Pete Rose: "I bet on my team every night"
Good lord, what in idiot. This has to be one of the dumbest human beings ever born. All along, I gave him the benefit of the doubt that he didn't bet on the Reds (although I still found it hard to believe) but when he finally "came clean" about betting after 16 friggin' years, why wouldn't he just tell the whole truth and cop to betting on the Reds?!?! Honest to God... what is the matter with this guy?!
As unlikely as it was for him to get in the HOF at any point, he definitely won't be alive to see it now.

Whats the matter with him is that he has a terrible gambling addiction, among other problems.
I read the article, thanks Govs, and he does come clean but ole Petey is still trying to rationalize it with the "I wanted my team to win so much, I bet on them every night" garbage.
You cant bet on baseball when you are in baseball. You cant bet on your team. The reasons for this are so obvious but he still tries to justify it and soften it . He can go on doing card shows for all I care. The game doesnt need him.
If he would come out and say" I had this terrible addiction that took over my life and screwed up my thinking, I have undegone treatment and I am over it, I will stay with the treatment and I am beggin for another chance" , maybe Id listen.
But instead he insists he is the best ambassador baseball has.
Pete.

Pete.
I agree with that to a point. If he had come out and said that when he finally copped to gambling a couple of years ago, I would be of the opinion that MLB should look a little closer at letting him back in to some degree. It's too late now. If he said it now, I'd probablky get a kick out of MLB tossing him aside.packerboy wrote:If he would come out and say" I had this terrible addiction that took over my life and screwed up my thinking, I have undegone treatment and I am over it, I will stay with the treatment and I am beggin for another chance" , maybe Id listen.
But all he's done is work his way from absolute, bald-faced lying up to half truths. Way to go Pete! You can't believe a word the guy says anymore. It's ridiculous. If he came back in a couple of years and said "oh, I bet against my team when Bill Gullickson pitched" (which has been a rumor for a while), would anybody be surprised? I doubt it.
The sad part about it is that he seems like a pretty nice guy.
Ive met him and Ill spare the details but he was very accomodating to a group of kids when he didnt have to be and I was impressed with his attitude towards people and especially kids.
But he obviously has these personality disorders that really over shadow his greatness as a ballplayer and his ability to relate to people.

Who knows as Govs points out.
Its gone from I dont gamble to I gamble but not on baseball to I gamble on baseball but not my team to I gamble on my team but only to win to....whatever is next.
Besides gambling on your team to win is a bad deal. A manager cant have a bet on the game. It would affect the way he manages and therefore the game. What if he involves somebody on the other team? Its really bad news.
Betting on your own team to win can cause as many problems as betting on them to lose. Pete seems oblivious to that.

Was Pete Rose a great player? Yes
Does Pete have many qualities that you want your own kid to have? Yes
Does Pete have an addiction that most can't comprehend? Yes
Is Pete Rose a "good guy"? Yes
Did Pete Rose lie? Yes
Does Pete Rose think that gambling on his own team was wrong? No then, and the answer is still no.
Will Pete Rose get into the Hall? Not in my lifetime
Would Pete Rose be in the Hall right now or in the very near future if he admitted his sins right away? Absolutely, positively YES
Under the current system for entering the Hall, Pete Rose will not make it. Today's writers will not give him 75% and its apparent the Veterans will not admit anyone under any circumstances. Pete's only hope, and this comes years after he dies, is that the writers, who weren't alive during this era, strictly look at his numbers and accomplishments on the field.

I dont think Pete has any more chance than does Shoeless Joe.
Joe was a great, great ball player but also a naive country bumpkin who probably thought it was funny to take the bookies money and then bat .375 in the series with a perfect fielding %.
Its been about 90 years since he was banned.
I dont think either of them have a chance, ever.
