I was at the SSM vs SW game on Friday night. SSM did not look as good as I was expecting, but I though the SW team looked a lot worse than I was expecting. I know they play only a couple of times a week so they really cannot get a flow and some of them are playing football, but I thought maybe a little better game. I was impressed by Jordy Murray from SSM Their goalie was not tested. From the SW team, Gardiner from tonka looked pretty good as did Leer from Edina and Rush from EP. I think it is really hard for these kids to get a real flow going from the little amount of time they have. I did enjoy the game and will probably watch a couple more before they are done.BC Guy wrote:Did anyone see Shattuck play? How do they look?

tuckered out?
The players that are playing football and the Elite League are getting tuckered out. Warm weather, demanding football practices and games, travel south to play high caliber hockey is wearing the kids down. They would be better off getting a break from the hockey and the travel and focus on the season once it begins.

Don't know how those boys do it. I played football in high school. I remember being tired and beat up the next day.hipcheck wrote:The players that are playing football and the Elite League are getting tuckered out. Shattuck
I did not see them play on Friday, but I heard that they totally dominated the game against Southwest. That team has more D1 players committed than Shattuck does. I did watch them destroy Northwest 10-1. I thought that top line of Toews, Stepan, and Murray was great. Toews had 3 Stepan 2 and Murray 1. I thought the big question mark was going to be replacing the 4 defenseman, I thought there D played very well. They look as good as they did last year, and they won the National Championship. Shattuck -
No doubt this is a very talented team. However it would be nice to see them be forced to play by the same rules during the Elite 1 schedule. Two games on Saturdays rolling four lines and not being able to use dedicated power play or penalty kill specialists.

Power play
I did not see the friday game, but I think all the coaches could do a better job about there line changes. I saw alot of 2 min. shifts from the Elite teams. Shattuck just got there team picked last week. I would have to say the 10-1 game did not have alot to do with power plays. That team is very deep.

Re: Power play
I've always wondered where that philosophy comes from, or what, why, and if coaches think that it can be a productive stratagey...watch a eastern european team and if you see a 30 sec shift it's rare these guys are on and off the ice so much they gotta shovel the snow in front of their bench.hockey nut wrote: but I think all the coaches could do a better job about there line changes. You can say it's the player that doesn't come off.... but that is a coaching issue.
For hockey good trainers teach fast twitch muscle excercise, not as much long endurance stuff, so I just don't know why we see this long shift stuff so much.
In my days I've challenged players to do 2 minute sprints to drive home the point..sounds stupid doesn't it... you can't sprint for 2 min...but the games about a series of sprints with a 50 yrd dash thrown every once and a while.
We'd all do hockey a favor by keeping the shifts short but expolsive..

Re: Power play
I agree totally. It's happening in Elite 2 also. I watched section 1 vs 6 Sunday and the same line started all 3 periods for Section 1 and the shortest shift they took to start a periond was a little over 2 minutes. It was absolutely ridiculous and needless to say twice they gave up goals at the end of the shift...no kidding...duh ..wonder whyCan't Never Tried wrote:I've always wondered where that philosophy comes from, or what, why, and if coaches think that it can be a productive stratagey...watch a eastern european team and if you see a 30 sec shift it's rare these guys are on and off the ice so much they gotta shovel the snow in front of their bench.hockey nut wrote: but I think all the coaches could do a better job about there line changes. REASON for long shifts
If the league would let us play 20 minute periods the kids would not be so worried about getting enough ice time and not try to stretch their shifts out. I am the Section 1 coach and I don't know how to make em change on the first shift of the period if they don't come to the bench when you holler for a change. Seems to me that they scored on two of the shifts and did not get scored on. They were to long though. We need to fix that.

Re: REASON for long shifts
Sioux Fan I agree that you as the coach should not have to yell at these players to get off the ice, they have been playing long enough to know that you go 30-45 seconds balls to the walls and then get off the ice. I know one way to stop it and I think you probably do too.Sioux Fan wrote:If the league would let us play 20 minute periods the kids would not be so worried about getting enough ice time and not try to stretch their shifts out. With all respect.....it's simple.... actions speak louder.. tell them 45 sec max...don't do it...you sit.Sioux Fan wrote:If the league would let us play 20 minute periods the kids would not be so worried about getting enough ice time and not try to stretch their shifts out. Of course they won't like it, but it's really the only effective way.
You can be a friend or a coach.. once they sit they usually won't do it again unless you become slack on the rule, you have to be fair and use common sense, ie: if there pinned down in the D zone you don't want them to bail out for fear of punishment.
They can easily figure out that I can skate a whole bunch of 30-45 sec. shifts or I can skate one 2 min. shift and sit the rest of the period.
Your overall team play will improve and you will out tempo your opponents.
Good luck!

I still think shock collars would be effective....Can't Never Tried wrote: With all respect.....it's simple.... actions speak louder.. tell them 45 sec max...don't do it...you sit.

Re: Shattuck
Well, if you play like a "team" instead of individuals trying to rack up your own points to impress someone, the outcome might be a bit different???hockey nut wrote:I did not see them play on Friday, but I heard that they totally dominated the game against Southwest. Are these the same National Champs that were beat by AHA last year?
Does that change your thoughts about who wins an Elite League game just a bit...?
Ahhhhhhhh - an interesting position....radar wrote:You are correct about the loss to Holy Angels, but when it counted, Shattuck won the national title and didn't lose to a team they should have beaten.
But you missed the point....so I will make it a bit clearer......
The point is:
When a team, PLAYS LIKE A TEAM................Anything can (and sometimes does) happen. e.g. AHA win.
So to make a big deal about who wins an Elite league contest, and by what score.......is like trying to fertilize a farm field with a fart!
Do you get it now?
