Its true. I was there. Very even game. Shots were 31-28 in favor of Denfeld. Virginia was ahead 4-1 after two periods.

Yeah that's correct, I didn't want to believe it myself. It's still early but the two early "favorites" in section 5A are not looking too good these days. Hopefully Denfeld will turn it around, they have some very tough games coming up this season. As one can see via the link above Denfeld just missed tying the game late, by about two seconds to be exact, scoring just after the final buzzer.

The Hunters really have some turning around to do after one goal losses to New Prague and Virginia. Nothing against either of those teams but if they want to earn a trip to the state tournament they have some work to do. It'll start Friday with Mound Westonka and then finishing the month of December against SCC followed by Totino Grace in the first game of the Rochester Tournament.

Denfeld

I agree was at both games New praque and Virginia. The hunters have to stop playing from behind. it seems they are falling behind and trying to catch up in the third period. Last night they were 2 seconds too late ! Seems your right right both the hunters and hawks better turn it around. I think the hunters will be fine. They hit two pipe/crossbar against New Praque. A little puck luck and they would have won that one. Virginia was alot better then I thought they would be. Too there credit they pulled it out. Mound and princeton are next for the hunters at home. Lets hope for two wins.

Must have been a good game judging by the stats, not that that means anything some of these places don't have a clue about taking the shots on goal stats. Virginia has a hard working team and has been very competitive without nico, they would really be a force with him. Denfeld will be tough right to the end.

I see the Hunters played Olcott in nets again. Not that the outcome of the game was his fault, but didn't the other goalie (Skurich) post a pretty impressive shutout against Hermantown in their first game... Any insights?

I don't know about the specifics of this season, but I know in the past it has been Smalley's plan to rotate his two varsity goaltenders through the holiday tournament season...and then to pick a go to guy for the home stretch towards playoffs. This is even what he did last season before going more with Kolquist down the stretch.

Hasn't Olcott played more games though?...

Skurich is the starter for Denfeld. He's out with a bad ankle and that's why Olcott is the starter as of late. Skurich has played one game against Hermantown and he shut them out.

Not a problem, but don't get me wrong Olcott is a very capable goaltender as well. Didn't mean to take anything away from him at all.

I was at the game. Denfeld got beat by a team with major injuries. No excuses.

Someone posted on another thread that Virginia will be lucky to win four games. 3 down.

...And 2 of those 3 are in LPH's top 10 in class A this week. I think many (me included) have underestimated this team. If it weren't for a couple of bad third periods, this team could be 6-0 or 5-1. They will only get better as the season goes on as young teams do (only 3 seniors on the roster) and as a couple of key players get healthy and return to the lineup.

On another note, the Blue Devils closest rival (well, kinda) Eveleth lost to Ely last night. I don't know if I recall Ely ever beating them before as long as I've been alive. It might have happened, but I don't remember it.

If Brad Skurich was between the pipes, this game would've been a whole different story. Believe me...

I don't think it really mattered who was in the net for Denfeld, Will Lustig played great in the net and Denfeld just couldn't bury.

Olcott made some very nice saves and the goals that went in weren't what I would call softies... the goaltender wasn't the difference here.

Don't talk about missing players in this one. Virginia is without a doubt, missing their best defensemen, who has high scoring ability, in Grivette. Buccanerro, who is also out, is a presence that is missed on the ice also.
Oh yeah. Four down. I guess that's it for Virginia.
