Dogs bring out the Brooms

Post by Kamakaze »

the UMD Bulldogs swept Michigan Tech this past weekend, the scores were 2-1 friday night with UMD getting the game winner by Matt Niskanen in OT, and 5-3 Saturday night with Mayson Raymond getting the Game Winner.

It's about time the Dogs give the DECC faithful something to cheer about! It's probably a little premature to think that this weekend sweep could save the season, but it's something! Maybe this will be a wake up call for the Dogs and they will stop so dramatically underachieving! Next weekend Colorado College comes to town, we'll see if they can really keep it going then! The sweep might not save the season, but it may have saved the coach.

Umd has a good coaching staff. They just need to start putting more goals on the board. As you can see they did that this weekend and got the sweep.

At most D1 programs - hockey or otherwise - the question is not if you are good, but if you win. When you do not win, your job is in jeopardy.

Nah, with an extension of three years beyond the current season, as was talked about in the other tUMD thread, I can't see them buying out more than one year of his contract, no matter how dismally they play.

Now, if two or three years from now, they're still struggling and in the bottom half of the WCHA, they have two options:

1. Fire Scott.

2. Petition to move to the CHA :P

The CHA would take them.

Every league needs bottom-feeders.

About the only team they can compete with right now!

The Dogs have got Colorado College rolling into the DECC this weekend. Any chances of a repeat occurance of the Dogs busting out the brooms?

Little to no chance of a sweep, but the way the WCHA goes, anything is possible on any night. Look how tough Mankato always plays the Gophers.

Not unless CC brings a JV with them!

They may play the Gophers tough, but they haven't beaten Minnesota in the past 12 games.

As for UMD-CC, I'd take a split. CC always seems to have one bad night per weekend against sub-par teams.

Halfway there with a 4-3 win over CC tonight!

Props to Roscoe, btw, for his two goals against the Golden Rats tonight.

No Sweep, This Week...

Post by Zamboni Guy »

Dogs had the sweep dangling in front of them, but they couldn't seal the deal. After leading 2-0 into the 3rd period the Dogs started taking some costly penalties and the ensuing power plays allowed Colorado College to jump back into the game by eventually taking a 3-2 lead. The Tigers also added an empty net goal to make the final 4-2. It was a tough loss for the Dogs to handle, but I'm sure that you had told them they would pull off a split with CC, they wouldn't have been that dissappointed. It was good to see a full house at the DECC, hopefully the 3rd Period collapse won't discourage the Duluth faithful from coming out again in a couple of weeks.

Good call on the split Blue. Also, I never said that Mankato has beaten Minnesota (I'm a gophers fan myself), but they always seem to play them tough and give them a run for their money a lot of times, including a tie this year. Was just trying to point out that if the worst and the best square off in the WCHA, that doesn't mean an easy win for the #1 team.

I know what you meant, I just thought it was also worth noting that they have never been able to get over that hump, although they do play them tough as you stated. Mankato always brings out their best against the Gophs. If you watched those guys you would be confused as to why they're always stuck in the cellar.

As for the Dogs, it looks like they have turned the corner somewhat. They had CC on the ropes the second night and could have easily swept that series. If they can start finishing better, they will dangerous come WCHA playoff/Final 5 time.

I think the finishing part is what might have Sandlin in trouble. He should have all the people he recruited into the system by now and losing a two goal lead and giving up 4 in the 3rd period cannot be helping.

Although UMD got swept this weekend people should be more optimistic. Face facts they got buried on Friday, but made a nice rebound on Saturday. Their PP looked extremely good, but whether Sandelin can ride out the storm is to be seen later!

The dogs bring out the brooms again this weekend beating UAA 3-2 on friday and 5-0 tonight. With the sweep this weekend the Bulldogs will finish 2nd to last in the WCHA since UAA has no more games.
