About the seeding, Edina got beat by a good team, that played a better game. Clearly, going into the tournament they should have gotten the number one seed. Grand Rapids, I would say should have been 3rd or 4th. I think they should seed all eight teams. No one can complain, but I think the system should be changed.
About Cashetta, I think he played well. Pat White was going to score and almost all goalies would let that one in. Same with the third. The second was a pretty crappy goal for him to give up. He usually leaves rebounds in bad places and it always works out. None of the goals tonight were a result of that.

Grand Rapids vs. Edina
The first goal was a good shot that beat the goaltender. The second goal was a goalie mistake and he pushed it over the. The third goal was a snipe shot that just barely made it in. I think the main difference in the game was that one penalty Edina took when the Grand Rapids guy jumped making it look like he got hooked. Watching the replay it was obvious he wasn't hooked but I guess the ref called it how he saw it but must not of seen it too well. The game might have went to overtime if it wasn't for that call I am thinking. Edina had a lot of great scoring chances and were able to get around the Grand Rapids defenders that were blocking shots. The goalies made the difference in this game.

Seriously.....hornetz9 ....from the crap you posted prior to the game and now you gonna come out with smokin guns with this poor list of excuses as to why it shouldn't be an Indian victory. Gee....lets asses the 78' Edina double overtime over Grand Rapids the last time they met while we are at it....after checking the tape it looks like Jetland had a skate that was untied and I still to this day contest that double overtime goal even though I was 12 years old at the time....gimme a f-ing break hornetz9....I know it sucks for you hornetz9 to lose tonight....but keep your chin up...you lost to a great Indian team and with your fab5 coming back there is always next year.....just relax on the excuses and call it what it is...........Go Indians!!!!!edinahornetz9 wrote:The first goal was a good shot that beat the goaltender. Mouth, Math and HSwatcher are you listening...............breakout wrote:Well done!solway wrote:Dear Edina Hornetz9,
As someone who has been rooting for Edina since the 1960s, I admire your enthusiasm. However, if you had been watching Edina, and hockey in general, for nearly 40 years you'd be far more circumspect and allow Edina to actually win the games on the ice instead of arrogantly proclaiming sure victory before the puck drops. I suggest this both as a matter of having the class that people from Edina should both have and expect, but also as a pragmatist. Specifically, far better Edina teams than this excellent team have come up short in excruciating fashion. Dealing with such losses is hard enough, let alone facing the ridicule of those you've taunted before the game.
I haven't been so impressed with an Edina team since the 1986 team. I wonder if you have any idea who I'm talking about. I suspect not, because that team isn't listed as even a state participant anywhere despite having several division one players and ending the regular season as the undisputed no. 1 team. In many respects they were like this year's Holy Angels team, not only beating the top teams but rolling over them. But they entered the section semifinals against the fifth seed--Richfield--who played with nothing to lose and a hot goalie. I can tell you that Edina fans left the arena that night with the same disbelief as you saw yesterday from Holy Angels. If that power house can fall to a no. 5 section seed, this team can easily fall to Grand Rapids.
Edina West was no. 1 in 1981. They blew past Edina East 5-0 in the section final and were looking forward to a rematch in the final with Grand Rapids--the only team to beat them all year. Unfortunately, South St. Paul broke a 1-1 tie with 5 seconds left to stun the Edina faithful.
Edina was undefeated and no. 1 in 1970, but lost 1-0 in overtime to Minneapolis Southwest. They held the top spot in 1977 and 1989 as well--but lost both times to Rochester John Marshall.
In fact, no. 1 ranked Edina teams have come up short as often as they've won (the 1969, 1974, and 1982 teams came through). If you look at its history, six of Edina's nine titles have come in years when they were not the favorites. I assume you are old enough to remember the 1997 team with stars Dan Carlson and Ben Stafford. As good as that team was, no one gave them a chance to beat either Hill Murray or Duluth East. Their triumph was far more unexpected than a Grand Rapids win would be this year.
The fact is, the state tournament isn't about objectively analyzing teams and deciding who's going to win. The players decide that based on how much they play up to their potential on that given day, and also what their opponent does. They also have to play through unlucky bounces, potentially terrible calls, and even now and then a poor coaching decision.
When Edina played Grand Rapids earlier this year they had one of their worst games of the season and were lucky to win. And that was with Grand Rapids' best players recovering from injuries. I'd like to think that Edina will be much better prepared this time, but I suspect that Grand Rapids, playing a traditional rival, will be ready as well and will play the game of its season.
By the way, one other point you should take to heart as long as you're a fan of Edina hockey: Edina is 14-15 in first round games. Their glory is in the the semis where they're 12-2 and finals where they're 9-3. Ikola always said that winning the first is the hardest, and if they don't play their best game against Grand Rapids they'll be playing at Mariucci.
I love watching this team as much as you do and hope they play like they can and take home a state title. But there isn't a team in the tournament I'd overlook, nor would I lower myself or Edina with the type of overconfident boasting that characterizes most (but not all) of your posts.
I sincerely ask you to do yourself and Edina players and fans a favor: Respectfully cheer on your team, and if they happen to win, be gracious. Follow Ikola's example and recognize that every team is dangerous, especially when you fail to give them respect. With stars of the caliber of Patrick White and others on Grand Rapids, it's not only obnoxious to be overconfident, but foolish.

Great Game
You boys from both camps need to tone it down. Last nights game was a great battle between two excellant hockey clubs. Running Bare came up big and the Rapids boys out worked the Edina boys to get the win...the boys from the north played great but the Edina lads got their chances and Running Bare stoned some great chances. Electric third period you need to thank both progrm for putting on a great performance. It was a helluva game!!

You are extremely well coached TEAM that was prepared to beat the so called Goliath of hockey. GR showed up to play and Edina just expected to win.
The first goal was a great shot. However, I believe GR went into this game knowing the Edina goalie was going to play on his knees the whole game.
The second goal GR tried to top shelf again and since the goalie was playing on his knees he could not control the puck and he scored on himself.
The third goal, what can I say top shelf...goalie on his knees.
As far as the penalty??? Stop making excuses about why you lost. GR out played Edina and they humiliated the goal tender and the announcers for bragging about how great he was.
I did not hear the bias announcers talking about how great of a goalie GR had and he played just as superior as the rest of his TEAM!!!
I look forward to reading more excuses on why Edina cannot take responsibility for losing a game they lost before they even put their skates on.
GO GRAND RAPIDS!!!

Well said, northwoods. I am disappointed my team didn't come out on top. But I will be rooting for GR the rest of the way.
I think the thing that saddens me the most is that (other than the folks who attend the consolation round) people only got to see Edina's sophomores for one game.
Good luck to GR!

This was simply a great game. WWWWWWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOO RAPIDS STATE CHAMPIONS. Get this guys bought some tickets before this game and me and a few buddies got placed in the Edina student section somehow. It was great considering we were cheering for Rapids. I wish a few others could have joined me up there in the upper deck. The Edina fans were talking smack to us the whole time and they thought they couldn't lose. It was AWESOME.

Re: Grand Rapids vs. Edina
If you noticed, the make up call came about 30 seconds into the powerplay.edinahornetz9 wrote:I think the main difference in the game was that one penalty Edina took when the Grand Rapids guy jumped making it look like he got hooked. Edina got beat, simple as that. The refs were fine and called the game very evenly. Cashetta played well, Edina played pretty well, besides for coming out flat. Anyone who says Edina expected to win, is wrong about the team. They were very focused and played very hard. It seems like their youth finally caught up to them. The fans are a different story.
We may not have played our best, but Grand Rapids did not play their best, either. There team defense was very strong and Jensen was very good. Their offense had many other great chances that they didn't come up with. Hopefully the IRC resurgence continues and Edina gets Rapids next.
