The Blake School, host of the 2007 Bob Nelson Hockey Tournament in Hopkins, Minnesota, refused to quit despite constant pressure from visiting University School of Milwaukee and eventually defeated USM by a 3-2 score in overtime in the tournaments championship game Saturday afternoon.
University School jumped to a quick lead in the opening period. The Wildcats got the puck deep into the Blake zone and moved it around. Senior defenseman Patrick McMinn intercepted a Blake clearing attempt, stepped in, and gunned a shot between the legs of Blakes senior goalie Patrick Johnson for an unassisted goal at 2:15 of the period.
USM sent Blake stumbling back on its heels with another goal just a minute and seven seconds later. In the USM zone, senior defenseman Jack Wigdale got control of the puck in the right corner and spotted sophomore Alex Tesensky racing like a leopard with its tail on fire into center ice. Wigdale lined a pass, sending Tesensky in on a breakaway. As he entered the Blake slot, Tesensky made a quick head fake and then fired the puck over Johnsons shoulder.
USM kept the pressure on Blake throughout the remainder of the first period and all of the second period, but despite out-shooting Blake 23-16 in those two periods, the Wildcats were unable to put another shot into Blakes net.
As the third period began Blake finally showed why it is one of the top-ranked teams in hockey rich Minnesota. Just 47 seconds into the period, sophomore Kasey Boyd disrupted a USM clearing play in the USM corner and wheeled the puck out to his senior brother Kyle Boyd. The elder Boyd snapped a low shot in from a sharp angle.
The teams moved the play up and down the ice, but it was clear that the Bears were smelling blood. They skated their two top lines almost exclusively and eventually struck again.
During a face-off in the right circle of the USM zone, senior Bobby Graiziger got the puck to Kasey Boyd who knocked the puck into the crease and his brother Kyle jammed it under USMs netminder Jeff Dye at 7:36.
The score stayed even and both teams played hard and had chances to end it in regulation, but he clock wore down and the game went to sudden death overtime.
In overtime Blake quickly got the puck into the USM end and forechecked like hungry grizzlies in a swirling salmon stream. Senior Jack Birkholz knocked a USM defender off the puck and sent it into the crease. His classmate Jordan Seivold deftly tipped it back out into the right circle onto the stick of junior Charlie Devries who snapped a quick shot over Dyes shoulder to culminate Blakes comeback and give the Bears the tourney trophy.
During the close game Johnson made 22 saves and Dye made 28.
The loss sent USM back to Wisconsin with a 1-1 record, but with a wealth of hockey experience. USM plans to invest their gains in their next game against Monona Gove 7:00 Tuesday in USMs home opener.
