Last years top SR goalies? where are they headed?

Post by CrossbarandIn99 »

Curious as to where some of last years SR's are headed? anyone know for sure? I know Ellingson to No. Michigan, and Guggenberger to Canadian JR's, bout how about the following?

Hause - Cretin
Jensen - Grand Rapids
Leis - Duluth East
Brooke - Eden Prairie
Johnson - Burnsville
Wood - Tartan
Donahue - Rochester Mayo

I could be missing some to, feel free to add to the list

I know Foley has tried out for some junior A teams (open tryouts) in the NAHL like North Iowa and Fargo Moorhead but I not sure if he made either of the team's invitational tryouts.

So, Mn. Express goalie update

Post by goaler »

I don't know the final cuts but I watched almost every goalie in the tryouts. Here's my take:

Kevin Donahue had a tough time of it and gave up a lot of goals. I personally still think he can play at the next level, but I have no inside track on what the Express think.

Sam Foley from Woodbury looked pretty solid. Very good positioning, good rebound control. He held up well against that level. Would not be surprised to see him advance to the invites.

Landon Snider, Brainerd. In my opinion, by far the best goalie in the open tryouts. Very, very solid positioning, no rebounds, excellent lateral movement, excellent glove hand, and through Sat. only one goal allowed. I'd be shocked if the the Express didn't bring him back for a long, long look.

Clay Casanova, Albert Lea. Decent enough. Still goes down too soon. I doubt he played well enough to come back for the invites.

Reider Jenson, Grand Rapids. Lots of flopping and frequently out of position. Lots of goals given up. I wouldn't bring him back, but what the Express think is often a mystery to me.

Just my take, Southern Minnesota goalie guy here.

I see on the 4 on 4 pro league roster that former Tartan goalie Cary Wood is listed as going to Harvard this year...is this true? Can anyone confirm?

Express tryouts

Post by goaler »

No I don't have anything against the Express. I think it's a good organization. It just seems like they have trouble picking goalies. But that's not just their problem. It must be tough to evaluate how a guy will handle Junior A. It's pretty fast up there and you've got to be pretty sharp. I know two years ago Poderzay from Hibbing made the team out of open tryouts, but didn't last the first month of the season.

The guy who started for them at the end of last year is from Norway, Simon Paulgaard. He started slowly, but developed very quickly. I would not be surprised to see him get some D1 attention if he can keep it up. So the Express will need some good goalies in the pipeline. It's hard to pick one up on the fly, even though they did that two years ago with Nick Hopper. Several NAHL goalies are headed for D1, Carlson from Forest Lake, kid from Baudette whose name escapes me, B.J. O'Brien from Lakeville, Austin Lee from Bloomington. It looks like a pretty good goalie development league for the guys who don't get annointed out of high school.

About Randy Johnson from Burnsville. He is one of the goalies that I didn't get a good look at. I was there for most of two days but I missed most of his time in the net so I can't give you any info.

Donohue can definitely play at the next level....it is too bad he had a bad tryout, but shouldn't the Express have scouted him SOME during the high school season as well?

USHL Blog

Post by dadoc »

It's to nice outside to be playing on the computer but...I came across this site that listed those that tried out for USHL teams this summer. Unfotunately, it does not have lists for Indiana, Ohio, Omaha or Waterloo.

http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key= ... Jd4aRm4rQQ

I saw that the following goalies tried out and from what I can tell their disposition:

A. Crandall - Green Bay - Affiliated list
A. Hess - Sioux City
R. Jensen - Lincoln
N. Kellogg - Tri-City
J. Phillippi - Sioux Falls
H. Yumasalker - Tri-City
J. Howe - Waterloo - Rostered in final 25
B. Hjelle - Ceder Rapids - Affiliated list

Sorry if I missed anyone.

I couldn't find a similar list for other leagues such as the NAHL so not sure who tried out where or their disposition.

Ben Leis eas at Waterloo. He gave up 4 goals in 4 games, but saw quite a few shots. He was also at the Indiana Main tryout camp.

That spreadsheet doesn't have Indiana, Ohio, or Omaha because I was not able to find rosters for them. Waterloo's main camp has not taken place yet, so there is no roster there.

I was hoping Leis would be playing here in Sioux City, but he was not protected prior to the draft. I think he is a quality goalie and has what it takes at the next level.

Kevin Murdoch (S.S.M. U-16) is not a Senior, but he is on the list for Lincoln Stars and has a committment to Mankato. That is pretty good for a late 1990 bithdate. Congrats to Kevin.
