I wouldn't say Yaggy is a sure thing, he looked really shaky when he finished the game vs Century last year. I bet Yaggy and Steinmetz split most of the games, with Steinmetz getting a few more although that isn't like Grosso to rotate his goaltenders. Also Yaggy had a very average JV season last year . But I take Lakeville South because they have a pretty good group of Bantam A kids coming in, and Yumaslakar pressumably coming back.

I agree with Rippentrop....Mayo probably has a good goalie competition coming up this next year, but both guys have big shoes to fill...
the difference for Mayo will be Thauwald, Tom Alexander, Mitch Anderson, Rick Weber, and whoever else makes some strides....they don't have much coming from Bantams, but the young guys like Whitney, Flott, Powers, Fisher, Buske....those guys could be the difference.
Right now it looks wide open between Lakeville South, Mayo, and Century...I would say the dark horses are Lakeville North and Owatonna.

id say it is definitely too early to predict. this section is wide open pretty much every year. i wouldnt count any team out, or select any favorites. my only problem with south is that even if you have a good goalie, its hard to win if you cant score.. and they have a lot of trouble scoring goals.. just my take. i think owatonna has a lot of good young talent so watch out for them.

Owatonna 07-08
runningwithchukchi,
This is not meant as a slam on your son or the other Owatonna sophmores, but I think your overestimating their abilities a bit. I've followed Southern Minnesota hockey for the past five years and those sophmores were way over their head last year. That doesn't mean that can't improve and be decent players as juniors and seniors. Those kids should be very proud of the fact they made it to Bantam A State in 05 and 06, but lets not get carried away. Those teams would have zero chance to make State in the new present alignment. Its one thing to beat Buffalo and Crow River. Its ten times more difficult to beat the White Bear Lake, Rochester, Eagan, and Lakeville's of the world. As far as next year, I see one or two Bantams (Snorek, Pirkl) seeing some Varsity time. I do think Owatonna will improve on its 8-18 record, but .500 is more realistic than talking about making the State Tournament? This is just my opinion, so please don't take it personally.

Frozen Water
I didn't take it personal, your entitled to your opinion and I as well. I don't know what my son or sons in my case have to do with any of this. All I said was that they have some good kids in sophomores and juniors who saw some playing time this year and will have some experience come next year. Eagan and White Bear are not in 1AA and Lakeville had two very sub par Bantam teams 2 years ago. Rochester will be down next year. How the Owatonna Bantams will contribute to varsity will depend on how hard they work in the off season. Chris Goodew will be hard to replace but overall we will have a much better team defensively.

Owatonna 07-08
When I mentioned White Bear Lake, Eagan, Rochester, and Lakeville I was just pointing out the 05-06 Owatonna Bantam teams didn't have to beat the same caliber of teams that the present D-4 Bantam teams have to beat now. I realize Eagan and White Bear Lake are not in 1AA. I agree with you that Owatonna has some talent coming thur in the next couple of years. I still think .500 should be their goal next year and in 09 see if they can put it all together and make a run at the top teams from Rochester and Lakeville. Either way, I'll be rooting for all the 1AA/1A teams at the State Tournament.
Rochester Mayo goalies
In response to "futureeagle" I believe it will be Steinmetz getting most of the playing time with Yaggy getting some games. The main reason for that is because Steinmetz did get a full varsity start against Winona this year and had a solid JV year. But it will be a very good competition for the spot. It will be very interesting.

I see a Mayo rotation..not the norm for Grosso, but he has usually had a clear #1 goalie - from DeBus to Truex to Ranfranz to Jakititis to Nash to Donohue.
The last time they rotated was when they had Klye Williams and Tanner Moffit after Ranfranz graduated.
I think a good goalie competition is like a good QB competition - causes guys to work harder and push each other, which ususally leads to one of them rising to the top.

As for Century, their JV team went 20-4? and went 500 in non confrence games. How hard will it be for them to reload after this seasons loss of seinors and knutson going to USHL or NAHL? Who were the standouts on JV that will impact the Varisty, and who from the Bantam "A" team will see some playing time?
