Nov 9-10: St. Cloud State @ Michigan Tech
This weekend the St. Cloud State University Huskies will travel to Houghton, Michigan to face off against the Michigan Tech University Huskies in a tough WCHA match-up. Michigan Tech currently sits alone atop of the WCHA Standings with 8 points while St. Cloud State has accumulated 3 points so far in WCHA play. Overall Michigan Tech has a 5-3-0 record while St. Cloud State is 4-2-2 overall. Last weekend, St. Cloud State played host to the University of Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves and took 3 out of 4 points by winning and tying in two games while Michigan Tech played to a series split with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Badgers at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin.

Roe hasn't exactly faced a murderer's row of opponents either. SCSU has had a rather soft schedule to this point. Before this weekend, he had played against Canisius, Bemidji State, UMD, and Alaska-Anchorage... which are not exactly top flight WCHA/NCAA teams during most years. Not to mention, most of those games were on home ice. He'll need to prove himself against top flight competition in his own right.HSHockeyFan08 wrote:Roe might be the best freshmen in the country. Turris might have the edge as of now, but he needs to prove himself in conference play.

He has been very successful on the power play against soft competition but he had better learn how to play 5x5 hockey more effectively. He only has three points when his team is even strength. That's not very good given the competition he has played has not been very good.HSHockeyFan08 wrote:Roe with 4 points on the weekend while being on the road. He is definately up there.

Gopher Blog, how many times have you seen Roe play live this year? He's a stud 5 on 5, 5 on 4, it doesn't matter. I think you're doing a little aimless gum-flapping.
Eight out of the ten teams in the WCHA are ranked in the top 20 and the other two both received votes to be in the top 20. He's got something like 9 points in 6 WCHA games. That's really good, no matter if you're playing Anchorage or UND, power play or even-strength.

A couple of times this season.George Blanda wrote:Gopher Blog, how many times have you seen Roe play live this year? He's a stud 5 on 5, 5 on 4, it doesn't matter. I think you're doing a little aimless gum-flapping.
Even if I hadn't seen him that much, it doesn't take a genius to figure out he is really only doing damage on the PP. Stats don't lie in this case. If you have a problem with that fact being pointed out, maybe you should get on him to be more effective 5 x 5.

BTW, If you think SCSU has played a tough (or even a slightly tough) schedule to this point, I would question how closely you follow college hockey.

Two years ago when he was an all American, Potulny scored 21 of his 38 goals in non power play situations. He was effective well beyond the PP unit. Your example missed the mark badly.HSHockeyFan08 wrote:Hey, a point is a point. Even if he is scores most of his goals on the powerplay, so did a Gopher a few years back. Ryan Potulny anyone?

21/38= 55% of Potulny's goals were 5x5. I bet his overall points were similar.HSHockeyFan08 wrote:Ryan scored over 50% of his goals on the power play, as has Roe(about 70%). I believe the percentages (only about a 15% difference) will be closer by the end of the year. Roe has a knack for finding the back of the net.
As I pointed out with Roe, only 3 points out of 17 have come 5x5. I credit him for his good play on the power play but let's not overstate what he has done as an overall player.

I'll take my goals if they're coming on the power-play...as long as I'm getting goals.
and to respond to Gopher Blog saying I don't follow college hockey. Admittedly, I know the Huskies haven't play the historcally creme de la creme in WCHA play. But, this year many people think that MTU is good (according to the polls).
Roe only scores on the power-play against bad teams. He only scores using Easton sticks. Until he proves that he can score with an RBK, he's bad and has to prove himself.
Kyle Okposo has 100% of his points against RPI and Minnesota State. Until he gets some points against top WCHA teams, he's a plug.
