PS..... Byfuglien tied the Chicago record for goals in a game by a defenseman set in 1977 by Dick Redmond and matched by Doug Wilson in 1991.

Goooooooooooooo Bubba! I think the kid is gonna have a breakout year!Dexter Morgan wrote:Byfuglien is the newest version of Petteri Nummelin, Christoph Schubert or Mark Streit — all blueliners who stayed in their respective teams' lineups with a switch to forward. The difference? Byfuglien is actually scoring, to the tune of nine points in his last six games.
I still lament the fact that he didn't play on RHS varsity, though. Couldn't they have given him a personal tutor--force-fed him the books!?!
I think they tried that. But hey, he looks pretty smart now for going to Canada.5th Line Center wrote:Goooooooooooooo Bubba! now that is very interesting powerforward...i understand you are friends and all...and friendships end on the ice too...after watching the warroad/roseau gameon fox where jake was in net for warroad, i am not sure he would want to, or be welcome to play in the alumni game after that....just my thoughts, but any roseau alumn have thoughts on jake playing for warroad, and comingbackto graduate from roseau? i will say its unfortunate to play your whole career and then get to the varsity level and not have a chance to play because of better competition.[/b]

Every former player is invited to the reunion. One JV game makes you a Roseau alumni. He will be invited in 2010 and would have been even if he graduated from Warroad.PowerForward9 wrote:I have an Intresting question. Byfuglien is truly a scouting find. Here is a kid who did not play highschool or college, drafted in the 8th round(245 overall) and is currently an impact player in the NHL.
His potential is still on the rise, as he gains experience and "savy" on the ice, his game will only get better. He will be fun to watch and see where his game is at 5 years from now!
Good luck Dustin!

what a thread! I bet dustin is enjoying his rise in the nhl, leading the chi d-men in scoring and being part of the blackhawks turnaround, along with all the excitement of the new, young talent they have. I am sure he sits in his stall before each game and wonders about his chances of playing in the roseau rams alumni game.
It's good to see another MN kid doing so well...regardless of the route he took to get there.

The only reason Byfuglien was an 8th-round pick and not a 1st or 2nd-round pick, was because he was and still is FAT and out-of-shape!!!hipcheck wrote:Byfuglien is truly a scouting find. About three years ago, TSN did an in-between periods special on Dustin when he played for the Prince George Cougars. It focused on how he was so talented, but he couldn't control his weight. The video had Dustin at a McDonalds chowing down about three big macs while his coach was saying that he was one of the most talented players he's seen, but probably won't make it to the NHL unless he gets his eating under control.
It's also likely the reason that despite consistent scoring, he wasn't able to hold a consistent spot on the Blackhawks roster until after the first month of this year.
I think Savard and the Blackhawks have finally come to the conclusion that Dustin is never going to be in shape and that a fat and out-of-shape Dustin is still better than many other players.

I saw him this summer. He's not in top physical shape, but he's come a long way from the fat kid he was 3-4 years ago. He's not someone I'd call fat and out of shape anymore. I think he's figured out what it takes.zinovy08 wrote:The only reason Byfuglien was an 8th-round pick and not a 1st or 2nd-round pick, was because he was and still is FAT and out-of-shape!!!hipcheck wrote:Byfuglien is truly a scouting find. To call Dustin out of shape at this point in his life is just plain old silly like Billy. While he may never have washboard abs or win a Mr. Universe competition, He plays 18-22 minutes per game. Do you think Savard would put him out in the final minutes of a game, like he usually does, if he thought he was out of shape?zinovy08 wrote:The only reason Byfuglien was an 8th-round pick and not a 1st or 2nd-round pick, was because he was and still is FAT and out-of-shape!!!hipcheck wrote:Byfuglien is truly a scouting find. Do you really think he eats like he did as a teenager? About 6 months ago, I witnessed him order Salmon and Vegetables at a restaurant, while every one else was ordering burgers and fries.
As far as Dustin not being able to hold a roster spot in the past..... He was a 20 year old kid in his first taste of the NHL and he wasnt' scoring much. His second stint didn't go as well as he had hoped, and his play was not that of what he is capable of. Now, at the OLD age of 22, he has figured what is his job is and is establishing himself in the upper echelon of the players in his draft class.
Re: Back to Topic
The fact is....every coach and GM in the league expect players to be in top shape. It's been Dustin's achilles heel forever....coaches tell him to get in shape, it doesn't happen, and then consequences happen, such as being sent down.Lordosis wrote:To call Dustin out of shape at this point in his life is just plain old silly like Billy. I'd bet every coach he's had has been frustrated to see "what could be?" if he lost weight and gained quickness. He's having a great year, but just think how much better he would be if he were quick?
I watched Dustin play the last few years (prior to this year) and his play didn't indicate that he should be sent down. He was making plays and scored more points than most defenseman (a point every 4 games isn't bad for an NHL defenseman). The only logical conclusion was that the coaches sent him down as a consequence or conditioning purposes.
I already posted that Savard and the hawks have probably figured out that Justin never will be in tip top shape ....and they realize that an out-of-shape Dustin is still NHL-caliber and an asset to the hawks.
Also.....Savard is probably more sympathetic to Dustin than about every other coach or GM in the league. When I was a kid, Savard was one of my favorite players, but I was dissapointed to find out in the Hockey News article, that Savard would smoke cigarettes between periods as a player.
Savard came from an era where players played if they could play and that being in top physical condition didn't hold as much weight as in today's game. no pun intended.

In Rockford Dustin must have had some pre-game meals with Haviland. Havey coaches better with a full tummy.
I think it's funny that the last two kids from Roseau that played in the NHL went to Canada. Josh Olson was nothing special in high school. Perhaps the 5 or 6th best player on his team. Everyone that went on to division 1 never really panned out. Maybe going to the major junior route isn't such a bad call.
