After Moorhead wins the State Championship this year, Roseau will be the new engineer on the cow plow. Slappy is currently in negotiations with Roseau administration trying to rebuild the bridge he burned last year to be the official spokesman for the Rams next year.

He will have to go through Elliot70 to cover the Lumberjacks in two years in 8A.

Smart move for Bemidji. Just like it was for Warroad.

Class A Champ can beat anyone at any given time. 2005 Warroad Warriors. Just ask Slappy ... because as we all know ... It's up for Grabs!
And the message being sent to the kids is what? Anybody ask? Anybody care?

It's crap.... and Elliott knows it.

I guess Class A is "good enough" for the powers that be in Bemidji. Nothing like lowering the bar to ensure success.

Go Roseau!

Don't move us because of this but St. Cloud just scored to make it 3-3.
Good Luck Roseau vs Moorhead.

Still 6 - 0.

Neut
Kids were asked. It is what they wanted. Maybe not what the 9th graders wanted, but they will get a choice down the line.
Coach wanted to be AA.
AD was just gathering opinions.
Kids wanted A.

It wasn't my choice, and I did not want to influence the choice.
My choice is to support or not to support.
No reason not to support.
I will still be at all the games I can make, at home and on the road.
I will still go see the other teams that are playing quality hockey.
I will still be at bantam games and some pee-wee games.

Not a lot changes for me.

And if they make it to state (even A) it will create hockey excitement in a non-hockey community. So maybe it will generate more young hockey players, that will create a broader base of athletic boys playing and maybe make the program succesful in future years (at AA).

You know Elliot. You say Bemidji is a non-hockey community. It is not a basketball or football, or baseball community. What type of community do we have here. I guess I always thought of it as a hockey community above the other sports but not in the true sense. I guess I don't know what to think on that.

6-0 final Rams win. SOG 49-16. It looks like it will be the much predicted Ram Spud final. It should be a good one.

State Champ
We have strong wrestling program in terms of numbers and success.
We do very well in baseball - especially in the younger levels and are growing in numbers.
At one time Bemidji was a basketball power.

We are a big town (for northern MN), but we do not have strong #'s involved in sprorts - for a lot of different reasons. One being that we have a mix of economics (as I am sure you know). And the mid to upper income people are a mix of culture (Medical and Educational people from various parts of the country).
We have strong cross-sountry, nordic ski teams. Our swim teams usually do very well.

In terms of hockey numbers
Bantams: EGF, Roseau, TRF are equal to us.
Pee-wees: Roseau and TRF are equal to us.
Warroad, Crookston, LOW not too much lower than our numbers.

If you have 35 kids playing squirt hockey, you do not have enough to be a power in AA. Okay what about Roseau, you ask. With 35 kids Roseau has half or better of the boys. They draw the better athletes.

What it comes to is recruiting. Each sport needs to recruit kids to their activity. In Bemidji wrestling and baseball are doing better than soccer and basketball. Football is improving. Hockey is sttruggling with numbers.

They are doing a good job with getting quality coaches and ice time for these kids (thus success for peewees and bantams). Hopefully (and I believe it will with the dedication of people in place right now) it will continue.

Thus I think they will be able to compete at AA. But again, I am just me.

So if you want to help Bemidji hockey convince mom and dad and little Johnny (and Little Janey) to play hockey.

I am involved in the football program here in Bemidji. It is improving. There are still a few changes I would like to see made. As far as wrestling I didn't realize that was a power but I do not follow wrestling at all. I knew we did well in baseball but I didn't consider us a baseball town. From what I have seen it seems whatever sport is doing well, that is the sport everybody follows, although I was surprised at the lack of recognition given to the girls hockey team for going to state.
I understand the numbers and econimic issues. I have nephews here in Bemidji that don't play hockey anymore and one would be in the squirts or pee wees. I guess they didn't like the long schedule that boys that age are playing. I disagree but I am not their parent. Maybe we are a curling town?

Just my opinion Elliott, but I think Bemidji hit the above. If they have success at class A, they wont move up (think Warroad). I think we both know that.

As I have some connections in that community, I hear that hockey program is losing more and more kids every year as people aren't liking the head coach and it just isn't worth the time because it's no fun. I know this guy just stepped in as the head coach but if kids and parents don't like him, (from what I've seen on here you don't mind him) one would think maybe he oughta be outta there soon. Not necessarliy because of the hostility some of the players and parents have, but he also hasn't won a whole lot as the head guy.

When Mischke came in a lot of people wanted the ISD to go outside for someone. They had for football and basketball and people wanted someone like Kennet from Red Lake Falls.

I don't know what the thinking was, but the old coach left unexpectedly and Mischke was hired rather quickly (all this in the month of July).

I know people do not like him. I do. I like him as a person. Adn I think with Kevin W and Peach and Chido with him it gives a good mix. Again I do not go to a lot of practices so I can't give the insight there. I do talk to people and know some don't like the way he plays kids, but I think that happens everywhere.

Is(was) he the best out there... no. Comes in with very littel coaching experience. But he is working at it.
He will have more pressure next year as there will be greater expectations with the same for the years after that.

We will see....

Man it's sorry to hear the the big B isn't considered a hockey town. We were there for a Pee Wee tourney last year and it was great.

I know what you mean by athletes. Here in Rochester we have the same problem. Only 35% of our households have kids, with 10-15% being recent planted in our country. We are lucky to land 4 athletes at every level.

People in D8 bitch because we have 4 High Schools yet only 1 A team at every level playing districts. Well the truth by told the #'s don't warrant two A teams.

Good luck, my kids wanted to move to Beaver Country after our visit last winter.

We will take you.

The more H people the more clout.
But Bemidji is a very diverse little town.
Skiers/showboarders, curlers, swimmers, snowmobile/dirt bike/stock racers, besides the traditional ones...

and excellent music/theatrical groups....

But I guess that is good. And we will have our hockey days.
Girls side is strong and should stay that way for some time.

And the pee wee tourney is something. A friend and I ran it for 15 years.

Just 3 years ago a group picked it up again and are doing a wonderful job.
