Peewee Tournaments

Post by frederick61 »

For those interested, the first local peewee tournament that I see of interest is the Hall of Fame at Blaine Nov 8 (Thursday) to Nov 11 (Sunday). Teams playing are Champlin Park, South St Paul, Anoka and Andover in one division and Apple Valley, Crow River, Blaine and Coon Rapids in another division. Games are at Fogerty (northwest corner of 10 and Central or 65). There is also a Bantam A and girls U12A tournaments.

There is a Duluth tournament the week of Nov 3, but thats deer hunting opener for me. For those interested the teams are Eden Prairie, Lakeville North, Coon Rapids and Duluth East in one division and Edina, Elk River, Lakeville South, and Chaska in the other division. Anybody have other information?

It wasn't a tournament, but tonight I saw Peewee A game with Lakeville North beating Prior Lake 2-1. It was an entertaining game. Prior Lake was the larger more physical team, the North team was smaller and quicker. North dominated play in the opening period and in the third period. They scored their first goal in the first few minutes of the game on a power play when Prior Lake went with their third line and one defense man. The goal was scored on from about 10 feet out on an open net with no defense in the area.

North scored a second period goal on a long breakout pass that from inside their blue line to inside the Prior Lake zone. Prior Lake played a relentless style that I have seen them play over the past two years. They played within their game and scored a power play goal in the second to end the scoring. Except for a brief period at the start of the third period Prior Lake never panicked especially under North's pressure.

One thing the game pointed out that I had forgotten is the District 8 running time game rules. The first and second period were 17 minute running and the third set to even out the hour (District 8 has a different approach for third period time for league games). I don't like the approach because it leads to a dump and chase type of hockey since it runs time off the clock if a long pass is missed and icing is called.

The only other comment I will make is that Prior Lake had 7 penalties and North 4. The last penalty was called on Prior Lake with 3:45 on the clock and Prior Lake did not get back to 5 on 5 until 37 seconds were left, ruining what could have been an exciting end to the game.

I still can't belive that you only play 1 hour games with straight time periods. I know that you have a major crunch in ice time like most associations. We are so luck here in the North. We play all 3 periods 17 minute stopped time for ALL games. We are very luck up here and yet we always need more Ice.

I saw a Peewee B game this afternoon at Apple Valley High School Rink, one of the few sheets that is actually connected to high school building. The sheet always seemed longer then most to me, and it turns into an indoor tennis court in the spring (or at least it use to). The game was between Farmington and Eastview (Eastview shares the rink with Apple Valley). The game was played in three stop time periods (12/12/14 minutes) and was one of the more entertaining games I have seen so far. Farmington won 2-1.

They dominated the first period, but Eastview came back in the second and it turned into an up and down game. The refs did an excellent job and the teams played well for an early season game, committing few mechanical errors (off sides, icing, etc.). I was surprised by the number of fans in the stands, I estimated somewhere around a 150 watched the game.

Farmington scored first when a lose puck came to a Farminton forward just off the bench. It was drilled and the clank of the puck was easily heard. Near the end of the first period, one of the most unusual plays happened. I never saw one like it.

The Eastview goalie froze the puck, but without any Farmington players around. The refs didn't blow the whistle and the goalie got confused and with no ref taking it, the puck ended up in the net. The ref signaled goal and set up a face off in neutral ice, but a dialogue started between the Farmington coach and the refs. I think the coach told them to play on and not post the point. Anyway, thats what happened. The score remained 1-0.

Both goalies played well in the third period. Each gave up a goal that flopped over their shoulders from the front about 10 feet out. Only 3 penalities were called in the game, two on Farmington. And with stop time, Eastview got to pull the goalie and had two shots to tie in the last 20 seconds. It was a sunny day outside and on the way back I drove past a golf course with more than a couple golfers swinging away and thought only in Minnesota, ice hockey to golf. It was a good day and the Farmington coach deserve to win.

Delano is or was a small town 30 miles west of the cities, but now it is in transition. Small is growing. It has become a mixture of old homes surrounded by its own ring of development. However, its two most significant features remain. The Crow River runs through the center of the town and the Interstate 394 ends as highway 12 making a 90 degree turn at the main stop lights. I have tried to make that turn in rush hour traffic, it is a tough one. The local hockey association calls itself Crow River.

About a 1/2 mile from the river on a bluff is the Delano Ice Rink, just off Tiger Drive (I love that name). The rink has an older feel to it with seating for about 500 people. It would be a cold arena as the weather gets colder and even with the temperature in the mid-fifties, the heat lamps were on. There was were two boards on the arena wall set there for their youth tournaments, named appropriately, "The Shiver".

It was a scrimmage between the Crow River and Orono Peewee A's, but it was a controlled scrimmage. Both teams were on the ice ready to play, but the first fifteen minutes was a practice session. The controlled scrimmage meant no refs, but two teens took over the referee job from one coach, they were late. The coach admonished one teen for no helmet and lent him his. But they did a good job. At one point an Orono player hustled on a potential icing an was rewarded by the teen ref calling icing off. You could see they liked hockey.

Three 15 minute stop time periods were played. I didn't stay for the third because of a prior commitment. Orono scored first and no score was posted. So the game ended with no score. The Orono team was aggressive and applied pressure in the first period. They have size and speed, but lack the mechanics. The Crow River team is smaller and has some speed at forwards. But with both coaches experimenting, the play became less disciplined as the kids tired toward the middle of the second period. It became more of an individual set of rushes from one end to the other with a lot of goals scored for both teams. The coaches were right to have this type of game to start to shake the rust. But as I left the arena, I was glad it was warm outside.

It's my third game in three days, one that I thought would be at the top of the list at a first class facility between two top peewee teams. I was disappointed. The Wayzata A's beat Edina 4-3 tonight in Plymouth.

District 3 has no Plymouth Hockey Association; there is no Plymouth High School but according to the latest census it is the sixth largest city in Minnesota, almost as large as Duluth. To the south is Wayzata, to its north is Maple Grove, to the east is Armstrong and to the west, Orono. But I suspect most of the Plymouth kids skate for Wayzata. The Plymouth facility is very nice, with three sheets of ice integrated around a single entrance. A modern concrete and glass facility, but it was cold.

The game was set up in two 12 minute stop time periods and the clock ran for the third to even out the hour. Wayzata was the home team and the game had top talent for peewee players. But the first period was a ragged affair with multiple clock stoppages and took 25 minutes off the running clock. Between clock stoppages, it was a fast game with good puck handling skills. Edina opened up the scoring in an up and down first period with the score ending 2-0, Edina on top.

Then the roof fell in for Edina. The refs killed the game by calling six consecutive penalities on Edina in sequence resulting in Edina unable to have 5 men on the ice for the next fifteen minutes of the game clock. During that time, Wayzata skated full strength.

The Edina team tried to keep the game close, but staggered especially when the Wayzata coaches started to match lines working their top line into the game against what remained of the Edina's third line. At the end of the 15 minutes, Wayzata led 4-2. With less then 8 minutes of runing time left, the Edina team, now full strength, started to mount a comeback scoring a third goal just before time ran out.

Total penalties called: Edina 9 and Wayzata 6. That would not seem bad, but it was. I have seen refs do this before under similar circumstances. These teams will do well this season and if I had to guess now I would say Wayzata is the better team. But it is a long season. I hope the Edina team gets a chance to play them on neutral ice or at home. It would be an interesting game especially if they had some of the top refs from District 6. They know how hockey is played.

Thanks for the updates. I was at the game as well and I would agree that the play was sloppy and the refs choice of calls was disappointing as well. Bad calls going both ways. Both teams pretty equal. I didn't see the Wayzata coaches shifting lines; it appeared as if it was A,B,C the whole game. So many penalties made it difficult for either team to play their natural lines the whole game. What I thought was interesting was the huge size differential between the teams. Wayzata has some big kids, maybe not as skilled at puck handling but they are big and as most Peewees prefer, they enjoy checking vs playing hockey.

I just want to add another peewee tournament for those interested. Shakopee has one going Dec 7-9. There is an A and a B tournament. The tournament fields look set with Monticello-Annandale-Maple Lake, Mankato, Sibley, Shakopee, Crow River, Albert Lea, St. Paul Johnson and St. Paul Como in the A. The B tournament has Burnsville, Shakopee, Chaska, Brooklyn Park, White Bear Lake Orange, New Prague, Woodbury and Fairbault. These B tournaments can be interesting since both B1, B and B2 teams can play. Last year I saw a B tournament where a B2 team lost a semifinal game to one of the top ranked B teams on a last minute goal.

Fred,
was this at the Woodbury tourny? The B'ville B2 team came in and gave Woodbury B1 everything it wanted. I was at that game, fun to see.

Yes it was fun, Woodbury got some significant breaks from the refs to set that goal up. In case you are curious, the Woodbury Peewee B tournament will be on Dec 6 (Thursday) through Dec 9. Their Peewee B field is set with Edina White, Rosemount, Washburn, Osseo, Woodbury White, Woodbury Blue, Peoria (Illinois) Roadrunners and Roseville.

I was sorry to see that the Burnsville team was not in it this year. This looks like a good tournament with a number of good teams playing.

I was looking forward to a good game and frankly the refs spoiled it for me. That happens. To me this game settled nothing, but I can tell you the Wayzata coach was matching lines looking for an advantage.

Is that the Jan 10-13th? I'll have to mark that on the calendar. Looks like you have a good tournament lined up. Good luck in adding some teams. Say, do they still serve the good sausages over there?

The streets in East St. Paul always seemed narrower then most. The arena I was searching for confused me when the turn on sixth dead ended. It took me five minutes to loop around and find the small street fronting the arena and turn into the arena parking lot. On the other side of the small street was Harding High School, the largest student population in St. Paul, over 2100 students.

The game was between two District 8 Peewee B teams that will be playing in the North division of the newly combined District 4 and 8, Egan Blue and Woodbury White. It was scrimmage, but held to the District 8 regular game format (15 minutes running time for the first 2 periods, and 15 minutes running in the third until the last 5 minutes which is stop time.)

The rink is older, a brick exterior but built against a hill with one side total exposed and the other side part of the hill. Inside was a concrete block building with a small warming area in the front. The rink itself was cold, I remembered that from before and the stands small, having a capacity to sit maybe 150 people. The ice seemed harder then most in the cities. I felt it through the players off because the puck slid easier then on other rinks. In one corner was a small scoreboard showing game time and score. The arena had no postings, no high school symbology. It just had bare walls.

For some reason, there was one large heat lamp behind the goal and I settled in there. These two peewee teams had fielded some of the best peewee B teams in the past few years and I expected a good game. It was except for the first goal when one goalie mistook the ref signaling icing for a penalty and skated to his bench. Icing was waived off and Eagan put the puck in the net before he could return, 1-0.

Woodbury struck back in less then 10 seconds, game was now 1-1. The remainder of the game was well played by both teams with few stoppages. The refs called a good game. There were no penalties called until half way through the second period. With few penalities and few mechanical mistakes. the team skated up and down. Eagan pulled ahead in the second period when a centering pass ended up on an Eagan players stick and he buried it, 1-2. The third period was up and down, Woodbury had a man advantage in the last 5 minute stop time period, but couldn't score. Eagan won. I liked the skill each team showed for an early season game. Both teams should do well.

But to me, the story was the arena, sitting next to a large high school, unused. It made me feel sad. There were no Harding Knights stuff on the wall, no conference banners hanging down. There was nothing, nothing maroon and gold. As I left all I could think was "go Knights".

Thank you for the info. I know I plan to be there. The teams have had a few weeks now to shake some of the rust, so I am looking forward to seeing some good games. One question, somebody told me that IGH and So. St. Paul have combined part of their programs this year. If so, does that include the peewee teams?

Last year, they combined at the "A" level but stayed separate at the "B" level. The combined teams go by the name "River Heights". Looking at the D8 website (stickstats.com), this appears to be the case again this year.

Between deer hunting and other things, I finally got back to updating some of this. I have seen the Hall of Fame tournament (Saturday), my first regularly scheduled District 6 game (Apple Valley versus Jefferson) and my first regularly scheduled District 8 game (Woodbury versus Lakeville North). All peewee A games.

I went to the Blaine Peewee B tournament last year and enjoyed a good competitive tournament. It had some atmosphere, but the HOF tournament just didn't make it for me this year. Perhaps it was too soon (before Thanksgiving), but I just couldn't get in the mood. The games were competitive and there were a number of close scores. But there were no outstanding teams. Apple Valley played shorthanded again. Coon Rapids played solid. South St Paul (or South St Paul/Inver Grove Heights) was a good surprise and Blaine won the tournament. I almost wished I hadn't bagged my deer early.

Yesterday, I saw AV beat Jefferson 4-3 in a ragged game, that had some streches of solid play. The District 6 regular season format takes one hour and 15 minutes (running three 14 minute stop time periods). That game had more excitement then the whole HOF tournament. The Hayes arena was fairly well packed with cheering fans and parents. The game was not smooth. Jefferson came out strong jumping to a 3-1 lead. Clearly they wanted to win and showed it. Except for some strong individual play by some AV players, particularly the goalie in the closing minutes, Jefferson would have won.

Tonight I saw Woodbury "bury" a good Lakeville North team 8-1. The District 8 format for peewee A games is still one hour (three 12 minutes stop time periods). The immediate impact to me, was it was not a game like the District 6 the night before. Lakeville's Ames Arena has two rinks and initially opened in 1993 with one Olympic sized rink. The permanent stands were added later and the combination of rink size and stands to me always made the sight lines awkward. They have added a third sheet this year, but I haven't been there.

Lakeville kept it close for the first period and Woodbury blew the game open in the second. Woodbury has what I call a "Mutt and Jeff" team. Their a number of kids that are either big or small, but they are all well balanced and have skills. They seem to play mostly two lines in the first period. In the second, a third line was added and came out skating well. The line combinations in the second just dominated Lakeville. Third period started with Woodbury up 7-1 with the game clock on running time. The third period play was ragged, but the game was long since over.

It's too early in the season to tell how the Woodbury kids will perform over the year. Between the flu bug, accidents and holiday plans a lot happens to these 11 and 12 year olds. I hate to put the wammy on the Woodbury coach, but as of right now, his team is the best I have seen and I have seen most of the top ranked A teams. I hope he can bottle what his kids did tonight and use it for the rest of the season.

Hopkins peewee A games are at Minnetonka's rink
the normal eight team draw is
Thunder Bay-Orono, Mpls Park-Rogers, Hopkins-Monticello, Forest Lake-Prior Lake

These 5 tournaments are the interesting ones on the Thanksgiving weekend. I have included links to each tournament so that those interested can find game times.

Hopkins has Thunder Bay. Thunder Bay played last year in the Peewee B tournament at Schwans, this year they are in the Hopkins Peewee A. It could be a different team or this year they are stronger. In this tournament there are 6 districts represented.

Mankato has District 4, District 6, Iowa, South Dakota, and District 8 teams. They also have a Bantam A tournament going. Whats funky about Mankato is the arena is somehow integrated into the college's hockey facilities.

The Moundsview/Schawns tournament has an Iowa team also and has attracted Superior, a Wisconsin association that has had some good teams. They have District 2, District 10, District 15 and District 1.

The Burnsville tournament has drawn 12 teams with seven from the metro south (north Dakota County) Burnsville, Lakeville, School District 196 (Rosemount/AV/Eastview). These are a mix of District 6 and 8 teams. The result is 4 District 8 teams and 4 District 6 (Minnetonka returns). Added to that are three District 10 teams and one District 2 team (Roseville). This tournament really gives one a chance to compare Districts 6, 8 and 10. Roseville is a wild card.

The Eden Prairie tournament has a very interesting White Pool with Edina, Eagan, Cloquet and Blaine. Blaine is playing well after winning the HOF tournament last weekend. Somebody told me that Cloquet just picked their team in the past few weeks, if so they will be at a disadvantage even though they are supposed to be talented. Of course, Eagan and Edina are tough. The Red pool looks tough also with a good balance of teams, but Wayzata should walk over all the other teams in the Black pool.

Blaine did NOT win the HOF Tourney - Champlin Park beat them the the Championship game. I THINK the score was 4-2 (but not 100% sure of the score).

The afternoon, I decided I had to see Woodbury play again, to see if they were as strong as the last time. They had a D8 game scheduled at Beilenberg Arena, normally a half hour drive. So I left an hour early and was glad I did. The 494 exit going west out of So St Paul used to be Bailey, but with all the construction on the new 494 bridge, that was eliminated long ago and Maxwell is the replacement exit. It was not complicated last year, this year it is, I got to see most of Newport as the "new" detour snaked me north under 494 and back over 494 to Bailey road. But the real surprise came when I hit the junction of Bailey and Woodlane.

A second detour took me on a merry chase south on Woodlane to Military to Keats to Dale to Mile and finally entering the east side of the arena. The detour marked the direction to the arena at every junction except one key one, Keats. I was lucky I made the right choice. I asked a mom how long had the arena been cut off, she promptly named the seasons, soccer and football and pointed out it was supposed to be opened last month.

The Woodbury team that showed up struggled against a solid Cottage Grove team in the first period. The period ended with the score 1-0. The second period was all Woodbury as they scored in multiple ways. The second period ended 5-0. It could have been 10-0 if the Cottage Grove goalie hadn't made some tough, point blank, saves. Thinking of the detour and wanting to be somewhere a half hour after the game ended, I didn't stay for the third period. One mother said take the west exit from the arena. I did. Ignoring the detour signs, I was back at 494 in five minutes. I could have stayed to see the final period, but Woodbury had already put Cottege Grove on running time. Outcome was not likely to change. My impression of Woodbury hadn't changed.

I have been going to the Burnsville Thanksgiving Tournament for past 20 plus years. In my opinion, it has been one of the most entertaining and best run tournaments over the years.

Edina and Jefferson have similar tournaments, but after the Christmas holiday. The Moundsview/Super Rink Turkey Day Tournament is good. For the Super Rink, the organizers set up eight tourneys and bring in all of Moundsview and Tartan A and B (bantam, peewee and squirt) teams to play in their own tourney. This year, one can see 8 Tartan teams and 7 Moundsview teams. With eight tourneys playing, it makes the Super Rink tourney a lot of hockey.

The Burnsville tourney is for A level teams only (bantam, peewee, and squirt). Their A teams participate. Burnsville Rink 1 is a good arena for high school/youth hockey. It seats enough people to host a packed high school game, yet is small enough to not be a canyon for a youth games. It offers good sight lines at differing elevations. The majority of the crowd sits behind either bench, something most other arenas don't offer. This normally determines the sitting arrangements for any youth game, but raises the angst of visiting high school coaches.

The Burnsville tournament reflects some organization and thought at the tourney level. It draws teams from the Northern Dakota County area and pits them against teams outside the D6 and D8. Since the arena is not large and with all three A level youth teams playing in the tournament, the result is all the Burnsville players are rooting for each other, especially when playing rivals like Apple Valley, Lakeville and Rosemount.

The format is pool play and results in teams playing 4 or 5 games. Add to that, they use a “silver stick” point system for determining trophy game seeds in the peewee and bantam tournments (13 points max per game). All the peewees games are 12 minute stop time periods. The ice is cleaned every two periods and the games between Rink 1 and Rink 2 are staggered. The result is when the ice is being cleaned on one rink, fans move over to the next rink to watch the action. That is a very short walk (less then a minute).

What has become a tradition as part of the tourney, the peewee A and bantam A teams for Burnsville play the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving. There are two games at each level. Last night Apple Valley peewee and bantam teams played in the other two games. Burnsville peewees beat Rosemount 4-2 and Apple Valley peewees beat Lakeville North in a tight game 2-1. The Burnsville game was a little ragged at times, but entertaining. The Apple Valley game was an up and down affair that went down to the wire. Both teams had their chances, both teams came ready to play.

Finally the Apple Valley team wasn't playing short so that could make the tournament interesting. Both Burnsville and Apple Valley Bantams won also. It's early, but the first day "bragging rights" goes to D6 over D8. But there is more action to come with Eastview, Hastings, Lakeville South and Minnetonka yet to appear; nor has the contingent from D10 (Cambridge-Isanti, Anoka, and Champlin Park) played. Anoka is currently on top of the D10 standings. C-I lost to Coon Rapids 2-0 and Champlin Park won the HOF, if my memory (corrected) serves me right. Minnetonka is defending their title from last year and has beaten Burnsville and Jefferson in D6 play.
