I assume you're referring to Reusse, who stated that he was fairly certain Mike Haywood would get the job. I guess we'll find out this weekend in all likeliness.

ESPN reports that Tim Brewster, Broncos tight end coach has been hired as the new coach for the Gopher football team. This comes out of left field, I have never heard of this guy.

Bear Bryant
Bo Schembechler
Lou Holtz
Tim Brewster

Maybe one day he will walk with the greats and turn this ship around or maybe he won't.

Though I shouldn't, I will give the suits in power the benefit of the doubt.

I am OK with this guy.

Its funny. People want someone who has been a successful coordinator and/or a head coach at a smaller program. Some wanted the guy who was at TCU.

Gutekunst was a coordinator. Salem the head guy at No Arizona; Wacker at TCU and Glen the Great at Kansas.

This guy has a good resume. He is highly regarded. If he can get players here, he is what we need. He can hire coordinators to be great football minds.

Go Coach Brewster. Our new Coach for Life.

...a former NFL tight ends coach. Makes sense, the U seems to produce NFL caliber tight ends.

At face value, this hire doesn't do too much for me. I had NEVER heard of this guy until I read the story in the paper.

Given Maturi's track record, he must be the right guy for the job. :P

He'll probably end up at Ohio State at some point and win a National Championship. #-o

Minnesota will always be the U to me.

Miami produces NBA caliber criminals, not tight ends.

His biggest asset in the past has been his recruiting, so in that sense, he is a good hire. He doesn't stir up the immediate interest that a name like Kiffin or Pelini might have, but I will give him time to lay his foundation for the program before I make my judgements. It seems like he has the enthusiasm to succeed as a coach.

I'm with you, I'll wait until next year's big 10 opener vs. Purdue, that is unless they loose to Florida Atlantic the week before or Miami (Ohio) the week before that.

I like this guy because I want to see if this program can be successful and if this guy cant bring in players, maybe nobody can.

The names he brought into NC has got to impress even the most hardened cynic.

I think he will do fine. But he has to be given time.

Give him 12 years and 2 extensons or so and then lets talk.

I would have rather had about 3-4 guys other than him, but I guess the hire might be right because I was supremely happy w/ Mason when we got him and that didn't turn out so well. It's all about recruiting for the Gophs right now, they need a big class in the next 3 years or they will forever be at the Illinois & Indiana level. I'm interested to see how we do and where Kiffin ends up in the next couple years.

My son went to the CDH basketball game the other night and came home to tell me Charlie Weis the Notre Dame football coach was there.

Did Mason ever do that?

The Iowa coach was at CDH the other day too.

I think Brewster needs to do stuff lke that and will. It should make a difference.

Hang out at CDH, EP, Lakeville, Wayzata , etc etc and get these kids to come to the U. Does the U ever offer spots to any of the local high school coaches? Set up some pipelines in MN. Get the top CDH, EP etc etc players and you are half way hime.

The ultra positive talking Brewster does sound a little like Geezo Beezo.

Hopefully it's the only similarity between the two.

He was in the broadcast booth for a short period during the Gopher hockey broadcast on Friday, and I was impressed with the enthusiasm he carried, even for a simple thing like an interview with Doug Woog. It seems he has a vested interest in the university which should translate to a better effort toward the program than Mason gave. I just hope it carries over to recruiting, I'm glad to see he has already tried to forge a relationship with the high school coaches and has talked to some top recruits about changing their minds and going to Minnesota.

I've got enough circumstancial evidence here to start a thread in a ND Football forum questioning Weis' commitment to ND. There is no doubt he is scouting schools in the MSP area for Jr. to attend.

Weis will be sworn in to pick up the pieces for Childress in Jan '08.

I believe the Vikes are part of his out clause with ND. He has always viewed the Vikes as a dream job.

If the Vikes move up in the draft to acquire Quinn it is a forgone conclusion that Childress is a lame duck coach.

So... Oakland is going to hire Lane Kiffin. I think he will suck in the NFL, drop down to a college team much like Bill Callahan did and turn them into a purebreed winner. I wanted him sooo badly. Brewster isn't bad, but I think we left 2-3 better candidates out there.

Oaklands choices regarding the head coach have been a little out there lately. I think old Al has lost it.

But good luck to Lane. He will need it.

Art Shell didn't really coach the Raiders this past year, it was actually a cardboard cutout of Shell, the headsets were real though.
