Spuds put on show

It took Moorhead a little more than a period to get its pyrotechnics lined up on Tuesday.
Once the Spuds’ fireworks display was organized, however, it was pretty impressive.
Trailing 1-0 after the first period, second-ranked Moorhead exploded for five goals in the second to blast No. 5 Roseau 6-1 at Moorhead Sports Center.
“It’s awesome when it’s going like that,” said Spuds defenseman Jeff Foss, who had two power-play goals on a pair of rockets from the point. “The whole team is going and going, the passing is going good, and shots are getting through, and the defense is shutting them down.”
Moorhead was lackadaisical in the first period, right from the opening faceoff. Aaron Ness scored for the Rams (16-2) on a breakaway just 32 sec
onds into the game.
“That’s a pretty tough spot to put your goaltender in -- having to stop a breakaway 30 seconds into the game,” Spuds coach Dave Morinville said. “We were playing like we were hoping to win, instead of playing to win. There’s a big difference.”
The difference showed in the second period.
Jordy Christian got things rolling for the Spuds (14-1-1) in the second -- all because of a Roseau mistake.
Behind the Roseau net, a Rams defender inexplicably passed the puck straight to Christian right in front of the goal. The Spuds senior wasted little time banging it home to tie the game.
“They gave an assist to (Nick Thielen), but our guy should’ve gotten an assist on that play,” Roseau coach Scott Oliver said.
“He passed it right to him, and that’s the kind of mistake you can’t make against Moorhead.”
That set off a scoring barrage for the Spuds. Foss and Devin Nitzkorski each scored shortly after Christian, mak
ing it 3-1 -- giving Moorhead three goals in 3 minutes, 9 seconds.
“We got some momentum going, and I think it got them on their heels,” Morinville said. “We get a break, then bam, a power-play goal. And then we bang in another
score. All of a sudden it’s 3-1.”
Foss and Pat Deitz added goals 1:32 apart late in the second, making it 5-1 entering the final stanza.
“We didn’t have any intensity at all in the first period, and you can’t do that,” Foss said. “In the second period, we
showed that jump.
“ᅡナThis sends Roseau a good message that we are a tough team to beat.”
Deitz added another goal in the third to end Roseau’s 11-game winning streak. Both Rams losses are to the Spuds. FIRST PERIOD: 1, R, Ness (K. Weston, Larsen), :32.
