WOODBURY

Post by Statsman101 »

I think they should go with 2 A-Teams. 1 for Hill-Murray & 1 for the kids that will play for Woodbury H.S

They have a good PWA Team. Future always looks bright then Teams catch up to them. So I don't know if they lose kids or just peak to early.

They have Ice Issues over there and maybe they don't skate as much as other teams. I know they played home games at wakota last year for PWA games. 2 Rinks not enough to play Home games at home. They always come out winning games early and seem to fade by the end of year. I think they must feel like they are on the road all the time with travel for both Home /Away Games & Practices.

So yes I think they have a good association and just lose players to private schools. Which will happen when you have talent to choose from.

They are getting bigger every year. The new high school will force them to split but it will be ugly, everything they do gets ugly just look at their baseball program.

Bolin is doing a great job at the high school also.

There is only 1 ex Woodbury kid on Hill varsity and 1 on JV as far as I know. Cottage Grove has 1 varsity (and 1 quit) and 4 on JV (2 being freshmen)

and they also beat bloomington 3-2

No they didn't. Woodbury and White Bear haven't played this year. I have been to every WBL game. Check out the schedules/results...

Decent team at best. Christian Turner is pretty much their team. Goaltending is also solid.

This thread has lost its way as it has become a scores post and is no longer addressing the original question so I will help right the ship. It's one of the top 10 clubs relating to size in MN as of last season and as we've discussed in the past, numbers often equate to success in and of themselves. Thus they of course win more than they loose at most levels as they should just by lacing them up.
The same issues other associations have they also have including nepotism, a resistance to learning from outside sources and developing player skill sets and leadership qualities in too small a group of players each year. The result creates some lack of depth in their individual teams and ultimately hurts the high school team when the private schools take a large bite out of the few seasoned players.
You could right this same story for a boat load of clubs across the state so they are not unique. I'm sure they don't see themselves as the above and there lies some of the problem because I think most clubs struggle to look at themselves with a critical eye and some humility.
If you want to see what a club that "has" a true commitment to development throughout their ranks look at Burnsville. The Peewee level has 61 kids and last year their PW B2 team played one of Woodburys B1 teams to a 1 goal game. The significance of that is the B2 team in Burnsville was the #31 through #45 kids out of 60. Woodbury with two B1 teams and each had kids within the #16 through #45 group of the 114 peewees they had then. The reason for this is Burnsville has no choice but to develop as many kids as they can within those small numbers or D6 would eat them alive. Something to strive for as an association in the future I'd say...

Skillbuilder, I like what you said about Burnsville. It sounds like the coaches and/or the board is thinking about the future. Take an association like Roseville who only had to cut 8 kids from high school tryouts. Why they don't spend the time developing their "B" pw's and bantams I don't know. It seems like the high school coach would have a much larger pool to draw from if more kids were developed.

I am sure there are many other associations out there with the same declining numbers issues and for the life of me I don't understand why they don't cast a wider net for development. Then take an area like Roseau. They have been developing the kids at all levels for decades. It seems to work for them!

i play for woodbury's a bantam team. Yes we did beat centenial in a shootout in duluth. We later tied them. Yes we have played WBL that was for their tyouts though. That is why you cannot find it on either of the links shown in this forum. We did beat them like 9-2 or 9-4. Just thought i'd clear that up.

That sums it up.

I guess that answers the question,

Primary sources for our Youth Hockey League are needed.

Secondary sources don't cut it anymore.
