They're not much better. One game they had over 30 shots attempted and only 8 were even on frame
Hey, how 'bout doze Gophers
Moderators: Mitch Hawker, east hockey, karl(east)
Hey, here is one thats sure to be a hit goin out to all of you minnhock guys and gals after another special football weekend.
Its by Joel Maturi and its called Glens Gone.
Everybodys high on Gopher nation
Everybodys tryin to tell me that Brewsters the key
Packerboy tried to bore me with a sermon
Buts its plain to see they cant comfort me
Sorry Gopher fans for the imposition
I think Ive got the strength to carry on
After that bowl game, I made a quick decision
Now its up to me, oooh what will be
Glens gone Oh I, Oh Id
better learn how to face it
Glens gone Oh I, Oh Id
pay the devil to replace him
Glens gone-what went wrong
Woke up Sunday morning, looked in the mirror
Im as worn as the fans leaving the already half empty stands
None of us are gettin any younger
Now I can see, Gopher football has taken its toll on me
Glens gone (chorus)
We spent eternity marred in medicroty
But a loss to Florida Atlantic chokes my thougts away
Brewster's rah rah helps dissolve the memories
But he can never be what Glen was to me
Glens goooooooooooone Oh I , Oh Id
better learn how to face it
Glens gone, Glens gone
Pay the devil to replace him
Glens gone------what went wrong
And hey stayed tuned for another new one by Maturi comin out soon called:

I watched the Gopher game on Saturday night.
All of my kids went to the game (half the crowd).
A few things struck me:
1. The athletes Purdue has are bigger , faster and stronger.
2. The Gophers are hapless. How in the boof do you drop a football in the open field with no one near you on the way to the end zone. How do you allow a 95 yard kickoff return to open the BIG 10 season. Geezo, Beezo.
3. The Gophers have a ton of heart. They battled until the end when it was obvious early what the outcome would be.
4. They have a good idea what they want to do on offense and the things they do fit with their personel.
5. They really arent very good and although there are a lot of "giveaways" , they are a result of them being physically over matched rather than sloppy.
6. Brewster and his staff maintained their poise and enthusiasm early on and that transferred to the players to keep it form being a blowout.
7. Adam Weber is a tough competitior and he will be fine.

This is another white flag season...it was pretty deflating to see them kick the ball away from the super return guy on the opening play, only to have the guy they planned on covering the whole time make em look like fools.
Weber is a bright spot and has some promise but at what point does a Big Ten school have to have a red shirt freshman as their starting QB.....I don't get that.
It's getting difficult to look fwd. to weekend football...oh geez it's beyond that.

Here is that latest hit from Joel Maturi comin out to Gopher Nation.
Its called Glennie Come Back and hey guys and gals , this one is dedicate to all of the" Fire Mason" crowd who has gotta be feelin pretty good right now. Enjoy.
Spending all my time, all of your money, firing all of my coaches
Doin anything just to get them off of my mind
But Sunday morning comes, Im right back where Paul Giel started again
Tryin to forget you Glen is just a waiste of time
Glennie come back, any kind of fool could see
There was somethin in just gettin to a bowl game
Glennie come back, you can blame it all on me
We were wrong and this Gopher Nation stuff is real lame
All week long, wearin a Goldy Gopher head dress
Trying to keep up a smile that hides a tear
But when Saturday comes, I get that sick to my stomach feelin again
How I wish to God that you were here
(Everybody now)
Glennie come back........

I don't second the sentiment, I was giving Brewster the chance to prove if he was a "lou holtz type coach" (substance and hype without the lisp) or a "wacker" type coach - all positive and no substance.
packerboy how about a song to the tune "when you're hot you're hot"
but with the phrase, "when you suck you suck"
fighting all who rob or plunder

This just in, THE COACH MATTERS in the Big 10.
NW is awful, they wouldn't be this bad if Randy Walker hadn't passed away. Pat Fitzgerald is a great guy and will probably be a great coach but the 'Cats are going backwards under him for the time being.
MIN wouldn't be this bad if Texas Tech had not come back and stolen Mason's job. The Gophers have no identity, IN and ILL are proof that a coach needs three years time to prove or disprove their worth.
ILL is finally rolling under the Zooker, his first season/s looked a lot like what the Gophers are currently doing. Zook finally has his Florda recruiting pipeline up and operational. Ron Turner wouln't have them 5-1 right now.
IN is also improved. Terry Hoepner passed away prior to the season but his recruits and system are finally in place. Cam Cameron would not have had IU beating the Gophers by 20 and winning at Iowa.

Well, I dunno IS.
I guess I could cut/ patse the 'kickoff' post of this thread as a retort.
All of those programs have struggled mightily over the years coach after coach, after coach.
Some have done better than others but they all manage to get fired or die or leave before they do.
Does this mean that all these major institutions dont kow how to hire a football coach?
I think that there just are places where it is tough to win for one reason or another.
But hey, lets sing that last verse to "Billy" Joel Maturis new hit single:
Brewster will never put it all together
The losses have given me a chance to see
Have you used up all the Moroon and Gold in your heart
Nothin left for me, aint there nothin left for me
Glennie come back, any kind of fool could see
There is somehtin in just gettin to a bowl game
Glennie come back, you can blame it all on me

I dunno either.
I could go back a couple of pages and find out what I said a year ago but I think it went something like this.
I don't mind that they fired Mason but it shouldn't have been based on one half of football, yet it clearly was. If Mason was Maturi's guy going into the "whatever bowl" vs. Texas Tech then he should have been his guy regardless of what happened during that game.
I know your work here on the U's current state of affairs may be a bit tongue and cheek, but I agree, if Mason is still at his post they are a better team right now. Mason's time-consuming offensive ground attack was the Gopher's best defense.
One of the analysts on the BTN said it best, "you're offense has to match your defense, under Mason it did, under Brewster it doesn't."
Brewster's Spread-O that can yield lighting fast 3 and outs are killing them on the scoreboard right now.
With a few seasons of the Brewster Administration in place maybe he can match the D with the O and contend once in a while, something IU, ILL, NW, and MIN can only hope to do.

Its hard to say whether Mason would have the same record right now or not.
Mason's offense matched his defense but it also matched his personell. (Barber, Maroney etc). Could he grind it out with guys that are there now?
I think Mason's 'body of work' will be difficult to beat.
Lets hope Mason isnt looked at like Cal Stoll 20 years from now.

I think he could, Barber was a walk on and Maroney wasn't highly recruited - only a couple of D1 schools offered him anything. Setterstrom was more highly recruited, but as a wrestler. Make no mistake about it Mason's defenses sucked, but he could turn run of the mill guys into an offensive juggernaut. Brewster took these same kind of players and is trying to turn them into flashy run and shoot guys. That may be his offense but he's trying to run it with Mason's players.
Brewster reminds me of Chilly in that he may know what he wants to do but he doesn't have the personel to do it, yet he'll force his way on the guys he's got. You can't put a square peg into a round hole no matter how hard you try, how else van you explain that 3 of your offensive linemen are pro bowl caliber guys yet the Vikes have one of the worst O-lines in the league?

Well , this thread started a while back as a reaction to the "Fire Mason " crowd with a suggestion that if you do that you need to be careful of what you want, because you just might get it.
There is no way that Brewster can turn this thing around before he gets fired.
If you decide to fire Mason , then you should have had a big name in mind to come here. (Like Basketball lucked out with Tubby)
"Old Squints" looks pretty good right now, doesnt he.

I feel bad for Brewster, he really stepped into it.
But Gopher Nation will turn on him before he can get us back to the heights of the Mason era, if he even has that capability.
Hopefully when they fire Brewster 3/4 years from now after he repeats the Wacker era, they will have a big name to replace him.
They sometimes say that you have to hit rock bottom befeore you can recover. Well, hello rock bottom.
