Local/Minnesota Bands
What are some of your favorite Minnesota bands from the past and present. I would have to say one my favorites from the 90's is the Gear Daddies and not just because they created hockey's national anthem (The Zamboni Song). After their break up lead singer Martin Zellar went out on his own and he's pretty decent as well.

If you want to go back to the '80s, the Replacements, Husker Du, and the Suburbs rule. I also liked Run Westy Run, but I don't think their records really do them justice. The Jayhawks and Soul Asylum started out in the '80s and are still going, more or less, today. The forementioned Gear Daddies also started out at this time.
In the '90s I didn't get out much, but it sounds like the Cows, Babes in Toyland, Lifter Puller were some of the better sounds coming out of town.
Now in the 21st century hip hop has come of age locally, with Atmosphere, Brother Ali and P.O.S. some of the better acts. There's still some great rock happening, I like the Hopefuls (f.k.a. the Olympic Hopefuls), Chooglin', the Plastic Constellations. For what it's worth there's a local band called Hockey Night, I've found them a little generic sounding but people on this board might like 'em. Chooglin' morphed out of a band called the Midnight Evils, I'd highly recommend both of the Evils' discs if you want to hear some good old fashioned butt kicking rock and roll.
Speaking of butt kicking rock and roll, a local band that started out in the '70s as the Hypstrz and now goes by the moniker the Mighty Mofos deserves more attention. It's a conundrum to me why these guys haven't gotten more acclaim. The only time I've heard them on the radio is on WCCO believe it or not, Eric Eskola plays their version of "Shake" at the start of his segment in the morning. They're led by the brothers Batson, Ernie on guitar and Bill on vocals, and I've seen them play in front of 10 people and a full bar and they always put out. They play around at the Turf Club, 7th St. Entry or the Hexagon usually, every few months and I'd highly recommend catching them if you have the chance.

Ahh yes the Flaming oh's. I think I went to one of their Duluth shows Freshman year at CSS (at the Flame maybe??), details are sketchyeast hockey wrote:An old band from around 1980 came across my mind who I'd forgot; the Flaming Oh's. I actually found an mp3 of their semi-hit "I Remember Romance". Good stuff.

Right, the Flamin' Ohs. I do think that they were originally called Flamingo, but they had to change their name because of a legal conundrum, there was another band with the same name. Great new wave, power pop stuff, you can see a cool video for "I Remember Romance" on YouTube at:RSI wrote:Ahh yes the Flaming oh's. Lee. Urban legend has it that the band's original name was the Flamingo's. At an show early in their careers they were introduced by someone who a). never heard of them or b). couldn't read as the Flaming O's.

They had another great song "Stop" which also has a video on YouTube:

The original keyboardist died about twenty years ago, but the original singer and guitar player, Robert Wilkinson, reformed them in 1997 and they continue to play live around the Cities. I saw them about a year ago and they still kicked it out. They just released another album last year that's supposed to be pretty good and have a website at:

Can't forget about.....
........Lamont Cranston.
