Woodbury - Bright Future
Watched the Woodbury - Stillwater game last night and although Stillwater won 3-0 Woodbury looked very good actually carrying the game in the first 10 minutes. They have also played Forest Lake and Hastings to very close games.
Despite player losses including leading scorer senior Lacher who quit hockey, Joyce another senior to a broken collarbone, sophmore Lundberg to Thoroughbreds and junior Mathews to performing arts they have been competing well. To counter they are playing a very young group of 8-9-10 graders Jacobsen, Shaw, Greely, Weller, Moris......who are carrying the team and looking very good for the future.
Klatt continues to do what she has done for the prior 4 years in goal giving them a chance to win any game.

I guess I will have to respectfully disagree that woodbury was carrying the game the first 10 minutes. They did have a 5 on 3 very early in the game and that was the only pressure they had all game. When playing 5 on 5 Stillwater was clearly the dominant team. Woodbury only had 7 shots on the stillwater goalie the whole game. Klatt is what kept the score relatively close. She made some outstanding saves. Where is she going next year? If you look at Stillwaters roster for varsity they are also a pretty young team with some nice young talent on their JV.
I understand Klatt is going to Gustavus next year.
Don't disagree Stillwater is a stronger Varsity and JV and many of thier players would be feature players on other teams. They will have a strong program for the next 5 years plus. They have a HS and youth program others covet and will try to model.
My point was more Woodbury has lost a lot of players but played well with the young group that was on the ice. In the first 10 minutes Stillwater mounted little attack and the play was in the Stillwater end not in the Woodbury end where it was the rest of the game - the goalie made the needed saves for Stillwater but was not really tested with any of the 7 saves. The Stillwater top line which is very good, scored all three goals and produced most of the offense all night.

I agree with JoeHockey. sure there are a couple of bright spots on Woodbury, but bright future would be a reach. Stillwater was dominant Varisty and JV. Next year could be decent for Woodbury, but after the current JR's leave there does't seem to be a very large talent pool coming up and no evident replacement for Klatt.
Good points on Eastridge in fall 2009! The senior loss of Klatt will hurt not a lot of juniors played big role in the Friday night game the bright spots were 8-9-10 class players. It does throw a big question mark into the future not sure Park Cottage Grove or Woodbury can survive a split and dilution and be strong and competitive? It would be a shame if some of the top 8th grade kids leave before 9th grade
Roseville scored first then Alexa Jacobsen scored on a rush to tie 1-1 near the end of second. Jacobsen had another rush at 10:42 of third and was pulled down Emily Moris picked up loose puck and scored to put Woodbury on top 2-1. Woodbury gave up a rush shortly there after to tie 2-2. Roseville really poured on the coals but Klatt was very strong in goal. The last three minutes and in overtime Woodbury paniced a bit and started throwing puck around. Roseville stayed calm and kept the pressure on scoring off a tip in front from the point.
Woodbury showed good speed last night against a fast Roseville team. As a young team they need to get comfortable working in the offensive zone to often they just try to get a shot off a rush. If they find their PP they could be very good - last night they did to much 1 trying to beat 4 on the PP. If they continue to work on team hockey they might surprise some people come playoffs. Maggie Joyce sr. and Carissa Miller jr. were out of the game last night but due back for their next game.
Roseville is very balanced but there is no one threat like with Cody last year.

Haven't seen anything posted on this thread for quite sometime? Woodbury does have some nice young talent coming up and looked to have a pretty decent start on the year. Kind of wondered what went wrong, was at a game and seen they had a (new face) a female assistant varsity coach on the bench. That answered my question, every team she gets involved with goes right in the tank. Woodbury; good luck on the remainder of the season you have a bunch of good kids.

Why would you utilize this forum to criticize others? Sham on you!!
Also, before you make such a bold statement as "every team she gets involved with goes right in the tank", you should have some better facts. As far as I know, I think the person you are referring to has had some pretty successful teams. There are also girl's who really enjoy playing for her.

I think people who have watched or played the Woodbury team this year would agree they are very young and much better than a year ago.
When you consider Woodbury's changing line up they have had a great year - they took Roseville to OT and lost the second time 2-0 on a late goal and they just played WB tough. For this year they lost a senior (she quit hockey) who was their leading scorer, another top senior has been out all year with a broken collar bone from soccer, a top sophmore left to play Thoroughbreds and a junior left to do theater that would be a big loss for any HS team.
The Woodbury coaching may be the best it has ever been and standards have been raised - two seniors were asked to leave the team last week when they wouldn't get ready for a big game with Roseville and bad mouthed the team and coaches to another senior captain. This is the type of expectations and actions that needed to be taken - in years past but were not. Coach Shock appears to be very committed to improving this program and he has a supportive group of coaches, parents and players now to move forward with.
I like this forum when it is positive. The asst coach you are talking about helped the current AA state champions and many of their top players as they developed in youth hockey - she did this as a volunteer non-parent coach see is also involved with one of the top summer teams The Blades made up of '93's (last year they skated as the U14 Ice Cats). Anyone who coaches has those who support them and others who don't like them. This is especially true of coaches who push kids to get better not just do whatever they want. Girl's hockey needs a lot more women who have played college hockey and want to help girls play at the next level. Coaches like this need support - let the schools deal with their contribution and effectiveness.

Joehockey- very well said! I love reading this forum when it is postive because it brings more insight to the game! When people being their sour grapes to the board all it does is hurt the growth of the game. If you have/had a problem with this coach maybe you should let it go. If they are in your association/high school that is what the AD is for. Not a fan forum.

Every team in the tank huh? Really….. If it’s the gal I’m thinking of….and don’t quote me…but didn’t she lead a U12 A team to 3rd place finish at the State Tournament…..and didn’t she also guide the 93 East Selects team to a tournament championship? Startsinthenets, maybe this issue you have should endinthenets.

haha nice to see some support for the coach. Ms.Katz coached my daughter before. I have talked with her about situations in the past and she will be the first to admit that mistakes were made when she was a young coach right out of school.
Also all three of her teams that i know of from Stillwater were successful. U14"A" went to state her first, U12 "A" won 3 or 4 tournametns and had an off day at state took 3rd place. I am from neighboring association and I can tell you that U12 team was the best in the state that year. U14 team last year overacheived, she was the assistant coach . Our team beat them handily in the beginning of the year only to squeak by in the regionals.
I ran into her at the rink a couple of weeks ago and asked her about woodbury. She had nothing but postive things to say about Woodbury and the future. She loves the kids there and likes to see the hard work they put forth that doesn't always equal wins. She also said the head coach there is underrated and does a great job.
So lets keep the board positive and talk about he Bright future of these kids and not their coaches....

Joehockey- I wasn't aware you were in the locker room when this all happened, considering I'm one of those seniors. You don't know what happened before that game. I was not asked to leave and I didn't bad mouth anyone.. And as far as I'm concerned it isn't any of your business anyways.two seniors were asked to leave the team last week when they wouldn't get ready for a big game with Roseville and bad mouthed the team and coaches to another senior captain. I don't know what happened in this case, but I don't understand how woodbury dosen't have a very competitive team with the gajillian girls they seem to have in their youth programs....are the kids not developing at the youth levels or are they not continuing to develop through high school...and thank you for your input wghcky12 so often we hear things from people and we don't know what to believe, you showed how an outsider, who wasn't in the locker room can distort the facts.wghcky12 wrote:Joehockey- I wasn't aware you were in the locker room when this all happened, considering I'm one of those seniors. Emily Klatt
We played Woodbury last week and I had a chance to speak with Emily's father before the game. Emily wants to go somewhere where she knows she can play and still has a great program. Gustavus seems to fit that pretty well. Not to say that she couldn't play with the D1s if given the chance. Great family, great kid and we wish her the best! Good Luck Emily.[/list]
You are right I wasn't there. Sorry if what was repeated was wrong. I understand you and the other senior are not playing anymore lets leave it at that. Best of luck to both of you in the future you are both talented people.wghcky12 wrote:Joehockey- I wasn't aware you were in the locker room when this all happened, considering I'm one of those seniors. Woodbury has a limited number of girls playing hockey, many playing soccer and basketball. The current class usually only had one girls team and the '09 girls were the first to play at the U12 A level though some girl played boys A. Woodbury has lost girls through open enrollment or to private schools - if all stayed in Woodbury it would be a very good team. At least 13 kids live in Woodbury but are not playing at Woodbury HS.finance_gal wrote:I don't know what happened in this case, but I don't understand how woodbury dosen't have a very competitive team with the gajillian girls they seem to have in their youth programs....are the kids not developing at the youth levels or are they not continuing to develop through high school...and thank you for your input wghcky12 so often we hear things from people and we don't know what to believe, you showed how an outsider, who wasn't in the locker room can distort the facts.wghcky12 wrote:Joehockey- I wasn't aware you were in the locker room when this all happened, considering I'm one of those seniors. At Holy Angels Romatowski '09
At Stillwater Tuuri '10; Philipcek '11
At Hill Gallagher '08; Knadjec, Herron '09; Pendleton, Kozlowski '10; Zapeda, Fabian '12 (McKeever '11 is a Bantam A goalie in Woodbury going to Hill)
At NSP Strom '08
With the Thoroughbreds Lundberg '10
Woodbury has developed some good players but is only beginning to add the numbers that Stillwater, Roseville, White Bear, Edina and others have. There are a committed group of coaches and parents so the future will get better as far as quality and quantity of players.
WBL played Woodbury last week and I will say for a young team they seemed well coached, never gave up and kept it close. My daughter has played with Jacobsen and Shaw and both are strong players and great for Woodbury's future, as they are 10th and 8th graders.
My daughter played with one of the seniors who left the team and maybe her soccer future combined with a struggling team had something to do with her decision. My daughter liked her very much and was surprised not to see her at the game.
I talk to so many parents from all over including teams with outstanding records and I would say less than 10% like their current coach. Coaches have earned the right to coach the way the feel is best and if parents don't like it they should either apply for the job or be supportive and hope for the best.
The time to complain (if any) is after the season and not in a forum.

Lets nip this misconception that Roseville has numbers right now. If they are so big, why are they a co-op U14? Roseville is struggling for numbers. They only wish they had the numbers of the other programs...including Woodbury.
