A vs AA for the big one
Since the days of the old single class system, I'm sure this tought has crossed the minds of every hockey nut at least once.
Now that the hockey tourney has two systems, I've always thought to myself: What if the champions of both the class A tournament and AA tournament play each other for a final end all, be all State tournament champion?
I'm sure it would exciting as all hell!
Anyone else have any thoughts on it?

Personally, I like the idea and they used to do it in basketball so it's not entirely dumb.
But it does come up over and over again so I don't know if we want to rehash it, knowing full well somebody would have even if I didn't

Privates at one point, did in Minnesota. Or at least I believe the Catholic Church had it's own tournament up until something like 1974 when they consolidated. Modern day Duluth Marshall (then Duluth Cathedral) used to go to it all the time.hawkfan70 wrote:privates should have their own tournament

The problem with this thread is that it evolves as follows:Kurdatz wrote:Being new to the actual board itself, I hadn't realized that you guys had re-hashed this one out already. My fault. Thought it would pose an interesting question though.
1. Class A isn't good enough
2. If a Class A team wants to be considered the best, move up to Class AA and play with the best.
3. Somebody demands to know why some feel some schools should opt up.
4. Holy Angels recruits

5. Mitch or I close the thread.
Anyway, that's the history. Come to think of it, it's the history of a lot of topics except some like to play the Liberal or Religion card one more time in the process, reminding me that we actually need a rule about "no politics, no religion".

The path to the title game would be decidedly easier in Class A. Anything can happen in one game, (right AHA?) so if A wins we'll have found the true champion? I don't think so. The AA tournament is as much about surviving with a little gas for the next game..(Right Grand Rapids?)Kurdatz wrote:Gee thanks.hawkfan70 wrote:not to the new guysState Champ 97 wrote:I like it but it is a worn out topic.
maybe there would be some new perspective we hadn't seen before(As I wander around with a big L handshape on my forehead!)
Since all teams can opt up, the AA winner is "recognized" by most as the true champ.

The difference between AA and A is suppose to be school enrollment numbers, not talent or capabilities. But we all know that the majority of AA teams would beat the majority of A teams.
However if bottom feeder A teams like Bagley and Redwood Valley can beat bottom feeder AA teams like Becker and Northern Lakes why can't elite A teams beat elite AA teams in a one game situation?

Except for slappy, everyone was new here once. Welcome. Watch out for that east hockey guy though, he likes to torch threads. He even brags about it.Kurdatz wrote:Being new to the actual board itself, I hadn't realized that you guys had re-hashed this one out already. My fault. Thats kinda the point I was eluding to and you hit it just right on the head. My point is since the two different systems are based on enrollment, not talent or performance, why couldn't a perneial class A team on any given night, knock off a class AA team in a one on one. It didn't used to matter when everyone was playing each other ina "classless" system?

any given night......
that is why they play the games and not let mathrunners games on paper decide a winner

Its been mentioned before after the tournament, and i've always thought it would be a great idea. What would be wrong with the two champions agreeing to play each other the friday or saturday after the tournament. Granted AA would have everything to loose in a game like this, but if little ol Warroad tells Holy Angels they want a shot, its gonna look pretty bad to back down. The game doesnt need to be MSHSL sanctioned and could be considered a "scrimage" or "charity game", and I could gaurantee 16,000 strong would show up for that scrimage.
My point exactly. The only thing anybody would lose, is face or pride. It would be a good media and ticket draw as well as a good thing for high school hockey in general in my mind. And like you said, set it a week after the tourney in a non- MSHL sanctioned event and everytbody's happy....bringiton22 wrote:Its been mentioned before after the tournament, and i've always thought it would be a great idea. except if you're the team that loses...

It would be cool if it were at the X or Ucci. A big draw, the kids get a taste of the pro/college feel, etc.
Again, I didn't realize I was re-hasing a dead subject. And since I live here in Wisconsin now
there's few people who can understand what HS hockey is in MN. Hard to talk to any "local" people here at a pub about HS hockey.
They're all still wondering when Brett Favre is going to retire...Doesn't he play HS hockey somewhere?
