His presence will allow Mauer to DH when Redmond catches and vice versa
I think its a waiste of a roster spot. I think Gardy is a little over cautious about losing the DH if Redmond got hurt.
I think anybody could go behind the plate and do as well as Lecroy, including Herb Carneal.
But if it calms Gardy's nerves, I guess its OK.

The only problem that I had with the sun was that it was so dang hot.
But seriously, you do need sunglasses down there, I can't imagine trying to find a ball looking the direction that the outfielders do (the sun is over the top of the pressbox, so it is angled right at center field). That was a heckuva throw though, no doubt.
The major complaint that was talked about when we were there was the lights for night games. Torii says he won't play in anymore because just before he got hit in the head by Loshe, he was telling the catcher how he can't pick up the ball out of the pitchers hand at night because the lights are no good.

Perkins looked just like he did when I was down there. NOT GOOD!
I don't think he is ready at all and I don't know where all you "geniuses" are thinking that he is gonna contribute in the starting rotation for the Twins this year. It will be Garza or SlowlikeRadke.

Take away Perkins struggles today, and he has a good spring. 9 innings, 2 ER with a pretty good WHIP. He's not gonna look great since he doesn't throw hard and doesn't have great stuff but he can locate well. I do think he would be best served with some more innings at AAA.EREmpireStrikesBack wrote:Perkins looked just like he did when I was down there. NOT GOOD!

I don't think anybody said he would be a good fit in the rotation, just that he would be better than Sidney Ponson.
OK, "Sid", maybe Perkins isn't ready for the rotation but I've said before that I'd like to see him in the pen so the Twins have another lefty besides Reyes. Bear in mind that he hasn't pitched above AA except for the cup of coffee he had at the end of the season last year. Even though his won-loss record was lousy, his minor league strikeout numbers (more than a K per inning) indicate that he was pretty successful.
I found this article: http://sportsline.com/mlb/teams/report/MIN/10070843 about Perkins, apparently he's working on a two seam fastball to decrease the number of flyball outs he's had. Based on that, my guess is that he'll be sent down to Triple A to work out any kinks.
It sounds like the conditions are a bit tough down in Florida, the high sun during the day hurts the fielders and the lighting at night causes problems for the hitters. I wonder how much of an effect that has on the stats that we see from spring training.

Perkins is doing OK and he did OK last year.
Keep in mind, nobody has 5 "stopper" starting pitchers.
Some of these guys we dont think much of, a lot of teams would love to have as a 4 or 5 rather than what they have now. That and the bullpen is what allowed this team to win 90+ games and a division.
It sure as heck wasnt the Boofin hitters.

Are the players now complaining about the height of the sun in the sky?
A quick geography lesson here. At noon, on Jun 21st, the sun is at its highest angle in the northern hemisphere. At noon on that day the sun reaches 71 degrees on the horizon at the 42nd parallel. Something tells me that the sun is higher on the horizon in every major league park in June and July than in Florida during March.
Now if the park in Ft. Myers was built wrong and there are some positions facing the sun, that is understandable, but the sun being too high in the sky, not buying that Torii.

He pitched last night.
And PB, the sun is a bit of an issue. During the day games it is just to the left of the Hammond Stadium "labeling" (where it says Hammond Stadium on the pressbox). This is just to the left of the plate (when pitching) and makes it hard for any high flies to left-center and left field.

Anybody who watched the game on Sunday saw what an issue the sun can be at the Twins' park. And according to Empire Torii was complaining about the lighting at night making it tough for the hitters.
Anyone else checking out Lavelle E. Neal's blog at the Strib? Good reading at http://www.startribune.com/blogs/neal/ . He just wrote an article about Silva.

I've been reading it. Neal really does a great job of covering the Twins and I have always enjoyed reading his columns/blog.ChrisK wrote:Anyone else checking out Lavelle E. Neal's blog at the Strib? Good reading at http://www.startribune.com/blogs/neal/ . He just wrote an article about Silva.

Jayson Stark speaks about the Twins potential free agents, specifically Santana.

The baseball season can now start as I have recieved my Sports Illustrated MLB preview.
SI has the Twins finishing 4th in the Central. SI is not real excited about the starters that follow Santana and they forsee some offensive regression. Though they don't name names, I believe they are predicting that Mauer, Punto, Bartlett, and Cuddyer will not duplicate their '06 numbers at the dish.
The biggest inaccuracy of SI's preview is it lists Aaron Gleeman, Batgirl, Seth Speaks, and Twins Geak as the Twins' best blogs and fan sites. I guess they haven't found us yet.

It's a shame because we seem to talk about more than how good looking Joe Mauer is ....The biggest inaccuracy of SI's preview is it lists Aaron Gleeman, Batgirl, Seth Speaks, and Twins Geak as the Twins' best blogs and fan sites. I guess they haven't found us yet.
... errr wait, I still do that
*sigh*

Joe Mauer diagnosed with a "stress reaction"...
By La Velle E. Neal III, Star Tribune
Last update: March 22, 2007 – 12:02 PM
Twins catcher Joe Mauer has been diagnosed with a stress reaction in his left fibula. He will be treated with a bone stimulator and physical therapy and will be re-evaluated on Sunday. Mauer came to the ballpark today complaining of soreness in the leg. An MRI was taken, which revealed the stress reaction.
A stress reaction is considered a precursor to a stress fracture. The Twins say they are optimistic that the condition was diagnosed early enough to keep it from becoming a serious long-term problem.

I hope they're right about this. You have to hate seeing leg injuries with catchers.

Reports are flooding the news that Mauer has a leg injury:
http://www.startribune.com/509/story/1072702.html
Apparently it's a 'stress reaction' on his left fibula which is a precursor to a stress fracture but the Twins are saying they think it was diagnosed early enough to prevent it from becoming a longterm problem. Hopefully this isn't a black cloud intruding on what has been a rather sunny spring training so far.
And something that could've come out of News of the Weird, Tony LaRussa got nailed for a DUI last night when police discovered him asleep at the wheel of his car. The guy was the World Series winning manager last year and couldn't afford a cab??
