Vikings in trouble for opening day?

Post by dangla. »

for all you vikings fans out there that means winning or losing season

Expected Opening Day depth chart: Tarvaris Jackson, Brooks Bollinger, Tyler Thigpen

Yikes. Jackson, Bollinger and Thigpen may sound more like a personal-injury law firm than an NFL quarterback trio, but it's actually the Vikings' Nos. 1, 2 and 3 at QB heading into training camp. Brad Childress and the Vikings brass are confident in second-year man Jackson, but it's tough to be 100 percent sure about the kid based on last year's late-season performance.

Though Jackson played well in relief during mop-up duty in a blowout loss to the Jets on Dec. 17, he had one of the most underwhelming performances out of any QB last season in the Vikes' nationally televised 9-7 loss in Green Bay. Jackson went 10-for-20 for a paltry 50 yards with an interception that night, and left every Vikings fan whispering and mumbling about Brady Quinn.

Well, Minnesota didn't make any waves with the quarterback position in either the early rounds of the draft (they passed on Quinn) or the free-agent market this off-season. Jackson's their guy. And if it's not him, it's the undersized, over-achieving Bollinger.

As for Tyler Thigpen? Well, he threw for over 3,000 yards last season...for the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. Combined, the three young signal callers have started 11 NFL games — none of them being playoff contests.

Vikings fans, buckle up. This could be interesting.

Expected Opening Day depth chart: Bobby Wade, Troy Williamson, Sidney Rice, Billy McMullen

Not to pile on the Vikings faithful, here, but c'mon. It's one thing to have some question marks at quarterback when you've got proven veteran wideouts to pick up the slack. But Minnesota's wide receiver depth chart looks more like an NFL Europe team's corps than an NFL contender's.

Bobby Wade had a career year last season in Tennessee, and still only had 33 receptions. One more underwhelming campaign and it will be about time to write off former top-10 selection Troy Williamson as a colossal draft bust, second-round selection Sidney Rice is still very raw, and Billy McMullen couldn't break through on a 2005 Eagles team whose top receivers were Todd Pinkston and a batch of unknown rookies.

Brad Childress is an offensive mind. He'll make due with what he's got and that rushing attack's going to be out of this world. But the passing game? Eek. I'm not so sure.

Dangla you sound a little less then enthusiastic...not that all the facts aren't the true reality. :(

Jackson is a mobile player though...and this is good, it adds another dimension to the position which this team really needs.
I think with some time and a good preseason to get some experience, and a bit more comfortable he's got promise....Yeah I remember the GB game it was like, is this the same guy?
We are used to the Moss and culpepper deal? where they just stepped right in and made things happen?
IDK hopefully they can manage a good season..I'll wait and see what happens before we all gather together to cook them over the hot coals!!

Opening day? How about every day. Don't get me wrong, I bleed purple, and I would absolutely love to come in here in January and tell everybody what a dope I was after the Vikes go 13-3, but I defy anybody to find me more than 4 wins here:

Atlanta
at Detroit
at Kansas City (playoff team)
Green Bay
at Chicago (Super Bowl team)
at Dallas (playoff team)
Philadelphia (playoff team)
San Diego (playoff team)
at Green Bay
Oakland
at NY Giants (playoff team)
Detroit
at San Francisco
Chicago (Super Bowl team)
Washington
at Denver

If Vick wasn't such a Grade A moron, I don't think I'd see more than 3 wins here, but since he is, I'll probably give the purple a week 1 "W".

I think this has to be season where we're looking for the young offense to develop and look forward to 2008.

Cross yer fingers, yer toes, yer legs, because this is, at first glance, going to be a kick in the junk for fans of the Purple Passion this season.

Best case scenario, they beat the Packers twice :)

well, we can hope that Philladelphia drops Kelly Holcomb so we can pick him up as a solid backup to Tavaris at QB, Brooks Bollinger is horrible.

Guys, what's the bad news? A QB plays bad in his first year? Wow, that's new. After they saw that Brad Johnson was over the hill and we weren't making the playoffs, Jackson should've started more. But remember guys, we were two bad calls away from an 8-8 season last year, which would've made the playoffs, (big reason I don't like that all plays aren't reviewable) our defense is immaculate, our passing game will be better than it was last year, all we need to do is improve our passing game and we'll be twice the team we were last year.

All that being said, our schedule is twice what it was last year. Without flukes, I see two Detroit wins, Atlanta, one Green Bay (just being realistic), Oakland, San Francisco, hopefully Washington, Phily, or KC, and an upset here or there to put us at .500 or 9-7. Plus, it's all about streaks, if we get to 4-0, which is entirely possible, who's to say we couldn't have the game of the season at Chicago like last year, but just not screw this one up?

Wait, hold up guys, the football season is so far away, we shouldn't be talking about, let alone thinking about, this right now 8)

I agree with the 4 you say.

BUT

In the remaining games (and I do understand it will be easy)
-We were one bad play from beating the Bears last year; it's possible
-When we meet Green Bay, all bets are off; no way we're losing 4 in a row to them, we were one bad call away from beating them the first time we played them
-Washington, we beat them last year, probably will depend on the roll either team is on.
-Phily- Same as Washington

The rest of the games will depend on our rookies. ESPN guys said they think Adrian Peterson will have a better year than Joseph Addai did last year. We don't know how Jackson will do. I'm not saying we're going to be the best team in the league, we could easily go 3-13, but we could also go 10-6 with some good seasons by guys we don't know how they'll perform.

Heck, this year we finished 6-10. If all plays were reviewable, that's 8-8. Not screwing up against Chicago, no way we would've against San Francisco. Change those ones, we're at 9-7, easily making the playoffs and possibly in a better mental state and with a few more wins. Change a few minor things and the Vikings were a 13-3 team last year. And we could be twice as good this year. So only time will tell. Just my opinion.

This is my prediction for the season.
1st down- run for 4
2nd down- run for 2
3rd down- screen for minus 1
4th and 5- punt
I am basing this on a very scientific formula.

This is what they did for the whole BOOFIN year in 06.

Yeah ! If nothing else this year I'd like to see some exciting football, instead of the same old predictable stuff.

Boof the Vikings.

Here is a franchise whose "glory years" are linked to losing 4 Super Bowls...and never playing well in one.

They havent been to the Super Bowl in 30 years.

They were owned by a guy who was only intereseted in buying low and selling high. Now, they are owned by a guy who is a genius at real estate development but doesnt know squat about football.

They have no proven talent on offense at the skill positions.

Their defense is average at best.

They have drafted poorly.

Their head coach has never been one before.

The talent level on the team is the worse I have seen and I have seen them all.

Boof the Vikings.
