What is it? I assume it's some Metro league, since nobody South of Lakeville and nobody North of Circle Pines.

It's a private tryout-based spring league prior to NDP. It takes place at metro arenas, but isn't limited to metro players.

Do these girls play a Spring HS sport or do they focus on hockey in the Spring?

We had looked at this but distance and daughter plays softball made it impossible for her but curious if girls can make both happen if distance is not a factor.

Looking at the rosters it appears that the girls are pretty much spread out amongst the different teams, even though you might not be from that geographic area. Anyone know how many made it vs. how many tried out? Obviously a whole bunch of girls choose to participate in CODP and other training/team options that are available.

About 163 players tried out. Does anyone know the score of yesterday second game?

The East won on the first shootout. I can't remember if it was 5 to 4 or 4 to 3.

i know many girls that played last year also played a spring sport. It was a tough balance and many of the games they came directly from softball games. Obviously this is both mentally and physically draining.

The game times last year, i believe, were around the same time as well.

the purpose of this spring league is to get players on the ice and ready for the NDP tryouts March 23-25 (Phase 1) and April 13-15 (Phase 2). I think it benefits all of the players to play with others that they are not used to as well. I know my daughter has made friends all over the metro thru this league....

That makes sense. I hadn't looked that closely. I don't wholly agree with it being done geographically but i suppose it's easier than the previously "drafted" teams.

I don't think the teams are geographically picked at all. I believe the terms North, South, East, and West are just labels to differentiate the teams. The Prep league uses Blue, Black, Green and Red. The teams are picked to provide "equal teams" for good competition. So far this has been successful since the first two prep-elite and first 2 prep games all ended in ties.

My daughter has participated for a couple of years. I think Winny and Ronda just try to even up the teams. I don't think the score matters to anyone but a few parents. Unlike AAA during the summer, the teams are picked to be as even as possible to produce the best competition so the girls can be challenged. Frequently girls will switch teams when there are no shows so I don't think anyone cares who wins and who loses, which I think is a good thing.

I agree-the teams are not planned to be geographically picked. Alot of it depends upon where you live and what rink you want to skate at. Just as long as all of the teams are equal for the best competition. They really are about making every skater the best.

The summer OS training program is very challenging and highly recommended. My daughter really enjoys both Winny and Ronda and their "coaching" styles.

i'm not trying to knock the participants or anyhting, but compared with the past i have observed that it's been much more defensive almost. The games are much lower scoring than in the past. I do like how the teams are very even this year.

What? You just stated that you thought the teams are relatively weak this year and then you said that it's been much more defensive. How can it be weak and much more defensive?? Do you mean that the forwards are weak and the scoring opportunities are low this year? Whatever! What I have witnessed is that all of the teams look as competitive as any other year-if not more. And let's not forget these teams are set up for the sole purpose of getting the players ready for the NDP tryouts so in reality it really is just a lot of practice sessions.

I don't mean that the teams aren't playing good hockey. I used the word relative for a reason. Compared with last years teams, i feel like their isn't as much scoring, there isn't as much speed, and it's a lot more neutral zone hockey.

It is by no means a knock on this years talent though. All involved are great hockey players and i even commented on how i like the even-ness of the teams this year.

I guess what it boils down to is we are no longer graced with Thunstrom, Jones, and many other speedy, offense oriented players.

The games are still well played and interesting to watch. An improvement from last year is definitely how tight the games are. Last year teams would get blown out and they got boring after awhile.

How does everyone feel about the new clock set-up with two 20 minute run time and one 25 minute stop period. In the games on Monday they weren't really even stopping it in the 3rd.
