Over-working the horse
Not sure if any body really understands this anymore but, you cant really rely on 1 goaltender the entire season and be successful. I am getting slightly irritated at some of the coaches over-working their "horse" goaltender and losing them for the year/career.
Matt Climie is a perfect example, Gephardt (sp) for SCSU last year is another good example of a goaltender who plays in too many games throughout the year and eventually breaks down. Climie faced 21 shots Saturday and gave up 5 goals. This would be considered uncharecteristic of him if it were not for the overload on games last year and sophomore year.
Just wanted to put in my 2 cents...

In his soph year climie played in less than 1/2 of the Beavers games (18). That would not have overworked him.
Last year he played in a lot of games (29), but again, IMO, that would not have given cause for a porrperformance on Saturday (save pct of about 80%) but again 7 penalites (4 on WSU, I think). And they do not report total shots - just SOG. So perhaps with blocked shots, wide shots, pipes - Climie was probably pretty busy.
Beavers need more scoring and on Saturday - less penalties.
Four minors a night should be the objective and 3 or 4 goals a night.

When you have a good back up you should be using him. Climie's GAA and S% have dropped considerably over the past 3 years. Granted, he has played more, but the fashion the goals are going in is ridiculous. 5-holes and short side goals are not normally let in by starting goaltenders. If you went to most of the games at the end of last season you know what I am talking about. Orlando is plenty ready to play in some games, give the kid a chance. He has a good record and stats and has played very well so far this season and played well in the few games he played in last season.elliott70 wrote:In his soph year climie played in less than 1/2 of the Beavers games (18). Okay, now we have ther REAL debate.
Alamano is a very good goaltender.
Who should be #1?
I think it should be Climie.
How much rest does a #1 tender need?
I think 3 of 4 (4 of 6) in college is a proper ratio, prior to play-offs.
As of today, I think Climie has had about 2/3's of the games.
The dilema becomes who do you play when Climie rests?
The #2 goalie (Alamano in MHO) who is a senior or the #3 guy, the much heralded freshamn but has not looked good in his 2 (?) games.
Give teh senior a reward or go with the future? tough calls for Coach Serratore. especially when scoring is at a minimum.

Now the other argument, do you have a #1 goalie or should Climie and Alamano be considered co-starters and just rotate?
MHO is Climie is the #1 guy.
But an argument can be made for Orlando. He has good #s.
So maybe it comes down to practice. Who looks better....
Again, I think it is Climie, but I would not be afraid to go C, A, C, A rather than the C, A, D, C, D, A, C, A, C, C, C, C (not 100% sure on the rotation).

good example for last year, Freshman year handled the workload from the start of the season to the mid point like 20 straight games as a freshman. This year playing 10 games he is holding up just fine and i think he will be able to handle a little more being a sophmore and a little more experiencedMNHockeyFan1 wrote:Example Alex Stallock

Ya they gave him way to much time last year, they were all worried about is confidence going down if they don't start him the next night after a bad display the first night. And especially when they had a backup that was better than the starter sitting on the bench.warrior2132 wrote:good example for last year, Freshman year handled the workload from the start of the season to the mid point like 20 straight games as a freshman. I may be wrong but I could have sworn that Orlando was a junior due to a readshirt year. Please let me know if I am incorrect. Either way, give the kid a chance and give Climie some rest. I was not impressed with Dalton against Manitoba this last weekend either. Rebounds will get him into heavy trouble against decent or better opponents. Notice his wierd backwards curved stick?elliott70 wrote:Alamano is a very good goaltender.

I just checked it out, he is a Jr due to a redshirt year his true sophomore year.

Edit~
Wierd enough Collegehockeystats.com has him as a senior but the actual school page has him as a Jr... I will have to ask him about it on Monday.
