Adolph Rupp
edit...
Vince Lombardi also said it, who said it 1st I have no idea.
Vince got it from me.
Mr. Rupp maybe took it from him, but I never met the guy. :D
Wow! elliott that is old
Well Rupp was about 12 yrs Vince's senior, being born in 1901, and since Vince got it from you, that either makes you almost a fossil, or a real smart axe kid in your day

playing a short bench on a consistant bases throughout the season shows a lack in a coaches ability to develop his players and team.
this is the fastest way to drive a negative wedge into the team as a whole.
I certainly understand there are times to go with the players that are producing; or sitting players that not mentally or physically into that game
or for whatever reason or reasons the coach sees that this may help kick them in the ass a little.
so far my experiance with this has shown that the coaches that don't have the ability to develop use this a cruch instead of a tool; and the solid coaches use as a tool and it is effective.
I have seen many games where a 1st line player was having a bad game
and the 2nd line player looked like a stud; the 2nd line player sits automatically and the first line player doesn't perform but still never misses a shift; I could go on with many examples of this but you probably get my point.
I am not against playing a short bench in critical situations, but I think the players should earn a spot on the pine vs rewarding hard work with a set of palm palms.

what really gets me is my kid is on the b honoroll. why does the next kid get A's on his report card? its just not fair. all the kids should get A's just because another kid is smarter or hits the books harder than my kid shouldnt mean he gets better grades.

Those kids that work harder in practice, skate outdoors, shoot pucks and get better should have some reward.

What is that?
First line, more power play/penalty kill opportunities, on the ice at the end of the game to win/no lose the game for the benefit of the whole team???

Sure, but those things need to be predefined by the coach, for the players, parents and his own sake.

If you as the coach are making a decision on when to use/not use players based on 'its a close game' then you (the coach) have not put enough effort into 'how to be a good game coach'.

Hockey is a fast game that changes quickly (as stated earlier by another fine poster - it is an entity of its own (paraphrased)).
Having pre-defined situations helps you as a coach (the current situations may dictate changes (injured player, penalties, how well a player is doing today)).

And I think that is pretty much what everyone is saying.

the next step we take in the "development of the kids" in my opinion is to eliminate the score board. its really not fair if one team gets 5 goals and the other team only gets one. kids are crying in the dressing room after the game and its really not nice or developing the children. thats something to be brought up at the next hockey meeting elliot.. lol ive said this befor hockey in minnesota "the state of hockey" is tuff. if fun is all you want and equal time for all join basketball, football,or wrestling. the attitude in this state is way more laid back in those sports where its not all about the 'W'....

I coach baseball (traveling) in Bemidji. Our first rule is we play to win.

When I was invloved with the elite league (Project Prep) before that; I told the players are number one player development concern was to teach them how to win (they were good at the game that is why they were there). But some came from programs that never won. Some came from programs that always won, and knew they were going back to that. So when they came off the ice laughing after getting spanked and not giving enough team effort; the old fat guy was going to give them HELL. And I hope they learned that when they play a (serious) game, you play to win.

But rule #18 is HAVE FUN!

"Shorting" is not correct. It is "shortening". You should have caught that just by looking at that word and occasionally reading a book or two. It just looks retarted.
Countrygentleman,

Could you please proof read the USA Hockey Rules on this topic. I can pay via (by, buy, bye, bi) credit card on Pay Pal if it is OK with you. I am just curious to know what your interpretation of immediately is. Do you think it would be OK if they put the benches in place by say the end of the 1st period, or do they need to be there before the game starts?

Rule 109 Players’ Bench
(a) Each rink shall be provided with seats or benches for the use
of players of both teams and the accommodations provided
including benches and doors shall be uniform for both teams.
Such seats or benches shall have accommodations for at least
14 persons of each team and shall be placed immediately
alongside the ice, in the Neutral Zone, as near to the center
of the rink as possible with doors opening in the Neutral
Zone and convenient to the dressing rooms.
Each players’ bench should be 24 feet in length. The
players’ benches should be on the same side of the playing
surface opposite the penalty bench and should be separated
by a substantial distance. Where physically possible, each
players’ bench shall have two doors in the Neutral Zone and
all doors opening to the playing surface shall be constructed
so that they swing away from the ice surface.
(b) None but players in uniform and Team Officials (up to a
maximum of four) shall be permitted to occupy the bench
area so provided.
(c) There shall be no use of tobacco products or alcoholic
beverages on the players’ bench, penalty bench, timekeeping
area or on the ice by any person. A team shall be warned by
the Referee for the first offense by any player or Team
Official during a game and, thereafter, a bench minor penalty
shall be assessed for each such offense during the game.

For those of you who don't condone shortening the bench to win, does that also pertain to the games that are blowouts? If a game gets to be a double digit score (while the coach is rolling lines) is it wrong for him to play the 2nd or 3rd line more than the 1st?

All the kids should play all the time, when there's a blowout you juggle lines and have your better player keep working on feeding the other players the puck so that everyone on the team gets at least one goal during the season. You have your top forwards play defense or have them work on their backhand shot but as long as they all pay they all should play....it dosen't have to equal playing time but every kid should walk away knowing he played a game....and if one of the less skilled players should happen to get a hat trick in the game, then the coach will have given the kid something he'll remember forever rather than remembering how he sat on the bench all season.
