Just wondering why they would move three teams from the top five in the state to one section?

It's just a byproduct of the MSHSL redrawing the lines (boundaries) based on where the schools are located. Other than that, there is no logic to it whatsoever.

MSHSL said they tried to put the three "highly rated teams that couldn't do it" in one section because of all the complaints on this board.

No winkie face after your claim, but I still assume you are joking. If not, let's see a link!

punish |ˈpəni sh |

verb [ trans. ]

inflict a penalty or sanction on (someone) as retribution for an offense, esp. a transgression of a legal or moral code : I have done wrong and I'm being punished for it.
• inflict a penalty or sanction on someone for (such an offense) : fraudulent acts would be punished by up to two years in prison.
• treat (someone) in an unfairly harsh way : a rise in prescription charges would punish the poor.
• to group together those most despised in hockey

Section 2AA:
Eden Prairie
Holy Angels
Edina
Minnetonka
Shakopee
Chaska
Prior Lake
Bloomington Jefferson

So should we combine the "most hated" thread? I'm not buying it. Strictly from a geographic standpoint, these teams are logical choices. If your argument is that AHA should switch places with Kennedy in 3AA, one can make a case, but the other teams are basically across the river and far south.

This is not the only section that features three highly ranked teams. Section 4AA could easily have a better case and Section 6 and 7 probably aren't far off either. I disagree there was any dark intent at the MSHSL. In all, the top teams are spread pretty reasonably.

Should be very exciting games in a number of sections.

I think that to make it even more interesting they should allow two teams from each section go to state that way if you do have a section that is overly strong one year that would give more strong teams a chance to go on to state.

They've basically done it the same way going way back to just after World War II with the boys tournament. I do recall one modification along the way: for a while they had a "back door" mechanism which gave teams from two of the sections (they called them "regions" back then) a chance to make the tournament after finishing 2nd in their section. One of them was Section 7 so this effectively gave the north a way to get 3 teams into the tournament. I'm not sure how long this arrangement lasted but it didn't do what you're suggesting above anyway...

I just think there is something to be said for tradition so I would say leave things as they are now. I do think however the league should give some consideration to the strenghth of the teams in the various sections and try to maintain a reasonable balance, which as keepitreal notes is pretty much the case at the moment.

The argument that one section is loaded with quality teams as apposed to another is a boring, overstated conversation that has been beaten to death for decades. As has been stated many times by many people "The MHSL has never been interested in getting all the best teams into the state tournament. They are interested in getting the best teams from 8 geographically distinct regions, in 2 different enrollment classes, at the end of the season to the state tournament" If you disagree with this then get in line. It stretches back for many decades. May the hottest teams at the end of the season win it all. Nuff said.

Edina vs EP should be a whale of a game. The smart money is probably on EP since they have 12 seniors with State Tournament experience. When these two teams met EP won 2-1 but the game was very even with shots 25-24 and scoring opportunities equal. EP didn't have two of their senior players so that may be a factor. Also, Edina spent most of the 3rd period in the penalty box so if they can stay out of the box that may be a factor too. In any event expect a fast-paced physical game. I'm guessing that there will be a large crowd so get your seats early.
