I believe this could be an interesting section this year, and more competitive. Mayo lost a lot of seniors, and it'll be interesting to see how they do in the next few years. Farmington is also a very good team but also lost a few of their key players. I'm excited to see how Lakeville does in this section, and wouldn't be surprised if they took it.

Agree, LVS is so young it will be interesting to see how they develop. Since the split they've gained valuable time together that they might not have had in a larger program with no room for any U14s to move up. I think Farmington is growing faster and even though they lost some, will be the new team to beat in their first year in AA. I won't rule out Owatonna or Mayo, but I consider them darkhorses.
I wouldn't count out Lakeville North either. I watched the game this year with South vs. North in sections. I thought North did extremely well...South's goalie is young tho and has a lot of experience...I think we'll see great things from her...However, North's offense impresses me a lot more...it all comes down to which is more important...North is extremely strong in front of the net on both ends of the ice, but South is also good at playing a competative defensive game...both these teams have proved to be able to compete...I'm also anxious to see how Farmington does in AA this year

While Mayo loses a big chunk of talent next year, I'd say the cupboard is far from bare. It'll be different for them to be something other than overwhelming favorites, but I think we can put them somewhere above darkhorse status.

Transfer from another thread:
I hadn't heard of the Int'l Falls goalie moving into Century. Unless she's all-state HM (which Liz Maidl is) or better, she won't be able to start many games. But who knows?
JM/Lourdes should be comfortable with your coach, Steve Russell is extremely knowledgable and dedicated. I think he coaches from a defenseman's perspective also. IMHO, thats a positive aspect. Mayo's coach, Jeff Phillips, is a first time coach, but has been an assistant on the Mayo bench the last couple years. Thats good experience with the girls going against some top teams, but with the change of coach and players, we're in wait and see mode.
The best news for Rochester girls hockey is the return of a U14 youth hockey team. That means the 8th and 9th grade girls impact on the HS teams will be minimul. In my mind, thats as it should be.
Of the Mayo girls who played as 8th graders last year, Kelli Anderson, Courtney Schubauer and Katy Trangsrud, all should see plenty of ice time this season (as should the Ruzinski girl.) Same goes for last year's 9th graders Emma Leof and Anna Billings. If there was a positive to be found in last year's lack of U14 opportunity, it was that they've had a full season of practice with a talented Mayo team. I know it sounds cliche and some don't give much merit to it, but those young Mayo girls definately gained from the experience. They'll be important in solidifying Mayo's depth, and the quality of depth is something that can't be overlooked.
Rocket, sorry I didn't get to this earlier, but we've had issues since the big rain. Nothing like Rushford or Stockton, but consuming enough to make me forget to respond.Rocket78 wrote:SEHockeyDad, How good are Mayo's young players? I'm asking about the 8th/9th graders. Looks like you got Ruzinski from us and Century gets a new goalie from Int'l Falls. Do you think she play in front of Maidl?
I heard a rumor of a Texas player but it turns out that she is 11 and her older brother is the high school player. I don't think we get anybody moving up from youth hockey. You might call this a 'continue to be building year'.We are comfortable with our second year coach, so, what's the word on your new coach? First time head coach?

Maidl
Although Maidl was HM it was more out of compasion of playing on a really crappy team and putting up some big save numbers. She's still the 3rd best goalie in Rochester behind Potvin & Murphy.
It should be a great year for girls high school hockey in Rottenchester.

SEHD,
Thanks for the reply. What can you tell me about the Rockets. Who will be carrying the load for them this year? I have seen the 9th graders skate when they were 12U. They seemed to be scrappy but not particularly great skaters. I think Bonapace will do very well between the pipes. I also hear rumors that Lourdes will be paired with Century in 08-09 so the goaltending will be awsome for them.
The I-Falls goalie skated with our younger girls this summer. Its hard to tell when you have 8-14 year olds shooting at a high school goalie
It's probably good news that the 14U team will be returning. How did they do it? Will it be competitive or is it just a placeholder for 8th graders. Who's coaching since Maidl moved to Century? I suppose the team will be pretty small since the 9th grade kids are already at high school.
I'd like your thoughts on Rochester's 12U program but I suppose that thread should be in the youth section - although it appears that they don't like to hear anything about any kind of girls hockey.

Lakeville
Lakeville North has a very good returning core of offence and goaltending. They only lost 2 forwards that had a lot of playing time from last year. Defense will be their challenge with only 2 returning. Lakeville South lost their young goaltender from last year to a transfer. They have a very good replacement but South lost half of their offence. Their strength this year will be on defense. Last year South won all 3 head to head games but only dominated the 3rd period of the last playoff game. North outplayed them in their first 2 wins and South could have easily lost both. This year I would predict North takes control with to much firepower. Both teams need to find a way to control Farmington. They are the team to beat in 1AA.Overall finish in 1AA
1-Farmington
2-Lakeville North
3-Mayo
4-Lakeville South
5-Dodge County
6 an so on - None will be a factor by seasons end.

where did you hear that lourdes is will be with century...this is really unfortunate...it's so hard to switch teams and it's not even right to do this to the lourdes girls again...jm is the smallest school of all the public schools in roch...it only makes sense that they're with jm...and lourdes is paired with jm in every other sport...i think someone needs to bring up this issue in rochester because it's just not right
a conversation was overheard at the rink between someone from the Edison building and a youth coach regarding the number of HS girls players and where the girls currently in youth hockey will be headed. The older girls are primarily headed to Mayo with some going to JM and Lourdes with hardly any headed to Century. The admin person said that the coaches were being asked about the situation.
When the Big 9 force the breakup of the AA/AA co-op it was very obvious that everyone was really targeting the Mayo/Lourdes (AA/A) co-op. The Century AD seemed ok with girls hockey dying at his school but was stuffed by a gutsy superintendent, a bucnh of determined girls and some youth coaches that helped them recruit. Lourdes is considered a guest and the Rochester Public schools dropped all outside co-ops including Dover-Eyota. Until Lourdes has the numbers to stand on their own they will continually be moved around to plug the leaks. I think Lyendekker had to play on 3 different co-op situations during her time at Lourdes. Yeah, it probably was not a positive experience for her or the other Lourdes girls.

i think this goes back again to the co-op subject and that "rochester" needs to change. although i believe it's not rochester's problem. yes i'll agree it's hard for us to find girls even in schools of over 2,000 students...but you have to look at the problem lying really within the big 9...the big 9 goes in spurts...right now it's currently rochester mayo who has the doniment team...but before that there was owatonna...who knows who it will be next...austin is up there too and albert lea...even tho there not in this section...but right now i think teams in the big 9 are acting out of "jealousy" of rochester mayo and are taking it out on rochester all together...look at many teams in the cities and many of them are AA/AA co-ops...because they're conference allows it...now i think it needs to be fair for every conference and consistant throughout the state...otherwise your not keeping fair competition...if you ask me the mshsl needs to get involved in this issue...not the big 9 itself
iPuck, I agree that MSHSL should get a handle on this issue. They are mostly concerned with the size of the schools and assume that the pool of available players is a nice ratio of players:students and as everyone knows, it isn't. It will be hard to compete with the big co-ops like the Novas and the Park/Maple Grove 5 school mega teams.
Rochester girls hockey is finally growing in these last 3-4 years and it is due to the youth coaches and not the high school coaches. One guy is doing spring clinics and summer mini-games. They skate about once per week. Several of them get together and do a free August introduction clinic and the kids loan out equipment. The problem that I see is that the last 3 guys that coached U12 & U14 were Mayo people and their daughters recruit their buddies so that a major chunk of the teams came out of the Mayo area. The 10U coach is from the Century area so you can guess that his daughter has gotten a bunch of her friends to play and Century will be good in 5-7 years. I don't know if we have a viable girls youth coach from the JM area so we will not have the continuous pool of talented players. I guess I better go beat the bushes...

i agree 100%
i believe jm had two great youth coaches but lost them to the varsity team. they did bring up lots of 8th graders last year, some freshman, and even a few of last year's juniors...i think right now for roch, and you kinda touched base on this, the high school coaches need to get involved with the youth program...
but along with the coaches, it means more to the youth girls if they see the high school PLAYERS come and visit practices and go to cames and coach camps...if the youth players see the high school players getting involved, they'll want to play high school, and they'll want to be just like those high school girls...

Its interesting - JM's head coach and asst were assistants to the Century coach when they were all in the youth program (I don't know who assists Madell at CHS). Mayo's coach came to town a few years ago and moved from volunteer to assistant to head coach due to retirements and resignations. The Mayo coaching staff ran the week-long summer hockey school so they are reaching down to help but I don't see our coaches (JM) or the CHS coaches involved. I would have guessed that it would be the other way around since there are plenty of Mayo kids coming through the pipeline.
Some of the high school girls skated in the same groups as my daughter during the spring and summer. In the fall hockey camp, there are 2 groups with the younger girls in one, and the 6th-12th graders in the other group. My daughter is surrounded by the HS girls and she loves it. She can outplay some and has to chase hard to try to stay close to some of the best players. I noticed that last years 12UA coach is on the ice with the Mayo girls offseason practices so I suppose he's moving on too. Going back to the fall camp, the numbers are huge so this bodes well for our high school teams for the next few years. I understand that almost all of the youth girls goalies are headed to JM. Wow, when it rains..it pours.
One last gripe..Why did Mayo have an invite to skate with their team last year and JM and CHS did not? I don't fault Mayo for doing this but gosh it seems like a no-brain simple way to recruit. This is something JM & CHS can do.

one thing about maidl and russell getting involved with the youth program: they both coached year in and year out at the youth levels drawing girls to the program...now moving up a step to high school...it's a lot more to deal with...a lot more things to worry about...i think once they get used to how the high school system works then it'll be easier to find connect with the youth program and draw more girls in...but like i said earlier...i don't think that responsibility lies entirely with the coach...i think the high school girls need to get out there and visit practices and such...it's the girls they look up to...not the coaches (and i don't mean that in a bad way)...
as far as the "skate with the spartans", i remember hearing about that and once you hear it, you can't say like "ooh lets do the same thing.." you need to think of something else...something different...
i know at the jm/c game this year (i believe it was parent night), the youth teams held some competition between periods...that's a great way to get the youth girls involved...it's there time to skate in front of the high schoolers and they want to make a good impression...
but i think what we can draw from this is that rochester is in the rebuilding process, and like all things, it'll take some time...and with the lourdes situation...i really feel for the girls and wish more than anything that they don't have to make this constant switch...here you have girls transferring from team to team so they can play with who they want and in our situation we have girls playing on three different high school teams in their four years without having any say in it...there's something wrong there and right now, it all starts with building our youth program

Just curious when Russell or Madell skated other than 'in season'? My daughter has been in hockey for a while and my younger son dated 2 hockey players and there was never any girls spring or summer hockey until about 3 years ago. I never saw either one on the ice. Russell used to coach boys when my older son was in youth hockey. I've never seen either one in the summer hockey schools or fall hockey schools. I'm not saying they didn't put in their time but it was never during the off season. For the last 3-4 years it has been 2 or 3 coaches pulling most of the weight. Anyway, for rebuilding Rochesters girls hockey I hope they keep at it. Anybody hear who will be the coaches this year? Will they still have 12UB and will the 14U program be revived?
the only camp i really know of is the mayo one...the other thing you need to realize...how many hockey camps do parents want to sign their kids up for?? if each high school has their own camp there'd only be like 5 girls on the ice for each team. would all three teams be willing to do a joint camp so they get the same "publicity"? where are you going to find the ice time and how are you going to pay for it?
i know mayo's doing a lot, and it shows...hopefully with the new arena more people will be drawn into the game and more ice will be availabe...i've tried getting ice and rochester and let me tell you, you look one day and ice won't be available yet..then when you check the next week, it's all gone! that's probably irrelevant...
i'm all for setting up girls hockey camps but look at it this way:
1. most of the girls are going to be mayo no matter what high school coaches it
2. because mayo has the camp going for them, it'd be tough for jm or c to start one b/c parents don't want to spend that much money for two similar camps
3. and i'll say it again...the only way for all the high schools to have a camp is if they did one joint one...

iPuck, I'm confused by the Mayo camp reference... Here are the Rochester camps that I knew of. The Summer camp wasn't Mayo's but was run by the RYF and the Mayo coaches were the guys willing to step in and run it. There were muliple groups for different age girls. The other RYF summer camp was run by Hyber (sp?) and there was Sq, PW and Bantam but nothing specific for girls. That is a non profit group and is open to anybody. The RYF also has a spring 4 on 4 league and runs the fall hockey school. Haskins runs an STP program that is sort a Lourdes recruiting center. Zmolik runs TopShelf and another one that I can't remember the name of. Bromburg ran a 4 on 4 league that was targeted to peewees but I know a few of the 12UA girls did it anyway. The youth coaches ran a spring session and then a summer small scrimmage games program. There was some sort of 4 on 4 program out to Kasson.
Am I missing any? I know I spent a few Hundred $$ this summer but its still cheap compared to one week at Peak, STMary's, Shattuck or StCloud.
One of my son's ex girlfriends was planning to skate in the Mayo girls sumer ice but it was cancelled due to poor interest. I guess they went to some tourneys in Kasson, Blaine and Wisconsin instead.
My comment on Madell and Russell was not intended as an insult to them but rather that I don't know of anything that targeted girls hockey in Rochester until the last few years and I don't think they are involved unless it is behind the scenes. In the programs run by the youth coaches this spring and summer there were a lot of Century girls in it, some JM girls and very few (if any) Mayo girls. As I mentioned, my daughter really liked going head to head with them but you and I know that she wasn't going against a typical high school player

iP,
I was at the Rec Center early this afternoon and the level 1/2 referee clinic was just letting out. There were a whole bunch of high school aged girls there from Roch, DC and a bunch that I did not recognize so I assume they were Aus/AL/Winona/Owa. Cool, I hope they have the HS girls reffing a lot of the U1x games since a lot of the dudes just don't get the girls game. Another type of role model for the younger girls!
