It has absolutely NOTHING to do with just Denfeld transfers. In general, every year they land more players to keep their team afloat... Players coming in from schools in Duluth, Eveleth, Two Harbors, Silver Bay, Moose Lake, ect.DmnHawk5 wrote:fkahcky, i can really only think of one good player who left denfeld for marshall, thats far from 3 or 4 a year.
And if you want to get technical with me..
Casey Giessler came from Denfeld (Started most of his Junior and Senior Year in goal)
Brandon Johnson came from Denfeld (now plays D-1 hockey for the Air Force Academy)
Rob Bordson came from Denfeld (Going to be playing for UMD next year)
Joey Johnson came from Denfeld (helped lead DM to a state tournament birth in 2000..
I'm sure there's more I just don't know about.. but get your facts straight.
great minds think alike.. this is my post from the congrats marshall thread
the first 2 periods of this game was some of the best hockey ive ever seen.. unreal physical, fast play with tons of scoring chances.. Whoever said marshall would get dominated in the physicl game needs a kick in the nuts.. Big Bill and bobby gutsch dominated them.. No disrespect tho SCC was very VERY Big fast and physical, but marshall was ready
And on the 3rd or 4th goal what an unreal fake drop pass setup by Dodd for a goal .. I think #18 got it.. unreal game..
Scc's goalie was amazing as wellhe had breakaway stops on connolly and guzzo and many many point blank shots
Here are a few more facts for you:fkahckyprofessor20 wrote:It has absolutely NOTHING to do with just Denfeld transfers. In general, every year they land more players to keep their team afloat... Within the last 10 year, Cloquet has had at least 3 hockey players from Moose Lake. Duluth East has had 1. I think the common thread between these schools and DM is the quality of hockey program. There will always be movement between schools for quality of programs. That doesn't just mean hockey. That could also mean band, choir, academics, football, or whatever is most important to the student in question. I guess what it really boils down to. . .each student athlete must choose what is best for them. If that means leaving their school, then so be it.
Can we all lay off the whole private/public debate already? I think that it has been established that DM must attract ALL of it's students from the surrounding area, as it is a private school and thus does not have an established boundary. However, is it being a "traitor" to leave a school (public/private) to obtain a better education??? I think that everyone on this forum can agree that the education at DM is of higher quality than that at other area schools. (There are at least 2 former DM players at highly ranked colleges (Harvard, MIT.) I think this alone speaks for the quality of student athletes at DM! As for the "traitors" from Moose Lake, you may want to consider that there were two players from Moose Lake on Cloquet's Varsity hockey team last season. There was also a player 5 or 6 years ago on Cloquet's team from Moose Lake. In addition, there was a player from Moose Lake on Duluth East's team 3 or 4 years ago. With the exception of one Cloquet player, none of these athletes participated at the high school level at ML. And, if you consider hs to be 10-12 grade, most of these players moved before they were in hs. How can you be considered a "traitor" to your school if you leave before you were ever in hs or able to participate in sports?? So, if you really want to get into a debate about "recruiting" or "traitors," you may want to consider that DM is not the only culprit and also that the educational opportunities available at DM draw many student-athletes!
Sorry, some of this is redundant. Great win Toppers! Best of luck to you at the X in St. Paul.

Well, there were some pretty bold predictions from the SCC fans, but I think the better team did win. Congrats to SCC for a very good year. They should be proud of what they accomplished, but it is difficult to lose when a state tourney appearance is within your grasp.
How will SCC be next year? My friends down your way tell me they are losing a whole slew of seniors including their goalie and the backup doesn't look like a varsity goalie. Also heard Schmidt is all but packing his bags to head to the NTDP in Ann Arbor. Read it on several reliable blogs. The loss of all those kids seem huge. Any good Bantam A prospects coming up?

Read it on Dilks blog I'm sure? He doesn't 100% know what he's talking about. I emailed him and he said he was going to correct his false statements...so far nothing. I'm not saying he isn't going to the NTDP, but it's not as set in stone as you make it out to be.zippitydoda wrote:Well, there were some pretty bold predictions from the SCC fans, but I think the better team did win. Next year SCC won't have much luck as they loose a ton of their team. They have no goalie next year and will be extremely young for the most part. Don' t expect them to be in the Section Final next year.minyhocky wrote:Well whichever SCC fan on here said Marshall would have problems with SCC's physical play was pretty wrong, Marshall was more physical, but hey better luck next year SCC
First off Congrats DM on a good game and state tournament birthDmnHawk5 wrote:Hess kept them in it at all tonight, without him next year it will be tough for them.
Despite 4 goals on him (and an EN) that might be the best ive seen Hess play for all the quality chances they had. Marshall played very well and had a ton of open shots and great scoring chances and Hess clamped down and kept them in it for the most part.
I dont remember marshall being that fast when these two played in St. Cloud. They were very fast tonight.
Im not going to come on here and whine about calls or no calls like some may, Marshall won this matchup when it mattered most. Did i think SCC played their greatest? No, but Marshall was definitely the better team tonight.
Good luck to the 'Toppers, i would love to see them win state and represent 2A.
p.s. i didnt think the atmostphere of the game was bad at all. The arena was pretty packed, mostly with marshall fans but it was still a fun atmosphere i thought.

DM was the better team when they needed to be. SCC only played their game for about the equivalent of one period over three. Why the difference? I don't know. I don't think SCC could turn it on when they needed to and DM could.
Congratulations to DM and I hope they go all the way this year. I have a feeling that sections will change and this is the last time we'll see DM and SCC in the section playoffs together.
Next year? Who can really say. SCC has some young players that stepped up, and they have a goalie coming in that will probably take the #1 spot. He's playing Bantams now and he's no Hess, but in time he will be pretty good.
Go Get Them DM!!

the sxcuses for scc are geting old.. Before the game all you heard was scc is gonna take it, there ready there chompin at the bit , they will dominate in strength , size and physical play, yadda yadda yadda.. Marshall was smaller, faster, and just as if not more physical...
And Bob gutsch showed he can stand up to anyone on scc when he did his one man show in the second period, if you were at the game you know what im talking about... He took the puck in the zone got it stripped, knocked an scc guy took it again got checked off the puck , DROPPED another scc guy got the puck again and got a good shot off .. great play for bobby gutsch..
I was against SCC after the goalie HAD his glove in the right spot and gloved connolly on a breakaway, then threw the puck out like he was some kind of patrick roy or something, I had sull view .. Jack was goin up but didnt get all of it..
He almost looked like that punk crandall for a second

mj79, nice post! One of the more classless ones I've seen in a while, but nice job, buddy!mj79 wrote:the sxcuses for scc are geting old.. I want DM to win it all at state because I've met some of their players and past players and they are all cool. But where do you get off? EXCUSES FROM SCC?!?!?!? I've read one excuse...they didn't play their best game. Sounds familiar to the excuse from the DM faithful when SCC beat them at the first go.
Your squad is going to state, congrats! That's what you've gotten from every SCC-backing poster on this board. Grow up a little bit, please. Just for me.
On a side note, IF Bob Gutsch was as injured as claimed...that was the most gutsy performance I've seen from a high schooler ever. He was far and away the best player on the ice last night.

First off, congrats to DM on its win. They have a wonderful squad and will now have a very legitimate chance to take the state title.
Having said that, however, there's absolutely nothing worse than an arrogant winner, and that's what we seem to be getting from some of the DM backers. It's pathetic. It was just as pathetic listening to the DM fans chant the original lines in the last minute of the game, "Seasons over, seaons over" and "over-rated, over-rated". Totally classless, especially in a section final. Although I'd like to see DM win the state title as a representative of 2A, some of the arrogance in their winning makes me inclined to pull for another team, especially one with pure home grown talent and not with rent-a-players.
Overall, I was impressed with DM's performance and at least on this night they were indeed the better team and deserve the section title. I just hope their players have more class than their fans. There's a valuable lesson to be learned from that.
As for SCC, this was a tremendously tough loss, especially for its large senior class as they and the whole team were a very close group and really were committed to each other. This was not a team of individuals or any troublemakers. They had an amazingly close relationship and care for one another. You could see this especially in the last minute of the game when the starters came to the bench voluntarily and requested that the 4th line seniors take the ice. Now, that was a class move. The team worked their tails off all summer and through the fall in preparation for this season and their efforts paid off in their getting to the section final. This team some day will be able to look back and know that in many ways these days together were the best of times. Hopefully they'll know that what they accomplished together was something special and that they they'll be able to feel pride in how well they conducted themselves the entire season. I think in time they'll come to understand and appreciate how fortunate they were in having the opportunity to compete in a section final against one of the best high school teams in the state. It doesn't get much better than that.
Best wishes and congratulations to SCC on a terrific season and in representing your school in such a dignified manner all season. It was one heck of a great ride to follow.
