This tourney sucks, 7 am games in PLEASE BAN ME arenas and ref's that haven't seen the new rule book on head contact. Hopefully we won't be back to defend first or second place......there way better tourney's around in historic buildings.
The $4 parking at the DECC goes to the DECC, everyone pays it whether your are from Duluth, Edina, Thuder Bay or if you were Heaven sent. It sucks but thats the breaks. You can drop your player off at the DECC and than go park for free closer to downtown and than walk the skywalk if the $4 breaks you, or you can park in the city lots for free in the canal and walk the foot bridge over to the DECC and I think but I'm not totally sure, you can park at the Park next to the DECC (where the big wooden playground is) for free and again walk across the street.
As far as the $25 dollar fee for player, that is due to a new Minnesota Hockey rule that was passed last year which allows tournaments to add their gate fee's right on to the entry fee. You probably noticed there was no one hounding you to see if you still had your ticket on Sunday? Assuming most family passes are right around that price you really didn't lose any money. What that rule does is encourage though, is grandma's and grandpa's to come out and watch games without worrying about paying an entry fee.
The 7 am games can't be avoided, there are teams at 3 different levels and that is what it takes to get the games in.
As far as where does the money go? The Spirit of Duluth has been and is organized by a group that has been putting it on for 31 years. They volunteer their time to put together a quality tournament for three levels of hockey. The money that is made goes back to Duluth Amateur Hockey by disbursing it amongst teams. The individuals who put it on make no finacial gains off the tournament.
While I agree the Spirit of Duluth used to attract a little better playing field in its glory days of the 80's and 90's, they have been working hard to make it a better tournament. I would also agree they still need to make some improvements to get the tournament up to what is generally standard practice for tournaments. Despite all of the that, these volunteers do what they do out of the goodness of their heart and to give back to youth hockey.
I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your time in Duluth, the Spirit really is a good show and they do, do their best to make it memorable for the kids. Every tourament has its quirks and at some point we have to accept them for what they are. Unfortunately, like most tournamens not everyone gets to play on Sunday even though everyone wants to. Hopefully the kids had a good time even though you did not.

Bantams
Duluth East Hockey Fan: I wasn't disappointed, just a little ticked at the $4 parking fee. Duluth is a great city, my kids would love to move there. I was under the impression that this was a privately run tourney being it's not listed as a DAHA tourney. With a registration fee of $1000+ made it look like someone was gouging us.
The tourney could give that Proctor rink some cash for new paint!

Duluth is best place for travel tourney for city teams. You'd think the hotel operators would get off their wallets and throw some money towards updating some of the arena's before poeple get tired of going to rat traps like Fyberger though....that place is ridiculous....the hotel guys need to understand where their bread is being buttered....
