thats what i am saying poor officiating in marshall all the time no matter what.... i mean come on 3 iffy goals not called come on now that is pretty bad especially since it favored one team the home team Marshall like it always does over there since squirtsOnlyafan wrote:bigbaby: please be very clear on the following. The refs were not in anyway hired or associated with Marshall. The truth is the high school league is who hires and brings the refs in for section play. To be honest they were about as bad as I've seen. Called off one goal in second period for Austin. It was a two on one break away with the puck sent across the crease. Puck and Austin player arrived in crease at same time. Tough not to condiser this a goal. Second potential goal was a shot that rang all three pipes. I personally didn't think this was a goal but could have been called either way. Third controversial call end of game with fans counting down. Soft shot into net with what appeared to be a goal. Marshall goalie seemed to be listening to fans count-down and quit about 1/2 second early. Fans were counting early.bigbabyblue wrote:doesnt surprise me they got 2 disallowed over in Marshall!minnhockey33 wrote:Austin: Disallowed goal Second period - In the crease

ya 3-2 FINAL!
I've never seen refs hit by more pucks or fall down more than these three refs. It was not a good display of officiating.

Didn't you know, all the ref's that go to Marshall/ref the Marshall games get together and plan how they are going to make the visiting team lose that game...gabT wrote:Even though the officials were not hired by the association it does seem that whenever you are the away team at Marshall that you always get the shaft if its youth of HS. Yea and you can't forget about how the ice is made specially so it is good for the Marshall players and bad for the away teams...
They just have all the hook-ups over there don't they?

Distribute that through, you get:
Poor officiating for the visiting team + poor sheet of ice for visiting team = The perfect equation for an excuse for a Marshall Win
Props to Austin tonight, came over to Marshall and played very well.
That team had many excuses to quit on the season, but they didn't.
Played hard tonight and got some tough calls against them.
Marshall's season could have easily ended tonight, had no normal intensity or fire, and basically got lucky to escape with a win.
Austin had disallowed goals, but also had three almost-full two minute 5-on-3s in their favor. Marshall had none. Was that part of the ref plan to have Marshall win, too? BTW, Marshall's big wins or ties in the last few years have all come on the road or at GAC. What were the big home wins they got help with? You wonder why Section 1A gets no respect, when all we do on this thread is talk about who gets screwed over every game. The day these teams start taking care of business on the ice and stop griping about every call is the day respect will come.
AL used to get respect for that very reason the past couple years.
NU used to be quiet and play hard.
Marshall and Mankato have both been at their best when they play and quit whining.
But it seems that this year, fans, players, and parents have lost that lesson.
No flow to the game at all, every time Marshall got mo going, another kill situation set them back. And btw, they got penalties because they didn't move their feet enough, grabbed on instead of skated harder to catch up. (Not blaming refs).
The night was about Austin playing hard, Marshall overlooking an opponent who has played a tough schedule, and some blown calls both ways.
The semis and final at GAC have the potential to be great if all 4 come to play hard. There is also the potential for big disappointment if all come over griping and whining. Leave the reffing to the refs, the coaching to the coaches, and the playing to the players, and all will work out just fine.

yeah no kidding... i mean i am sick of reading polls saying who's got a hard section and section 1 gets 0 votes. we have a few good teams in this section but are often lost because our reputation has gone to hell over what a2anda10 was talking about. now hopefully this year one of these teams will represent section 1a well. now with this topic on hand... who do you think is going to have enough grit, heart, and determanation to make it to the final and state. i wanna hear some good predictions here on who you think will be in that final and if you feel like or if you wanna wait until after saturday but predictions on who's going to state too...
I think saturday we're going to have:
Albert Lea - 4
Marshall - 1
Mankato West - 3
New Ulm - 0
I have no prediction so far on who's going to state. I want to first see who is going to go to the final. I'll be watching closely on saturday and if anybody even cares i'll give me best prediction then.

Where was Marshall tonight? Austin clearly scores on a 2 on 1 breakaway but ref waves it off, man in the crease. NO WAY. Austin rings one off the pipe aand it might be in but the ref waves it off (decent call). Score is 3-1 Marshall and Marshall goalie pulls a classic squirt (mite) move and deflects an icing puck into his own net. What a mental mistake!!!! 3-2 Marshall now. Game nearly over students count down the time and goalie listens to the fans instead of play the game and with time clearly still on the clock Marshall players and goalie quit. Austin scores!!!! But ref waves it off. I don't have any idea if it beat the clock or not but Marshall clearly quit before time ran out.
Bottom line: Worst officiated game I ever saw, poor low intensity by Marshall, nice job Austin esp. as the game wore on, refs stopped more passes by not getting out of the way than defensman AND Albert Lea will beat Marshall 10-0 in this type of a game Saturday.

AMEN very well said!! If people in this thread would give props when they are due and quit arguing all the time this thread would be awesome.
No doubt there are bad calls in every game, but think about it, if both teams take care of business on the ice, the best team that night will win.
If we want section 1a to get respect we need to earn it.

What if I'm not a grown-up? Do I have to act grown-up? And how does one act grown-up, if they have never been grown-up? And what if there are grown-ups who bicker and call names, do you want people who aren't grown-ups to act like them? In which case we'd be right back where we started.

umm... i think southern minnesota teams do not get respect is because they dont beat the good metro teams or northern teams ranked in the top 15 we rarely play them teams and that is why we do not get respect who do southern teams play to get respect???

When the 5 seed has 5 wins it tends to drag your credibility down.bigbabyblue wrote:umm... i think southern minnesota teams do not get respect is because they dont beat the good metro teams or northern teams ranked in the top 15 we rarely play them teams and that is why we do not get respect who do we play to get respect???

exactly that doesnt help when the #1 seed murders the number 5 seed and so on with the #2 seed also blows out #5 doesnt really say a hole lot on depth in the section for quality teamsPuckhandler wrote:When the 5 seed has 5 wins it tends to drag your credibility down.bigbabyblue wrote:umm... i think southern minnesota teams do not get respect is because they dont beat the good metro teams or northern teams ranked in the top 15 we rarely play them teams and that is why we do not get respect who do we play to get respect???

You people need to realize that Albert Lea has a great senior class. Albert Lea has the best goalie Clay Casanova. We all saw him come up big overtime against Rochester Mayo in Albert Lea. Also in that that game Nova beat the supposed best goalie in Kevin Donahue. Now he is the best in the section.

I didnt get to make it down to the game but to me it sounds like Austin is the better team of the two. Does Marshall think that they can just show up any day and play good hockey when they want, well they cant they lost to luverne and they play in the SW Conference the worst in the State. By the sounds of it, the packers wanted it more and should be the team playing at GAC on sat. Austin had a down year, but at least they gave it everything they had each time they hit the ice....
West/NU 6-2
AL/Marshall 5-0
AL/West 3-2
AL does whatever it takes to win games...

That game in Marshall sounds like it was a heck of a game. Marshall is very fortunate to come away with a win. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Marshall will come to play on Sat. and give AL a run for their money. Good luck to both teams!
I was at the Mankato West vs Windom game. I was very impressed by the Windom goalie, he played fantastic hockey! I believe he was a senior, he has absolutely nothing to hang his head for, I thought he was brilliant. He faced 51 shots and only gave up 6 goals, that's pretty impressive! Considering his team only had 15 shots on net.
On the other end Ricky Litchfield came to play last night. He had 4 goals (2 short-handed) and seem like he could score whenever he wanted! He came to play and hopefully we see that kind of intensity from all the players left in Section 1a. If we do I believe we will see 2 fantastic games on Sat!

Semifinals
I can't see any way that Marshall will beat Albert Lea Saturday. I don't think it will be as bad as two years ago in the Bruer-Ellingson-led blowout, but it's not going to be close. There is no way I see Marshall staying with the relentless Albert Lea forwards.
New Ulm-West is a lot harder to predict. New Ulm knows how to play playoff hockey, tight and tough. West's forwards are very quick and talented. I'll take West in a heartbreaker for the Eagles, maybe even overtime.
Honorable mentions
I'm glad to see that Austin went down fighting. They had a very tough season. It was Greg Hackensmith's final game as an Austin Packer. He was one Austin player who never quit this season, and played every shift to the best of his ability. He consistently gave 100 percent throughout his varsity career, and represented his school and team with class and distinction.
Also, Waseca's Andy Meyer played his final game as a Bluejay. He ended the season with 61 points, among the highest scoring players in Section 1. His contribution to the Waseca program is immeasurable. Meyer's skill, quiet intensity and determination are an excellent example. He will always be a great Bluejay.
Just wanted to give some Section 1 players a little credit.
