Midwest Selects

Ive been hearing some talk of kids who got asked to play in the Midwest selects tournament coming up. From what I'm hearing is that the tournament is for pretty good players but not top notch players. I'm not at all familiar with the tournament so what are your thoughts?

If you are referring to the North vs South vs East vs West selects, then here goes:

Money maker for the apparel guys. They get to sell jerseys for the players (some are just plain butt ugly) and sweatshirts to the mommys.

Not all top notch players, but some do show. Most teams are not "selected" per their region. Most teams are coaches that hand pick players and talk to other coaches. Some teams will be short, and some can be loaded. I've even seen near complete AAA teams show as a team under the disguise of a "region" team. I've also seen 2nd year kids play in the first year divisions. No one seems to really check or care, which is fine for this kind of thing.

I was at the Midwest Selects tournament, my son's team didn't do so hot (2nd year PeeWee or Major as they call it).

And yes, we bought a t-shirt..............

I think the quality of players was AAA or above, for the most part.

Probably the best kids I saw (I only saw PeeWee Major games for the most part) were both on the 'East' team, Pat McFadden reminds me of Gaborik - explosive acceleration and wicked stickhandling, BUT he's big and can handle himself. Their goalie Chris Malone was amazing - BIG kid too. The rumor was he's from Burnsville, which shows the whole North/South/East/West regional thing was a crock.

On the other hand, I saw some players who may not even make their associations PeeWee A team - so there was wide range of talent.

of course they did! I was there and didn't see or hear anyone complain
about not having the best of the best of the best of the best of the best
players. these tournaments are about going out and having fun playing hockey. it's summer time and people have allot going on; you get the best kids AVAILABLE for a fun weekend.
if some one makes a couple bucks it bothers people. the talent was decent
and it gave some kids a chance to play that may not otherwise get opportunities to play in top level tournaments.

I'm definitely not against someone making a buck or kid's having a fun time doing something they like but then let's get real. Call it the Midwest "Summer hockey let's have funs; while the guys that rented the ice fleece the parents for a Fleece jacket they think will impress their buddies and the youth coach". Not SELECTS. A bit of misnomer don't you think. At least the jersey will look OK at the rink this fall. Usually though those Midwest Select jerseys have god-awful color schemes and get tossed in the bottom of the closet after wearing it to the rink once or twice. That's the reality.

quit going! everyone of these is watered down but they are still fun.
you should call the guy who runs it and complain that it doesnt meet your standards and he should rename it ; or mabe you could su him for misleeding you! mabe he will send you a jacket!

Actually...never wasted the money on this...knew better. The fact remains, it's no Select program. How about I tell him on here...he probably reads this bored. I suggest he rename it to....Midwest Millionaires.

Hey Faker - RELAX, it's a slow day at the office so I'm just playing with you guys trying to burst some young, proud dad's bubble after he tossed a couple grand on the weekend for fees, hotel, gas, wife's shopping spree, family meals and drinks on the coaches thinking his kid made something special. It's called trolling or being a wet-blanket; among other things. Looks like it is working...

Bitter much, UnderCover? Wow, sounds like you think you've been wronged somehow. If you weren't there and had nothing to do with it, why are you whining so much? Sounds like the kids had fun, and so far I haven't read too much about kids being the best around. Maybe you should focus on more positive comments instead of being the jerk you come across like on this forum. And no, I didn't have a kid there(he declined the invitation). The tournament is obviously a success for the hosts, players and the parents. Otherwise, they wouldn't have one every year. Get over yourself and what you think should be "Select" hockey and let the kids, parents, coaches and fans have fun.

in other words you don't know what your talking about; but you heard from a guy who heard from his friends uncles cousin that the tournament
was good but not every top player was there.

I had the opportunity to coach that Major Peewee East team that SRV wrote about. The major Peewee division was competitive but of course all the best players were not there. It's summer and many people have plans on the weekends. It was solid mid tier 94 AAA level and teams consisted of star players along with roll players as they always do. One our team every single player contributed something of value and even the roll players should fall in the top 15 - 20 in thier clubs tryouts this fall. We were fortunate to win it again this summer (3 straight with this group) and I was priveledged to be part of a great comeback in the championship game as we trailed 5-1 halfway through the game and came back to win in regulation 6-5 with the last goal at 27 seconds remaining. It's something those kids will remember for a long time. Actually the jerseys were quite nice as they were the RBK practice jerseys the Wild use and the kids really liked them. You can scrutinize it any way you care to but the kids had fun made some new freindships and took another step forward in their hockey acumen. Can't take that away from them with arogance and free enterprise bashing...

Midwest "Selects"...coaches make their selections...maybe their first choices are available, maybe not. It is summer after all and people do (should) have lives outside the hockey rink. The fact is that the kids who are "selected" to play in this tournament have a great time. They meet other kids, makes some friendships, see these new friends throughout the year at their various associations. That is the beauty of summer hockey. Great and lasting friendships are made with kids you might not have otherwise met.

exactly why alot of kids love summer hockey and going a tourney or 2 playing with other kids...nothing to do with "living through the kids" or "wasting time and money"...these boys actually enjoy playing with other kids that aren't the same anklebenders they play with all winter.

Don't be such haters all the time boys.
