Chowder Cup & Participating Minnesota Teams
Just wondering if anyone knows or cares to speculate on team rosters planning on playing in the Chowder Cup this summer. Last summer the Icecats sent a pretty well loaded roster that did very well. Any info or thoughts on rosters for the Icecats...Jr. Whitecaps Blue / White?
Any comments appreciated.

I see it says that Hirsch is likely sending an IceCats team and CP & Perushek (Burg) Jr Whitecap teams. I'm not sure as to if this is correct?
Jr Whitecaps sending the CP "Blue" squad:

U19 IceCats (Perushek/Burg - which is apparently = to Jr Whitecaps "White" on the website) are doing the Summer Storm tourney but not Chowder Cup from what I can tell?:
July 13-15 Summer Storm Tournament Various London, Ontario

I don't believe that Walser is sending any teams.
Not sure of any other MN teams... I suppose Hirsch could put the U19 IceCats from last summer back together for this but many of those players are college Fr that played D1 this past year so not sure what the point would be?

Interesting discussion too about "AA" vs "AAA" Hockey. All our "AAA" teams really should be classified as "AA" if using the top Canadian designation (assuming they really are at this level...), and I'm guessing that if playing in Canada that many of the young "U19" teams would be either "A" or even "B" unless they really played in their actual age classification vs. playing up.

I'm uninformed when it comes to what may be the true point of this event, but there were a fair number of players with D-I experience sprinkled on the various rosters in the summer of 2006 Chowder Cup...many of them impact players at that. I believe Gigi Marvin played on the eventual champion team along with some UNH players.ghshockeyfan wrote:Not sure of any other MN teams... The Pro-AM league goes back to the 80's, and was an off-season league where NHL, AHL, college and top prep players from Eastern Mass & Rhode Island stayed in "game shape" over the summer. The Chowder Cup evolved as a way to have a more intense series of games, which then evolved into showcase divisions for top prep players..brookyone wrote:I'm uninformed when it comes to what may be the true point of this event, but there were a fair number of players with D-I experience sprinkled on the various rosters in the summer of 2006 Chowder Cup...many of them impact players at that. When they added the women's division the intent was the same, though with Senior A and D1/3 college players in the mix. People have complained about the mismatches that occur, but even more like the fact that they are able to play against college talent and showcase themselves against that level of play.

I can see the value in an area (Boston Area) D1 player playing in this for the ice time, but don't see the value in the cost associated with it for a current D1 player that has to travel a long distance, etc. The benifit for the HS upperclassmen (no matter where they're from) is the visibility or exposure to east coast coaches I suppose. In MN anyway, there are far cheaper/better opportunities to play during the Summer locally for current D1 players vs travel across the US to do so one week(end) in Boston. Although, may be fun and an "experience"/memory and some have $ to burn or others/organizations to support this travel...Hux wrote:The Pro-AM league goes back to the 80's, and was an off-season league where NHL, AHL, college and top prep players from Eastern Mass & Rhode Island stayed in "game shape" over the summer. I think it's plausible individual players from anywhere with D-I experience may want to play in the Chowder Cup for various, perhaps personal reasons. Maybe with friends, acquaintances, teammates, just being asked to or maybe to play against new / different opponents. It seems like a decent event with some quality competition...despite the ever present grumblings of "just a money making endeavor" from the peanut gallery. I'm sure exposure is of primary importance to many participants. I like to imagine players still participate in such events to simply play and have some fun...but that may be just my imagination. Anyway, I was merely looking for any info regarding team rosters in case anyone was aware of such information rather than a tournament merit debate.

I suppose it's plausible that MN college kids have enough money lying around to head off to Boston for a week(end) to play in a tourney. My point was that if we're to see MN kids out there my guess is that they'll be underclassmen seeking exposure vs. current HS seniors and current college players (again, unless they're in the area, or want to just for the experience, etc.).
Canadians & East Coast teams play great hockey. Each area may have a style all its own, etc. It's fun to make memories and travel, etc. Contrary to what many may believe however, I don't think we need to travel to play these teams to improve or train. Anyone can do that in their home area - especially in talent rich MN, so I never buy the notion that to train we need to travel all over North America. Truly, that is only needed for visibility - and even then that's highly debatable if you ask me.
One thing that I think it shows when specific kids/teams travel so much is that they likely have the $$$ to pay their way to D1 schools out east that many others may not be able to afford without an academic scholarship - and we have to remember that not all D1 schools offer athletic $$$. In these scenarios if you're an above average player with lots of $$$ and strong enough academics to at least get accepted that helps too.
As to the specific team rosters, no idea beyond that which was posted above. To be honest, until I hear otherwise, I have no idea how many of the likely teams listed above are actually headed out there.

Chowder Cup
Just a quick FYI, I saw a schedule for the 2007 Chowder Cup...from that, it appears there is the Minnesota Icecats White, Minnesota Icecats Blue and the Minnesota Jr. Whitecaps that will be participating.
Good luck to the Minnesota teams / players!

It is amazing the level of talent that is playing in this event from outside New England. As mentioned earlier, it is one thing to come to Boston to be showcased, but another completely when you are already a D1 player. I think the main thing is that the girls, while obviously very competitive, also want to have fun. I think this is why so many are willing to to join teammates who live in the area on various teams, even when they need to take a plane to get here.Bensonmum wrote:I get the feeling there are girls out there who do absolutely nothing but play hockey all summer.

Many rosters are available here:
http://www.pointstreak.com/prostats/sta ... sonid=1788
By clicking on the team name. Many great MN gals out there as teams or as individuals on non-all-mn teams...
It appears that there are 3 MN teams out there that will also appear in the MN "Int'l cup" (or some configuration of these 3 teams will anyway)... I assume those 3 teams will be at the top of this local event in MN...

I look at these two as the equivalent of the old Team MN Elite of years past in MN. There were two teams for a couple years in that group, each amazingly talented... There also is a very good IceCats U19 group too... I would say these three are the top AAA teams in MN with only a select few other teams that could even hope to play with them...brookyone wrote:Jr. Whitecaps look like a heckuva team as well. Not as experienced as the Icecats Elite perhaps...but I wouldn't be surprised to see them do well. Best of luck to the Jr. Whitecaps too!

This would be my only concern re: this travel. Yes, more diversity of opponents than if staying in MN, but maybe with that comes some lack of competition in the early rounds/pool play? I guess you can see this at home too... Still can't beat the fun, experience, and likely some visibility with the travel I suppose...SportsMa wrote:Wow. They are certainly rolling altho I am sure they are hoping for more competitive games as the play goes on.
Thanks for the updates.

And as soon as I post that I saw this result which looks like it must have been a great game:
http://www.pointstreak.com/prostats/box ... eid=519004
I assume that Ashlan Lambert on the Global Selects is from EP.
Also, here's the IC Elite:

Sounds like two good games coming up tonight?:
IC Elite vs NAHA 7:50P
IC White vs Assabet 7:50P
