B-ville will walk over those teams. B-ville will be interesting to watch this year... I'm thinking that they might cause some problems for the cake eaters.

You would think that the "premeir" holiday tourney could adjust their brackets to reflect say the state tourney results instead of an early season tourney from last year. Edina in the silver? Burnsville in the bronze? Let's see some common sense.

A state tournament birth does not necessarily mean a trip to the gold division. Remember this is a tournament for the enjoyment of playing. The outcome has no bearing on how you will finish the year. Yes you may play real well, but the winners of the gold are not always the state tournament teams.....I think I know that for a fact.

I had heard that Edina turned down the chance at the gold division, don't know if it is true. But if they did, why??

Anyway the tournament is a great time to watch many teams in a short time.

I can tell you right now that will not happen. I was picking Edina to win the whole thing, but I am changing my mind and will wait till I see more teams play..... I see Edina having enough trouble with getting out of the section. Only time will tell.....

Schwann's accepts the High School teams prior to the last year's state tournament. So they don't know who finishes where. What is amazing to me is the size of this tournament. It's growing every year. Wonder when we'll see a fourth bracket added to boys. I'm pretty sure the girls have 4. What would it take to get Roseau and Warroad down here for the tournament? I say we make 50 brackets and play off every single team in high school hockey. Now wouldn't that be fun. Anyway, I'll be at the x cheering on anyone playing Neutron's team ;) ...

Unless things changed Edina has their own holiday tournament though on a different weekend. They'd have to committ to Schwanns pretty early to free up 3 games on their schedule.

Ummm... Goldy, they're already playing in the Schwanns Cup. Just in the Silver Division.

Here's an opinion that is sure to raise a Hornets nest. I have been watching Edina Hockey for years and believe this to be true...

1.) Because of their numbers. the financial situation and competition between familys the Edina Youth Association is able to do well.
- take kids to every available camp
- pay for expensive training with experts
- run a total 1st rate association with quality training at all levels
- pay for battle tested veteran coaches

However, as the years wear on it takes less and less talented players and every High School Team only needs 12 to 15 players to compete....most places can find 12 to 15 with the desire and resources....Plus, there is only so much training before raw athletic ability kicks in and after Bantams size begins to become less of a factor... Additionally, I see the interest level in many Edina players begin to fade...lets face it they all were told they were superstars as youngsters and have received like training and could not help developing a pompous arrogant attitude...however, when the handwriting appears on the wall many of those same families become extremely jealous and those with elite hockey playin kids become even more pompous...just when you thought it was not possible....

All this and other petty jealousy stuff leaves Edina vunerable...otherwise they would be unstoppable...however, I am less than convinced that they play much like a team anymore and can be beaten regularily...even by a bunch of kids in Roseau...

I would say this theme holds true for Holy Angels/Hill Murray and others as well...If your willing to look you will find a team or two with this type of attitude win a championship...However, most times the hockey gods step in and let the kids with the team prevail.

HOFam'r,

FYI, The grand total the Edina hockey association pays all of their coaches is $ 0.00. Everyone is a volunteer.

The kids seem to play pretty well as a team in the youth program, so shouldn't it be the job of the HS coaches to get them to play as a team.

HOFam'r,

There isn't one thing in your post that I would strongly agree with, but many that I would strongly disagree. You basically come off as jealous of very successful hockey programs.

Just when I thought that I was a bitter crusty old man someone comes along and makes me feel tame..

I don't know about other schools but when my kids went to Hill, most of the kids in all of the activities were from hard working middle class families that had someone working 2 jobs to send their kids to the school, or a grand parent that helped out. There were a few families that had money but it wasn't like they were able to buy their way onto the hockey teams. Just like any winning program in the state the kids have to win a spot on the team, At some of the private schools (and edina) they have to work twice as hard as other kids to keep that spot from year to year because there are 100 other kids just waiting to take their place.....it's easy to point fingers and say things that can't be substantiated but it's not always as easy as it looks to play for a private school (including Edina)

LIke I said...sure to raise a Hornet's nest.

HockeyGod- i am not bitter and certainly not crusty...However, I am realistic...go ahead and convince me what a wonderful team enviroment Hill produces...tell me how there is no bickering amounst parents and tell me that Hill parents are more concerned with little Jimmy's math grades then they are with his scoring totals.

packerboy- nine titles and 1 in the last two decades...times change packerboy...get a grip...you just have an fascination with green and gold

Nuet: no picture?? I suggest you stick with pics (sure to get one now)

CNT/RL- figured it wouldn't take you 2 guru's to jump in...must be another slow day in the cube CNT...

Really? well regardless they always have great coaching....a definate advantage at that level...the coaching becomes more equal in high school...

Theres always some bickering with the parents, I have yet to see a team where there isn't a little bickering. As for grades, they are more important to most parents at Hill than how many goals there kid scores. Most Hill parents have their kids at that school because they want there child to be a success in life at whatever they choose to do and hockey is just a part of some students life.

The biggest difference I see between the privates and the public schools is in the privates you won't be held back by bad teaching or coaching, you are allowed to go as far as your skills will take you...this isn't always the case at some public schools.

Well HOF, they won 3 in the 80's, the last in '88, and one in the 90's and this decade aint over yet... which is an important fact considering the current talent level of the team.

So, even though times do change, whats changed with regard to Edina hockey?

They always were and will always be the original and one and only "cakeaters".

PB...I think you said what has changed best...3 in 80's, 1 in 90's and 0 in 2000's...pretty much covers it...
