Woodbury has been, and still is, a feeder system for Hill. I know Guentzel will attend Hill just as his brother did. Heck, Zepeda is a Woodbury kid who grew up playing through the Woodbury Hockey Association and is probably their top Soph. Knowing his father, my guess is it was the fathers idea to attend Hill solely for hockey.

Hopefully...sometime in the near future, these parents will let the kids decide where to attend school. I've known a few non-athletes who were offered the choice to continue their education at Woodbury or attend Hill. 98% stayed at Woodbury. On the other end of the spectrum, I know 1 or two athletes who left to Hill for the education.

You're not completely wrong here but there are other variables involved. If athletes are attending Hill to get an education first, and athletics second, people don't see a problem with that. But that's not what's going on with the hockey players that elect to attend Hill. They're attending to play hockey and hopefully get a look from a D1 college.

Other schools that you can throw in that same mold are St Paul Central for the girls BB program and Cretin for their football program. St Paul Central depleted the hell out of the city conference because of the open enrollment policy. Coincidently, the open enrollment policy was put into place for academic purposes.

David Eddy could have, and still can, attend Hill. He's elected to stay at Woodbury where he's made great friendships.

My theory is.....if you're a great enough athlete, then you will be spotted and offered a tender to play college athletics regardless of the size of the school. If you're average, then get yourself into a high profile program like Hill Murray Hockey. Heck, it only takes one good game with a D1 scout attending to get an offer.

HM - Woodbury

Post by stpaul »

This has been debated to death. Private schools have existed for 200 years. Families can & do decide to send their kids to private schools for whatever reason they want - academics, religion, sports, theatre, music, whatever. Yes sports too. Families living in the city of Woodbury are probably the largest number at HM these days. Woodbury families send their kids to HM for lots of reasons besides hockey.

I give a lot of credit to Woodbury for their season & win today. 22 wins and their first section title. Congrats to them.

I am not making excuses but Lechner went with his senior backup goalie today. He rewarded a senior who spent 4 years playing for him by letting him play in the state tournament. Nick Larson did not play because of a back injury. He's probably headed back to the USHL to finish the season and hopefully to the U of M next year. No sense risking a greater injury. HM apparently had plenty of chances to win and didn't get it done. Great season for them too. Its' a young team. Larson & Danna are the only senior losses. They'll be plenty good next year.

BTW great STA - DM game going on TV right now. 2-2, 3 min left in 3rd.

None, because the arrogance within the HM program still supports the inflated dillusion that each year they will be state champions!

Sincere Congratulations to the Woodbury Hockey Players!

However, it's not surprising that even in victory so many public school fans cannot stop their hate-filled whining!

Lechner was stated in the paper as saying we can't wait for next year. What a selfish piece of human flesh. You are in the tourney lose by one in OT and throw in the towel to the Royals. Boy thats where I would send my kid...... great coaching attitude. The AD may want to sit him down and chat about his future!!

At least the Hill kids can spell Delusion correctly.

Ha -- dillusion, that's a good one. Are you a product of public school?

Do you blame him or the kids? And I mean the kids from anyone of these teams that lose. Years past they got the Royal (no pun intended) treatment. Now, Lose you get shipped off to Mariucci and moved up in game time from night game to day game, no or limited TV coverage. the attendance drops drastically. If everyone else gives up and looks to the Championship games why can't the coaches and players? Get back to making this the elite tournament it was, make it 16 teams A and AA together with a lottery type draw for seatings. Lets see all of the games on TV, you have the equipment and people there.

Hill-Murray has won 33 conference championships. They have won the section 21 times out of 33 since joining the MSSHL in 1975. You can call it arrogance. I call it pride. HM is a great school for a lot of reasons. Hockey being only one of those reasons. I'll never understand all the hatred, envy & resentment of private schools - but go ahead enjoy yourselves.

Funny thing, you and your scoffing of the public system.... Realize that my spelling error does not change the fact that HM should be arriving home shortly...... I’m sure while eating dinner tonight the conversation will be something about where next years players will be coming from and how they can get their tuition covered!

Congratulations on your bow out, and hey no excuses about bad backs and senior goalie sympathy!

So the players should only care about the game if they're on T.V and in a nice shiny building? I've played games in a tin shed, in front of two people, and left everything on the ice.

So angry -- my my.

Go ahead and call the Hill Murray admissions director and see what their response is when you ask about an application for a tuition waiver/scholarship for an outstanding athelete. Do you honestly think all the other parents would allow another student a free ride when they're paying both their kid's tuition and taxes that support the public school system. Go ahead call them ...

Now, you will say it's all done under the table.

Ask them for a financial statement as well.

PS -- to St. Paul -- Amen

Here is what I dont understand: Why do you or does anyone else care why a family chooses to go to a school? What business is it of yours?

#1. It makes no sense to me. If a family makes the mistake of putting sports ahead of academics the child isnt going to do well academically no matter where he goes or stays.

#2. Academics are good no matter where you go.

So what flippin difference does it make as to why somebody decides on a school?

Also, whats wrong with going to a school that will give you a better shot at an athletic scholarship?

"Lechner was stated in the paper as saying we can't wait for next year. "

Actually, he was misquoted. What he really said was: " I cant Wait Until next Lent".
