Orono Coach Brad Ryan Gone?
Moderators: Mitch Hawker, east hockey, karl(east)
The answer is a resounding Yes!! I've coached Hockey at a high school level in Newburg New York as an assistant coach (I got out when I had my own kids) and coached many youth hockey foortball and baseball teams. Your right about experts thinking they have all the answers and had never even played the sport let alone coached it. As much as it pains coaches these are the people that they are forced to deal with some are great some arn't so great. On the boys side of hockey they are very lucky because in Minnesota the coaches, parents and players are pretty knowledgeable about the sport. On the girls side, there are many coaches, parents and players that have very little knowledge of the game and they constantly need to be taught so that is where communication comes in.
Tenured coaches realize that there is ALWAYS going to be a couple of malcontent & whacky parents with every team they coach. It's an expectation. However, they love to coach and be involved with the kids.........that's the reward.
Communication for coaches is key. Have seperate parent and player meetings as soon as possible after the team(s) have been rostered. Spell out expectations, including communication channel. Set up consequences for breaking team rules. Be consistent on administering consequences when team rules are broken.
H.G. ............lynch mob? Get a clue, become a fan and quit going on and on and on about justifying your over involvement

Looking back I wish I would have been more involved with last seasons hockey, for the most part outside of posting on this board I stayed on the sidelines while the other parents did the screaming and hollering to everyone that would liston. Yes I did my part but from seeing first hand how quickly the pichforks and torches come out, a coach has no choice but to communicate with parents

brad ryan deserved to lose his job in this situation. the AD goes to almost every hockey game at orono and saw the PLEASE BAN ME that he was doing and the mind games that he was playing with the kids. there is no spot in coaching for mind games and this is why he lost his job.
and i'm sorry but two state tournament appearences in the past two years for Orono had nothing to do with coaching! A monkey could have coached these teams to state in that section. The players were not developed by Mr. Ryan at all. Anybody can draw up a powerplay or a breakout!
people who lack facts about who the parents complaining were need to stop guessing! the parents involved were not the parents of the kids who didnt play, rather the opposite.

OK, obviously an Orono parent.Snowman27 wrote:brad ryan deserved to lose his job in this situation. the AD goes to almost every hockey game at orono and saw the PLEASE BAN ME that he was doing and the mind games that he was playing with the kids. there is no spot in coaching for mind games and this is why he lost his job.

If things keep going this way in Orono, it will be tough to find even a monkey to coach this team.

....Can't thank you enough for the time.
The Orono parent is right, as outsiders we have no idea what went on in the program and maybe it was time to start with a clean slate. there were obviously problems there and firing is how the AD has chosen to deal with them. I think he dealt with problems on the girls side the same way too, so maybe the problem isn't the coaches, maybe it's the AD

From the VERY reliable info I have received, you hit it right on the head.

It is so obvious isn't it...well, sorry but you're wrong! It's easy to jump to conclusions about this and blame the AD or the parents when you have nothing to do with the program and lack any details. I'm sure the parents had a lot to do with his dismissal, but you are wrong in assuming that only the parents of the kids that didn't play were complaining.power92 wrote: OK, obviously an Orono parent.

First off (Snowman) your a hockey player want-a-be, that had little to no talent and not enough guts to stay with us as a teammate! You knew you would get cut cuz of your skills. Do not throw mud at our past coach cuz you sat in the stands with your bald headed DAD and thought what it must feel like to go to back-to-back state tournament and not be a part of it.
Second - Coach Ryan is a great COACH! Too bad he had to run into a small group of parents who could not handle their kid playing on the 4th line or backing up our starting goalie for two years. Your the loser in this one! Your right Fedie did got to most games. But, he supported coach Ryan! I hear they started to go after him as well. The school does not stand up for there coaches! Parents should be ashamed! Let us kids play and stay out of it. Now look at the line of coaches just pounding the door down to coach at Orono. Look at the track record with coaches at Orono. Boys - four head coaches in the last five years and a day. Girls program losing the head coach because the parents went after her! Just two years after running the last girls head coach out Do I see a pattern? Yep! Basketball, Soccer, Girls Hockey, Boys Hockey.. get the piture? No support and the parents are to blame!
Ryan and his coaching staff. Start with the professional hockey experence on the staff. Then take a look at the DI playing experience. Look at the Olympic tryout coach Ryan was given and MVP award won while playing in Chicago in the CCHA. Then the coaching in the WCHA, MIAC, WIAC, USHL, and at the high school level over the course of the last 17 years. Working Model Camp, USA camps and other college camps. Played in a national championship game as a player, won a national championship as a coach with the Vulcans in the USHL. Worked with some great coaches in the past 17 years. Mike Guentzel (WCHA-U of M), Mark Mazzoleni (USHL - Green Bay), Kevin Hartzell (USHL - Sioux Falls), Tom Ward (Shattuck - Faribault), Bob Daniels (CCHA - Ferris State), Dave Snuggard (Chaska), Curt Giles (Edina), Tim Hanus (Minnetonka), John Hamre (Blake), Mike Gibbons (Eastview). Ass't coach JYoung - Went to school at Orono - is he coming back? My guess is no way. When you lose and entire staff because of the parents, and lack of support from the school - it must be something. My guess is that it is not the coaching staff. Why did they all walk. AND YES.. THEY WALKED - they did not get fired.
Last - McClue - this old man is a pain in the Donkey. Yes, his kid played and he played alot. But, that old man had it in for Ryan because he would not kiss this Donkey. So, be careful reading this crap from Snowman because it is little johnny himself and there was a lack of support to stand up to these parents. The district is run by the $$ of the parents. Just as Mr Night himself.

Re: Snowman
Compelling post. From your account, there seems to be a lot of "hockeygod/meddling" type parents associated with the team.URNutz wrote:First off (Snowman) your a hockey player want-a-be, that had little to no talent and not enough guts to stay with us as a teammate! Aren't you guys beating this topic into the ground????
Geez I cant believe you still are bantering around this topic still! Get over it and move on for pete's sake. All I have to say is this is kinda riduculous and get over it.
obviously the program over there has some issues and whoever is looking at filling this position better know what they are gettin in to.
Oh well good luck to whoever takes over these positions. Maybe as part of their contract they should have a rider that states no meddling by parents. yeah right good luck from what I have read here.
All I know is I am so grateful I grew up in a community that actually gets it as we have won a pretty good amount of tourneys (the big one not the little one) to our record and have turned out a good amount of collegiate players as well as pros.
Good luck to the next years players and your future coach.
