Look no further then the St. Thomas this year and beyond thread. Your first response, which happens to be the first one in the thread is this:

Depends. Does financial aid dry up if they get cut?

Its comments like that, which serve no purpose other than to harass people. Honestly, I have no problems with people's opinions, as long as you keep them respectful. I could go back to plenty of public vs private, or recruitment threads, but its more of the same. I don't have a persecution complex, I have facts. I don't bash teams on this forum, you do. Take that as you will, but you won't see me jumping in on GR or East threads and making immature remarks about the team or the institutions they represent. You sadly seem to get enjoyment out of it, which is kind of pathetic to be honest.

And amazingly, I'm not angry about Anders leaving, you can go ahead and search my post history and see that I actually applauded him for making a choice that was the best school/family/community/sports decision for him.

Now back to the actual topic, since you really didn't offer any "insight" of yours into the merit of formal region polls vs statewide comprehensive polls. I'm just gonna assume that you agree that statewide, functional, rankings are better than the formal, regional ones. Awesome. And you did know I was an STA fan because we have had more than a few conversations about it on the forum, and you knew I was a student/now alum.

Let's think this though instead of just rambling on about nothing.

How are holiday tournament pairings determined? Randomly.

How are Section seeding determined? Coaches.

How are State Tounament pairings determined? Top 4 seeds- coaches. Bottom 4 - random.

What does a state, metro or any other poll have to do with anything? Nothing. Who cares?

You can stop the "holier than thou" attitude now, because you're arguing about something that is completely irrelevant.

Besides - come March 8th, the only man left standing will be Johnson anyway!

Dude, that was Aug 30th. Do you really think you made such an impression on me that I'd remember you?

Its a stinking opinion on Metro teams, by probably by only one guy. Were here on a message board, giving OUR opinions from soup to nuts. If your going to rip on people for giving their opinions your going to be doing a lot of typing. Only one ranking is important and thats the one in March. Your all twisted up before anyone has played a game.

Guess I gave you too much credit, sorry Neut... Believe me, that won't happen again.

The funny part is that you're trying to lecture people on "ripping" on other people's opinions. But you can give people crap for anything, what school they go to, "recruiting", financial aid. That's all cool, and even I'll admit its funny sometimes, but its seriously every other post it just drags on, and on.

I'm not twisted up at all, you're the one who went off with the initial name calling on a board I thought was good mannered discussion of hockey. I mean how would you expect someone to react when they are called a dumbass?

Honestly, if you think the poll is so unimportant because its a "stinking opinion" then why did you even post in the first place? Was it worth "wasting your time" over?

Probably the fact that you deemed the Metro rankings "Have no credibility" because they don't include northern teams. Its ridiculous, and I called you on it.

They have no credibility in ranking the best teams in state, ergo they are useless. Who cares who the best team in the metro is? Does it prove anything? No. There is no metro tournament title, these kids playing couldn't care less who the best team in the metro is, they want to know who the best team in the state is, they aren't just playing metro area teams in the STATE tournament. Its just like my UMD analogy. UMD is the BEST team in the WCHA, if you don't include teams from Colorado. So its misleading, stupid, inaccurate, and useless.

Neut, you are so crazy about this that you don't even realize that you are arguing a point that no one has made! I'm not saying the Metro rankings are wrong for not including northern teams, I'm saying Metro (or any formal regional) rankings are stupid in general because there is NO WAY to prove them right or wrong. State rankings are the only ones who can be proven because we have a STATE tournament.

No, DUDE, read my posts, functional region rankings matter!! Conference/Section/State because they are competitive sections that can be proven. You have just managed to prove that you don't read anything I have written and are just posting mindlessly.

Conferences have games between those common opponents, and thus, you can rank who the best players are inside those competitive sections!! There is a prize to win, the conference, section, or state championship. Do you know the difference between a formal, or functional region? Or should I explain it to you?

What you don't understand is that you are arguing that Metro rankings are trying to claim something that they never tried to claim. These rankings weren't trying to have credibility in ranking the best teams in the state. They also weren't trying to say that "These rankings mean something so everyone should pay attention!" All it is, is a local newspaper attempting to rank the teams that fall under its main reader base, which would interest the readers of the area. Nothing more, nothing less.

How about the possibility of someone with no ties to H.S. hockey living in the metro who wants to see a good game. This is a way to catch a good matchup
see you at the rink!

Thank you for proving my point, they are meaningless rankings. Thanks, all I was saying is that I expected something MEANINGFUL and worthwhile in the Pioneer Press, thats all. People don't pay for meaningless information.

And good matchups of the week are printed every Tuesday or so, generally I believe. They also often will print the counties the teams are in above the heading usually to let people know where they are located. So instead of using bad, probably inaccurate rankings to plan your viewing schedule months in advance, you can sit down on Tuesday morning and decide what games to see Thurs/Sat night that week if you desire.

The only one who has a problem with it is the STA guy. They finally get what they want which is to be compared with AA teams, and then they piss and moan about it. Not that it suprises me given the history of STA posters here.

I want them to play AA hockey, period. The administration doesn't want to and it bugs nearly everyone. Considering STA would, in all likelihood, be assigned to 3AA, the section with Cretin/Woodbury/Rosemount etc. I think it would be a good competitive match.

Oh, and they were quite a few others in this thread voicing their dislike of the Pioneer Press rankings, but that's cool Neut, just put a cute smiley face at the end of your post and its all hilarious...

Check out their Metro Top 10 for 2007-2008:

PIONEER PRESS METRO POWER RANKINGS

1. Hill-Murray: The Pioneers return experience and talent from their state tournament team.

2. Edina: A state tournament run fell short last season. Can these Hornets avoid the same fate?

3. St. Thomas Academy: STA looks poised to take a run at Class A title.

4. Centennial: Solid forwards will carry Cougars' hopes.

5. Holy Angels: Payback on Stars' minds after too-early postseason exit last season.

6. Eden Prairie: The Eagles have outstanding defensemen and depth.

7. Burnsville: Thirteen returning letter-winners return from last season's upstart state tournament team.

8. Blaine: The Bengals can score, but can the goalies protect leads?

9. White Bear Lake: The Bears will be difficult to score on.

10. Benilde-St. Margaret's: Tough early-season schedule will reveal where Red Knights stand.

Evidently the staff at the Pioneer Press knew something most didn't before last season. Always interesting to see pre-season predictions and how they fared. I'd say Holy Angels and Eden Prairie were a bit over rated with Benilde underrated and where is Minnetonka on this list? Clearly a top 5 team in state last year. Granted we know the paper tends to cater to the east side crowd.

Those Pioneer Press pollsters must have been as smart as that CAP guy.

Don Riley must no longer get a vote.
