I second that - he gets to play hockey, get an awesome education, and a career if he chooses that path. I have always like the way he played and committed himself to the sport.

Question: When a player commits to Army or Navy for athletics, is he throwing away any possibility of playing professionally due to his contract he has to respect to his college and serve six years (or whatever it is) in the Army or Navy?

It never stopped David Robinson in the N.B.A. with the San Antonio Spurs.

West Point hockey

A friend on my men's team played at West Point. He is still in the military and has a good job where he trains officers on how to use something. (software, computer, simulator, whatever?)

If someone takes an appointment to one of the service academies it is a pretty good deal. Obviously a little different than an CCHA or WCHA scholarship, but it is a nice gig if you want to keep playing hockey and get a great education.

Dan Hinote also played a year for Army - he then transfered (?) i believe. That is a good queston though.

Hinote never transfered. He got drafted by Colorado after his Freshman year and left to play with Oshawa in the OHL.

Well there ya go... So what if a player goes 4 full years and graduates from a service school - what happens to any professional ambitions?

Take Navy lax for example - great lax school. If a player graduates from navy and is good enough to play professional lax (whatever that is), what happens to his military obligations?

Walter, there are cases where the military can accomodate an athlete. In the case of golfer Billy Hurley, they'd love for him to compete at a high professional (PGA Tour, Nationwide) level carrying a big bag with Navy on it.

Robinson had a desk job (too tall for subs) for two years IIRC. Several players went to Navy and eventually played in the NFL (McCallum, Staubach, more).

Air Force has a great hockey player. We'll see how it is treated when he's done. (That may have been last year.)

No, you shouldn't go to a service academy if you want to play in the NHL. That's obvious.

I believe Air force did it a while back for hockey where they decided that the player could do his years in the Air Force after his NHL career was over. I do not know if that still applies.
If you look good, you play good.
