Rochester Century

What is happening there. The opposition has scored 58 goals and they have scored 1 and that was against BESTE. I believe they have a combined total of shots on goal in the amount of 9 of all their games. Anybody?

They are a new program. This is their 2nd (?) year playing solo. They can't be expected to be competitive for a few years yet.

CoachK,

Since the rest of the Big 9 could not stop Mayo/Lourdes, they banned AA/AA co-ops. The ADs broke up the Mayo/Lourdes AA/A co-op to help JM field a team. This had zero effect on Mayo but had a huge impact on Century, JM and Lourdes girls. Century was expected to just drop hockey by every one including their own AD. The girls crapped in Kuisle's bed by recruiting "anybody" to play and now they have the largest squad in Rochester. I'm sure that Kuisle had expected to shift that pool of money to either the boys hockey team or to lacrosse. Unfortunately for the Century girls much of their team has 14 months of hockey experience. Some of their "experienced" players were cut from 12UB or played peewee house hockey last year. At least 2 of the girls just started this summer in Mac's summer hockey but they are several years from being able to compete. This is a good group of kids that have a lot of heart and with community support and coaching they will become respectable. There are 3-4 girls on the 14UA team that will help them next year and there are some very good 10U and 12U girls that will go to Century.

The Lourdes girls will continue to be flip-flopped around to fill one of the public H/S teams. Thats gotta be a crummy deal. JM is also reduced to playing kids that should be on 14U or 12U. Mayo has solid numbers in each class through at least the 4th grade. What a secret! -- start 'em young.

Rochester should have told the Big 9 to pack sand and played independent schedules with the co-op teams they had. Heck, why not go with a "Rochester Metro" and then there would be a JV team. The Austin, AL and Mankato West teams would have loved it if Rochester opted out of the conference because they could all pad their stats against Waseca, Mankato East and Luverne. Meanwhile Mayo is still playing Lakeville N, Lakeville S, North Metro, Blake etc but JM and Century is left playing Big 9 teams with a few other nonconference games. When it comes down to it, winning your conference is somewhat meaningless compared to trying to win your section.

Thanks for the reply, Macs a good guy, his Dad coached my daughter when she played for Mayo. By the way I was the first Girls coach and Commissionor of RYHA Girls hockey back in 1995-96 with Jim Buske.

Blah, blah, blah, blah. Somebody change his diaper. It is the big conspiracy theory that everyone is against Mayo. The obvious eye knew the split up would have no effect on the mayo dynasty team. If I had the time I would disect that entire post full of jr high gossip. Believe me, nobody had any concern with your issues.

Trying to stay positive; it is great that more girls in the Rochester area have the opportunity to play high school hockey now. It is great that the century girls had enough ambition, and love for the great game of hockey, that they recruited more kids to play it. It is sad that the great community of Rochester failed to recruit these kids when they were young. In the future, Rochester will have 3 great girls high school hockey teams due to the previous decision. The decision forced RYH to realize they could do a better job at recruiting girls and for the last 2 years, they have.

Disect away Falcon. That's why the forum is here. The challenge that Faribault will face is that Salmonson seems to be their main coach and now that he is with their H/S team it will start to leave their girls youth teams leaderless. He was the only one with the guts to play A hockey instead of sandbagging in District 4 B hockey. Change my diaper? That's funny, sometimes I feel like I'm almost old enough for Depends though. You are probably correct that it is good that all of the additional girls get to play. On the other hand I bet Bakke and Maidl are getting an ulcer due to frustration.

The 3 main girls program guys in RYHA have been recruiting like crazy and have increased the program from 3 teams to 8. Quantity doesn't always equal quality but it is the best place to start. About the time RYHA has a solid number of girls then the 4th high school will be opened and it will be time to start over. The high school coaches need to start digging in and helping their own school's development. There are still mostly Mayo and JM area kids in the girls youth program and JM will get most of the goalies.

CoachK, did you mean Chuck Buske? His daughter graduated from Mayo around 04 or 05.

Rocket78, Chucks the younger brother. I meant Jim, his daughter played on the 1st Mayo high school team her name is Tavanna. Me and Jim coached the 95-96 RYHA team and had girls ages 10 thru 18. We couldn't get rostered in Minnesota so we formed a league with Onalaska, Viroca, and other Wisconsin teams. It was a fun first year.

So here we go on the whole "co-op" subject again...which btw i can go on for hours about...

First off--i don't know how anyone could look at century and say "what are they thinking"...my opinion...century reminds us all why we play hockey! they step on the ice probably knowing they're not going to win, but just knowing that they're there to have fun...if they'd cut the program, you know it's not coming back b/c all the girls who'd be in the century district would transfer...these girls work there butt off each and every day to simply get a shot on net every game...i think so highly of century b/c of their reasons for playing hockey...great job coach maidl and great job century girls...

Secondly--just because it was brought up...mayo/lourdes was split up b/c of the other teams in the big 9 wanting to split up the "powerhouse"...the mshsl allows AA teams in the cities to co-op (i.e. state champs runners up last year was a AA co-op)...and yes they finally split up...but why allow those AA teams to co-op and not others...the mshsl needs to make an overall ruling that is the same throughout the entire state! if you'd want to make a "rochester metro dream team" you'd send all the girls to lourdes (which in reality not everyone would be able to afford) b/c it is open enrollment...however that is not the way to go! do i think it's sad that rochester has this problem--yes...how do you solve it...that's what we're in the process of figuring out...if you look at it, yeah we're a big city, but really now...we have very competitive basketball programs and a very competitive figure skating program...both drawing girls away from the hockey program...you can say start at the youth levels which is what we are in the process of doing...when i played youth hockey, i remember not being able to be on an all girls team until my 12 and under year...already, i've coached an all girls supermite team...really, the interest is there! now it's just patience for the girls coming up and keeping them in the program...as far as lourdes is concerned...that's another subject i could go on forever for...above all, it's simply not right to make the girls switch every 1-2 years! my solution--they stay w/ JM b/c by school size they are the smallest...century is obviously finding the girls they need and mayo also has plenty of interest...if this changes in the future...too bad...lourdes should get to stay! i'll be the first to tell you it's not an easy thing to do--switching teams...

now that i've rambled enough about what i think about the co-op situation...i'd like to finish by saying i'm very proud of the century hockey team! they teach so many people so many great lessons about the game of hockey!

iPuck, I'm not following your line here. I have never stated that MSHSL banned the co-op. I said that the Big 9 did. This was lead by Owatonna and Mankato West. Everybody else was just a sheep and followed the crowd.

Neither basketball or figure skating are drawing girls from hockey as you stated. It is going the other way. Former figure skaters - Olofson, Klampe, Grinde, McCormick, Laures, Knapp, Knapp, Dison, Brakke, Durigan, Weber, Bier, Nelson, Sheers, Debolt etc. Basketball - Bjork, Macken, etc. RYHA had 1 team in 95-96 (the year H/S girls varsity started) and they have 8 teams this year. This doesn't include the girls only supermite teams (which we have had for at least 6 years) and the girls in termites. This growth is due to the efforts of 3 girls coaches and NOT RYHA as a group. I hope the next wave of coaches has the same passion.

I too think highly of the Century girls and their coaches. They are losing players though. I heard Bjerke has quit and she has their only goal. I think that some others will step up.

Yeah, I forgot about Jim. Katie Buske did a lot with the girls youth teams so I was thinking about her and her dad. I remember Jim and they have another brother Tom too.

CK, You'll like this growth:
1- 14UA
1- 12UA
1- 12UB
1- 10UB
4- City League rec teams

Its not like soccer yet but its gaining ground.

Co-op

Post by Betty 99 »

School Enrollment
AL 1096
Austin 973
Faribo 1075
East 872
West 1099
Owatonna 1528
Century 1676
Mayo 1628
JM 1366
Winona 1857

You mean a district with 4670 students cannot field three teams? That doesn't even include Lourdes enrollment.

After East and West went to the State Tournament in year 3 of a program the Big 9 ADs (lead by Rochester and Owatonna) screamed clear and loud about the Co-op and wouldn't support it if Mankato applied with the MSHSL for another year. Rochester was given 10 years! What did they want, 15 years? 20 years? Rochester was cutting girls (and they still must by based on Rocket's comment that Century has players that were cut from the 12UB team) and then saying they didn't have the numbers.
Who's fault is it that Rochester did nothing for ten years to develop girls hockey at the youth level? Maybe it was good they were forced to split because it forced them to do something about it.

what i'm saying is that the MSHSL wouldn't get involved and said that the big 9 needs to make their own decision...and we didn't start taking girls from figure skating until this whole situation started and that's simply b/c we wanted to at least find girls who could stand on their feet...
i do think it's sad that we can't field three teams...but we are definately headed in the right direction and finally building a youth program...still we have girls dropping out before they get to high school...what we have to do is figure out why...

iP,

Who are these girls that are dropping out? What percentage of 10U girls drop out before high school? How does it compare to boys in squirts? Do you know any facts or numbers or are you just guessing? Most of the girls that I have observed get to high school and then quit due to the massive time commitment, lack of playing time or their team isn't what they wanted. I have a source that can tell me what the dropout rate is for boys and then we can compare.

Betty99, The AD at Mankato West made the decision to split from Mankato East and not the Big 9. The AD knew what they were getting of the girls in their youth program. The conference can say no to a co-op and if you are denied you can appeal to the Section and then the MSHSL but they will rarely over rule. Rochester H/S teams have never cut anybody that I'm aware of. The Youth program cuts from A to B and from B to Rec. Some of the girls that were cut off the 12UB team decided to to play H/S rather than rec. Their choice. Century has 22+ girls. JM and Mayo have 15-16. A third of the girls playing for JM and Mayo should be in 14U this year.

Rochester, St Cloud and Mankato are among the very few youth hockey associations in the state that support multiple public high schools. Virtually every other program in the state is closely aligned by their H/S boundaries. Aligning by H/S boundaries gives a sense of school spirit that is missed by programs like Rochester's. I was in the rink watching a bantam game last week and the team was announced as the Mustangs and not the Rockets, Spartans, Panthers or Eagles. The advantage to Rochester in not splitting by H/S boundary is that they are a large entity for purchasing ice, fundraising etc.

there is indeed evidence of girls dropping out...if there weren't girls dropping out we'd be able to field the teams we need...it's more in the youngest levels of hockey that they are dropping out...i know that from when i coached supermites, not all the girls are still in hockey...once they hit the fifth grade age level, they wanted to try basketball, and couldn't do both...

iP,

This is where the Rochester program has grown from. In 95-96, the first high school varsity season, virtually every girl was a former or current figure skater [stolen from figure skating?]. There were 2 H/S teams in Rochester and most of the girls were playing for the first time. It was like watching huge termites but so was the competition. The one independent youth team had over 20 girls playing and their ages were spread out all over the place (coachK 10-18?). When my kids were termites there were only 3-5 girls. When my oldest son was in supermites there were maybe 5-8 girls on the supermite teams and when my other kids were in supermites they had 2 teams that were each (half and half) girls and boys mixed. Last year Rochester had 2 girls only supermite teams and I think they do again this year. I think that is some pretty decent growth. Can you get info from Paulson on the retention rates of girls in the mite program?

Some of the girls do come back after quitting. Hartke and Kautto both quit hockey at age 8 or 9 and are now back playing in high school. Girls can and do play both hockey and basketball. The ones I know of include Macken, Nelson, Bjork, Laures, Miller. It gets harder to accomodate as they get older but so does life. Each level change is where we lose hockey players and it generally doesn't happen between the first year and second year at an age category. Supermite to Squirts usually is a drop. Squirt to Peewee is a bigger drop due to fear of checking. Peewee to bantam is another drop because the dream of playing H/S looks like it is not in the cards for some kids. At least in Rochester, the girls retention rate from age 9 to high school are much higher than the boys rate. Girls are generally more supportive of each other than boys are but there were a couple of fueds between 15UA and 15UB teams a couple of years ago that caused some girls to quit. One of my Harley friends daughters was one of them that quit.

yes Rocket78, 95-96 we had 20 players 10 thru 18. The next year we had 76 girls signup. Back then the High Schools were taking everyone, but as the years went the girls saw what dedication it took to become a relievent player. At that time we seemed to live in a bubble, and one event seemed to change alot of things. The leading scorer of all girls high school was Jenny Conzemious (sp) she had some crazy number and was on tv and in the paper alot. The people in the Premier Prep league in Blaine caught notice and invited her to play. She had a very hard time and I don't think even scored a goal during that fall season. That left a bad taste in many peoples mouth and discounted Rochester from that point on. Its taken years to recover but it sounds like moving in the right direction. But I do not agree its a good idea to seperate them at the mite level. They need to learn to be aggressive and they learn that from the boys. At least that what I have been told by players that have represented our country.

I agree the Rochester program is growing! Don't get me wrong there...right now it's all patience in waiting for those girls to move up...

as far as the bball girls are concerned...which of the girls you listed are playing both in high school...you see my concern there...

CoachK,

OK, I just put 2 and 2 together! Since you were writing about Century I had thought you were the Century boys assistant coach Klingfutz. With one of your comments about goalies and that you had daughter playing around '95 I just realized you are Kasulis. DUH! Where are you coaching now? Do you still have a pack of goalies or did they trade their pads in for regular equipment?

CoachK, I appreciate your experience with the girls and considering you are a pioneer in Roch girls hockey I say thanks to you and Buske etc. You and I disagree on the separating girls in mites though. If we don't separate them we end up with 6-10 agressive girls per age group. If we separate them we end up with 25-30 girls that maybe aren't aggressive but we have the nucleus of 2 youth teams at the 12U level. I think it is easier to teach them to be aggressive later IF we have the numbers to support our teams. I know that my daughter was ready to quit hockey but when she was on an all girls team she found a new love. She gets her share of penalties and they aren't usually ticky tack but are rather overt. I think she gets her mean streak from mom :D .

Rocket78 I am not Kasulas, he never coached but I coached 2 of his kids. His Daughter played JV for JM. My daughter was a forward with Mayo the first time they went to state. She later played for Eagan and then to UMD. My goalie Daughter played Bantam for Washburn and Eastview and then Culver Academies in Indiana. My youngest god no is not a goalie but we have very good friends whose daughter is a goalie for Century, just moved from IFalls. I am coaching squirts now. Have a great weekend.

betty 99 your a fool to believe number without race. 40% of those kids are Somalian or Mexican. There parents can't afford hockey and they don't like hockey anyway.

The Rochester girls program is growing but ice times and $'s scare good athletes to Basketball.

CK, Since you know the I-Falls goalie family I wanted to ask you why they would choose to move to Century. All 3 Rochester teams have a solid goalies. Mayo has a senior but the next 2 goalies are in 8th grade (14UA and MHS Backup). JM/L has a solid 9th grader and the backup is also in 9th grade. Century's goalie is a junior and the coach's daughter. Last time I looked, RW has gotten ZERO game time. I think Maidl does a great job of getting his girls into the game with the exception of RW. Is she hurt or something else preventing her from getting in? Several people have told me that her family was going to move to the Mayo area but I think that was just pure speculation. Any thoughts?

I think that they choose Century because of the school, I agree Mayo are would of been a better choice. Tuff spot their in with the goalies dad coaching. I don't believe shes hurt but I'll check. I know when I coached my goalie daughter I always played the one that performed best at practice.
