solid recap of those scrimmages. In the East Marshall scrimmage, it was cut short by some fighting, so that one was a waste of time. Waseca just looked like a Pee Wee team going against high school teams, but maybe they'll turn it around. But we'll see how it will turn out next week when actual games start.

East Marshall scrimmage

Post by goaler »

I was watching the East-Marshall scrimmage and an East player took a pretty good run at a Marshall player. There was clearly some bad blood there, and I think the refs cut it short. I know the Marshall players were steamed coming off the ice. Marshall clearly had the better of the play before they cut it off.

Waseca did look terrible against Marshall but they got it together and played New Ulm evenly in the final scrimmage. They have two decent lines and some very, very inexperienced players below that. They've got a long way to go, but their top lines played a gritty game Saturday against Rogers, a pretty good skating team, and they almost pulled off a victory.

I thought Albert Lea was the section favorite, but after the scrimmages I'm thinking Marshall is the team with the most experience, and they've got to be highly motivated. Their seniors have been knocking on the door for two years and I'm sure they want the state tournament in the worst way. But West looked awfully good too. So who knows.

Scrimmages

Post by grafmaster »

The scrimmages this weekend in Mankato were really rather lame. The ice was really snowy, games were getting cut short. Probably the biggest waste of time i've been involved in in a long time. 30 min. is a horrible test to see how the other team is. It was early in the day, everyone seemed tired, just wasn't good.
Puttin' on the foil! Every game! Want some? 8)
