Should all 8 teams be seeded?

Yes, if you're going to seed, that makes sense

Seeding

Post by HShockeywatcher »

In Class A there usually aren't more than 5 quality teams that have a realistic shot at the title, so seeding the top 4 teams is fine. In Class AA, as was seen this year, there are usually more teams that have a shot. Yes, upsets are possible, but the point of seeding a bracket is lost when ALL the teams aren't seeded. The top classes in girls basketball did a fine job of seeding all 8 teams this year. Basketball wants to do the top 4 teams too. Why would you only seed a couple instead of all the teams?

5 quality teams in class A? Have you ever seen some of these teams play?

How do you tell a team that just won it's section that they are the worst team at the state tournament? There would be way to much politics there. The whole reason for seeding the top 4 is so that the top two teams don't play in the first round. That would have happened this year in AA with Roseau playing Grand Rapids 1st round, and Warroad / Hermantown 1st round. (with the conventional Section 7 vs 8)

Just ask girls basketball how you do it. Doesn't seem to hard to me. That's just like in NCAA basketball only seeding the top 8 of each bracket then randomly seeding all of them.

If Roseau and Rapids were #1 and #2 how come one of those teams didn't even get voted top 4?

I'd say this year there were 4 really good teams in Class A and a couple other quality teams.

The MSHSL does not divide sections among talent, they divide among location. Nowhere does it say if you win sections you are top in state, just better than the other 7-11 teams in your section.

For what purpose do you want to do this? Because girls basketball does? Whose complaining and why?

All schools are ranked by the participating coaches. Your even mentioning Roseau and Grand Rapids and where they were ranked is moot.

section 7 and 8 met in the first round at last years tournament so they would not have met in the quarterfinals again this year
i think without the seedings it would have been back to the start with 1vs8, 2vs7, etc....

seed them all or none

You're right. Roseau did get voted #2. My comment was in response to someone saying Rapids and Roseau were the top two teams. If that was true going in both of the team would've at least been seeded, but one wasn't and neither received a #1 seed.

I vote for no seeding.
Keep the politics out of high school sports. Some sections will never be respected even if they have a good team.
As a norrtherner I would always be in fear of the 6 southern sections voting as a block.

That wouldn't happen. Very unrealistic. Plus, if they don't have someone looking at the votes, they should. If Woodbury got voted 1st, they should talk to the coaches and have a revote. It's possible that's why Rapids wasn't voted in, or why Roseau only got 2nd, but it will never happen as much as you're saying.

Your poll is missing a button. I vote no seeding necessary.

You only think that because your team got screwed this year. That being said, it's not missing an option, as that option would be incorrect.

So the State Hockey Tournament was incorrect for 60+ years? Hmmm.

I just added that option, and voted for it.

It's interesting to note that the boys basketball coaches are asking for seeding for AAA and AAAA next year, and they only want to seed the top four teams.

I'm in favor of just going with the rotation like they have in the past, and not seeding.

Every one of the remaining teams that didn't make it to the "Biggame" would give their left _ _ _ to be the 8th seed.( Fill in the blanks).

Take section 8 as an example if you don't seed you run the risk of Roseau and Moorhead meeting in the first round playing the winner of Buffalo and Brainerd...while the other bracket pits Monti and BBL and Tech against River Lakes....come on..that makes little sense.

Is seeding necessary? NO. If they want to do it, only do four.

I think seeding the top 4 this year went just great in both classes. I would have to rank the Friday's action as one of the best days of hockey I have ever watched.

One tghing that worked out well for the seeding was that all 3 outstae teams matched up with a metro team this year and 1AA actually put in a competitive team for the first time since 2002. That won't happen every year and more than likely 2 outstate teams will play each other in the first round. It worked out well this year, but 1 year is hardly a reliable sample. 2 of Thursdays games were bad and if 1AA sent their usual team 3 would have been bad. It's tough to get people interested knowing a majority of games aren't going to be competitive.

Maybe they should hire you to oversee the vote and if the coaches get it wrong you can fix it the way you want it.
