Right, but DM beat a tested AA team (Grand Rapids) on the same day STA beat hill. Maybe GR isn't the same caliber as a Hill or Cretin, but it definitely makes a statement. Also, STA got a chance to play (and lose) to Hill earlier in the season 4-1, while I can't remember when the last time GR an DM played (ever?)HShockeywatcher wrote:No. It was late in the season, which is what matters. If they'd played Cretin late in the season I'd switch them and Hermantown on my list.
Hermantown's last real challenge was a tie (0-0) to Cloquet. DM only lost to Cloquet by 1. Furthermore, when was Hermantown's last real challenge before that, DM? That's what I thought. That's why you SHOULD go back and make the change on your list.

If STA beats RW soundly, then they go #1. Redwing lost to Hermantown in OT very recently in a very evenly played game SHG et. Strength of schedule is at issue here. Hawk fans please list Hermantowns AA wins and top ranked A teams to compare......Goldy Gopher wrote:If they make it I think Hermantown has to get the 1
STA wins against AA
2-1 Hill Murray
5-2 Burnsville
3-3 Minnetonka
4 Losses to AA
OT loss 4-3 to Edina
Hill Murray
Cretin
Brainerd
Ranked A opponents
4-4 with DM
7-1 over Breck
5-1 & 3-0 over Mahtomedi
2-1 over Redwing
5-1 over Rochester Lourdes
3-0, 3-0 & 4-0 against Richfield.
STA has given up 3 goals over their last 10 games......

The reason I won't make the change in my list is that there's a loss to Cathedral that haunts Marshall's schedule (one that may even prevent them from getting to state). Sure, St Thomas lost to Hill earlier in the season, but this is a human ranking system, and the human I am was at the game to know it was 3-1 with an empty netter and the game was much closer than the score shows. I think St Thomas probably had 6 missed scoring chances. Marshall also lost to Minnetonka, although early in the season. I say that without the Cathedral loss, Marshall is at #2 and Hermantown at #3. But what's the difference between 2 and 3 really? The color jersey you wear in the semi's? C'mon now.
Personaly i think that seeding the top 4 seeds and random draw for the bottom 4 is a dumb idea. Seed them all or keep it like we used to, by section. Just for example, say Hermantown gets the # 1 seed and Little Falls get # 4 seed, and Hermantown draws for example Warroad and Little falls get Blake. Warroad is by far the better team than Blake. If they are not going to seed all 8 teams, it doesn't matter who get 1-4 because that has no meaning. It could all work out that the #1 seed plays the worst team and #2 plays the next worst team and so on, but it could also play out like i said before how the #1 team could play a much harder team than the # 4 team would have to first round.SEED THEM ALL OR DON'T SEED THEM!
Human system is the key here watcher.HShockeywatcher wrote:The reason I won't make the change in my list is that there's a loss to Cathedral that haunts Marshall's schedule (one that may even prevent them from getting to state). UNDEFEATED WINS IN HUMAN SYSTEM UNLESS IT'S THE BCS
see you at the rink!
Yea the seedings work weel if all of the top 4 win in the quarterfinals, and then the semis would be 1&4 and 2&3. But i just think it really is stupid that the #1 seed could play play a better team than the #4 team. Seeding don't matter until the semis, because in quarters seedings aren't going to indicate who you are going to play, random draw is.DmnHawk5 wrote:Yeah but if #1 wins in the quarters like they most likely should, they play #4 (if they also win) and easier game that #2 or #3.
I agree that they should seed 1-8 but its better than it was before, at least this way it can almost asure that 1 and 2 or something like that doesnt play first round (kind of like how last year in A DM vs. Blake and Little Falls vs Mankato East first round) you could argue that that had 2 better teams and 2 worse teams playing first round. Baby steps to the state tournament utopia. HAHA
Regardless of who gets the #1 seed, the "final four" of this tournament is going to be AWESOME! Possibly St. Thomas, Warroad, Duluth Marshall, and Hermantown!? Whoever it is, the games will be great! Can't wait! Hopefully STA, Warroad, and Marshall all make it!
Also, just an afterthought, but I don't think that seeding 1-8 would matter. In my opinion there are clearly four teams that, if they make it, will be better, and four that will not be as good. I don't see much of a difference between Blake, Little Falls, NP/Orono, or Albert Lea. But not one of these teams SHOULD (they could though) beat STA, Marshall, or Hermantown... Warroad would be a "maybe". In other words, if Hermantown is #1 and plays Blake, and Marshall is #4 and plays New Prague, it shouldn't/wouldn't make a difference. Blake could be a #8 or a #5 seed. That's my point... maybe not clear, but a point nonetheless.

For all you people who say Hermantown should be #1 because they are undefeated, ponder this. Sure, they have three losses, but let's say Little Falls went undefeated, changing any or all of their three losses to either wins or ties, would you then say they should be #1 too? Obviously not. Sure, if they would've crushed Brainerd 10-0, maybe. But otherwise, no way.
Why? Because of their strength of schedule and who they beat. Just like Hermantown. If it wasn't a SOS thing, why is St Thomas higher in PS2? Why higher.
In those 4 losses mentioned, two were 1 goal losses, one of which they were ahead of Edina. Hermantown is a great team, yes, but they haven't proven it against good teams.

I see what you're saying,... and that's a good point.shooter111 wrote:What if STA beats Red Wing with the same score/type of game as Hermantown did, beating them by one goal again? Coming off the same type of game you can hardly put one above the other. How could you compare them if this happens?
hopefully someone can understand what I'm trying to say.
The only thing I would say is this: RW's rivalry with STA is the only thing that keeps the game close... so if it's a one-goal differential, I would consider STA a bit above Hermantown.. but if not, then they are pretty even-steven. HOWEVER, I'm still going with Hermantown for this season.

I'm sure myself, along with many others, think that's a huge if AND are also surprised Hermantown didn't win by more. That being said, in my opinion it's a lose/lose for Hermantown from where I'd personally, along with many others, put them in the rankings. The only way to show up St Thomas, if St Thomas wins, is for St Thomas to win in OT. If they don't, and they win (by at least the margin Hermantown did, obviously) they have the upper hand. My opinion totally. But we all know that. We'll see what happens.
Oh man, here's one post about St Thomas to the countless I've made recently not about them

I just typed out a reply that analyzed Hermantowns schedule with Grand Rapids, Cloquet, Duluth Marshall, TRF, and Hibbing... and I must have gotten "timed out".. and lost the who thing when I hit submit!
GRRR>>>..
If it would have went through... for those who like to speculate so much... My point was that the top A teams can compete with the top 15 AA teams on any given day. The scores with like matchups, etc. proved it.
well, here's a simple start:
... Duluth Marshall and STA skated to a 4-4 tie.
Grand Rapids tied Hibbing twice... Hermantown beat Hibbing twice... there are some very good score comparisons here with like opponents.
I would like to know why there is so much disrespect for the Hermantown team and program? From what I was told this is the same group of kids that placed "3rd in state" in Bantams! They just went through and undefeated season (only one other team to date this yr can say the same thing- AHA).
anyway... my first attemped post was longer... I'm tired.. going to get out skiing early in some POW. Then catch the hockey games all day Sat.!
Enjoy your Sat!

1- STA- defending champs, and although these are different players that still counts for something
2- Hermantown- easily could/should be #1
3-Duluth Marshall- Top tier team with state experience
4- Warroad- Same as DM
5- Blake- arguably in the toughest A section, and have been made a better team through the section test
6- Little Falls- Weak section but enough fire power to do some damage
7- Orono- played well in the sectionals and handled a very solid NP team pretty easily
8- AL- Tough team that could have a shot to win a game if they get the right draw.....but its no secret that they havent been tested to this level all year being in section 1

How does Hermantown not make the #1 seed. They went undefeated in the regular season. H-town beat all the teams they needed to. They tied Cloquet and Marshall. Two high quality teams. Now, they beat #4 Hibbing and they still don't get respect. Come on. Rediculous. I think they've proved themselves. If they haven't, then what can they do to do so.
