Let's slow down here a little! Our subject here is a different view of Pee Wee A teams, not whether metro or outstate is better simply because of who we play. I personnally find frederick61's perspective fun to read and I have interjected my feelings here and there to his and other's OPINIONS of how teams stack up. I have re-read some of the posts and I can see where some might get rialled up and then I see where those replies get the others rialled up. I too have my feelings about metro vs outstate and I was very excited to go to Moorhead to see how our boys stacked up against some metro teams, it was a good measuring stick. Unfortunately some of my hopes and predictions did not come to fruition and we ended up playing a team we beat a week prior and losing and facing a D16 rival in Roseau and getting it handed to us. I think the Roseau fans would say we gave them a better game this past weekend but we lost again. Granted, some of what is getting people heated goes outside of the subject matter of this thread, but I think the topic of this thread is good. D16 is a mystery, only about half the asscociations have websites and only few of them are updated immediately after a game or weekend, it frustrates me and I'm a fan of a D16 team. Back on subject, this thread is simply handicapping the districts with current information, we are 2 months away from any tournament games and we all know how a tournament can go! Remember, we are talking about 11-12 year old boys, stuff happens.

fredric61: There is an interesting article in the Fargo Forum this week about the Roseau/Warroad rivalry and about how difficult it has been for Moorhead to establish some sort of competition with either team. When you take that idea (satisfied playing each other) and add to that the facts that Warroad plays in Roseau’s Tourney; Roseau plays in Warroad’s tourney; both play in the Bemidji tourney (where only two cities teams will play) and that’s the bulk of their tourneys for the year, one can conclude they are comfortable with the current approach.
Where in this statement, based on information from a nothern paper, say anything about hockey dieing up north? You and your fellow D16 compatriots are putting words in peoples mouths, you make assumptions that we are attacking your sacred hollowed ground. I see no attack towards the north, non what so ever!
fredric61: My point is both Warroad and Roseau are playing essentially each other and it is hard to judge how they will finish..... the weekend before I posted the ratings, Roseau played in the Moorhead tourney, opened with a 5-1 loss to Maple Grove. I thought that if Roseau was going to be a top team, they would have pushed Maple Grove. They came back to beat a good Anoka team 4-1. They then lose to Moorhead in OT 4-3 and beat East Grand Forks 4-0 for a third place finish in the Red Wing tourney.
TRF beat East Grand Forks 3-0 about a week before the Moorhead Tourney. TRF opened the season in mid-Nov with three loses to Roseau, Warroad and Duluth East most likely right after forming their team. They have now won five straight and beat Warroad 6-1 two days before Roseau beat them.
Monday, I posted the ratings Warroad, Roseau and TRF. Tuesday night Roseau beat Warroad 9-2, one day after I posted the ratings. Roseau also plays East Grand Forks again on Sunday (Warroad plays them the day before). Next Monday I will post the ratings again, but to me the next check point for Roseau and Warroad is the Bemidji tourney on the 29th and 30th.
However there is another interesting test for D16 this week end in the Grand Rapids tourney...... This looks like a great tourney and the D16 teams entered will be tested. But Roseau and Warroad will not be tested. They are not entered. They play each other.
Seems to be a pretty solid take on what is happening to me. What gets your goat is the fact that it was stated that Roseau and Warroad won't be tested because they are not in the Grand Rapids tournament, so based on this thread and what is going on currently, this is Fred's take on where Warroad and Roseau are at this point in time, not forever. No where in his entire post is he referring to hockey dieing up north, those words came from the D16 director himself. For purposes of trying to evaluate a team when you haven't been able to see them, any hockey guy takes a look at who they have played against and how those scores compare with teams they know more about and have seen play.

You taken this information and interpretted completely out of context. Not once in any of that post or this thread was it stated that Warroad or Roseau or any northern team needs to come to the cities to get good competition, you did. Not once was it stated on the post or in this thread that the norhern associations should do this or do that, you did. I am beginning to wonder if we are reading the same thing. You decided to attack the cities and the people there for some reason or another, those from up north on this thread resort to persoanl attacks when they hear something they don't like.
You did not try some twisted psychology on anyone, you got caught trying to explain a situation you clearly are not prepared to deal with and now you are back tracking and shuffling your feet and its rather entertaining to see a Minnesota Hockey director do that dance.

I re-read what I wrote. I never said you lived in Warroad or Roseau. I said that I hoped the people who lived there were more reasonable then you. I never said that Roseau should move to the cities. Watchdog'sRight said that. I said that Roseau and Warroad were content with their rivalry and I suggested they add some games outside D16.elliott70 wrote:frederick61 wrote:Elliott70 wrote “Fred's attitude has not been good. When I want to know what Lakeville S bantam B1 team is like, I call someone from Lakeville or nearby that I know. Reread what Fred wrote, then go look in the mirror. Do you get the feeling that a cidiot wrote it? Not consciously (I hope). But you wonder why watchdog feels a little angry?”
I will coin a phrase for you Elliott-“Ramidiot”. I did not respond to your comments by calling you names or arrogantly stating that the whole Twin City population is not “real Minnesotans”. I did not come up with the term “cidiot”. I did not refer to another thread with distain and say if I want to know that, I will call a friend. You are not everybody who uses this site.
You do not know all. I would hope that more reasonable people then you live in the two towns of Warroad and Roseau. If that makes my attitude “not good”, I can look in the mirror and live with that.
Inthecrease was right. You are angry. Yes, I wonder why. It is not normal.
I am not from Warroad or Roseau.
I do not claim to know everything.
I did not say you coined the term.
I did not refer to another thread.
If you want to know something why would you not call or believe someone that was telling you wha tthey know about it.
Inthecrease stated watchdog was angry, not me. I ma not angry, I am tryin to make a point to you about what you wrote. Something that was insulting.
I used a bit of twisted pshycology on you and it worked.
You said Roseau should consider playing in the TC area or their hockey may die (a slam to the north competition - even though I do not think you meant it as such). So in return, I excluded you from Minnesota. It upset you. But your comment should not upset the people from the north!!!!
Like I said, re-read what you wrote. But this time put on pair of shoes of the coach from Thief River Falls or the president of the EGF association. Tell me, how would you feel, someone saying that Roseau needed to get to the metro or your program might die? You slammed us...
watchdog fan set up a new profile just to answer you....
I know exactly what you were trying to accomplish on this particular thread... it had nothing to so with starting a rift, but trying to determine what regions may look like, but you started making assumptions and you know what happens when you do that.....
watchdog tried to tell you what D16 was like, with a Roseau slant. I tried to tell you with a mostly unbiased slant.
What I don't get is why you thought you needed to provide advise on how the Roseau (or any northern) program should operate.
Sorry, but you do not seem to understand that if you want to help with the progrqams up here, then move up here. Otherwise, only offer it if asked.
But keep the thread going because the basic premise is fine.
I expressed an opinion that if they didn't, it could affect their programs eventually and that would not be good for Minnesota Hockey. I think it is a reach to say I slammed other D16 teams. Frankly, I see those teams playing outside of D16. I don't think that slams Roseau or Warroad.
Elliott70, you came up with the statement that real Minnesotans do not need the cities and cidiots. I flattered that Watchdog has set up a new profile just to answer me. It will make the site more interesting.
I am not advising any program on how to operate. I wouldn't do that. I wouldn't even know how to do that. But perhaps I am holding up a mirror and some people don't like what they see.

Glad I can help even though I only report what I know and that is EGF. As for EGF, we are off until after Christmas when we host Grafton-Park River on the 28th, Hallock on the 29th and go to Moorhead on the 30th.

Well I'm new to this forum and I don't get involved in these types of things very often but what i'm reading here today is very disapointing this is a forum about youth hockey not personal attacks. It should not matter where you live north, south, east or west, i'm sure there's good and bad hockey everywhere. bottom line is we all live in minnesota where hockey is king, so can we get back to what matters and thats the KIDS!

All knowing Fred -
Look at the Roseau PeeWee schedule. www.roseauyouthhockey.com. They have 42 games scheduled. They play a home and home against all 7 D16 teams including Warroad. That's 14 games out of 42. It's possible they might play a D16 team in a tournament - such as playing EGF in the Moorhead tournament.

I'm with ya checkfrombehind!!! This isn't about the North vs. Metro. If,
the North is content with playing each other who cares. The city teams enjoy going up to the range knowing they are going to compete against some good competition which this is what its all about. The players don't get nothing out of beating a team by 10 goals. They become more developed and skilled at a higher level of play

"Roseau and Warroad being content playing each other" is all a creation of Fred. They are scheduled to play each other twice per year. Should we be spending twelve hours in a car each weekend in order to play metro area teams? If a town 20 minutes away has a tournament where we can play four different teams on weekend plus spend a few hours in the north rink shouldn't we participate? Our teams enjoy playing metro teams but you have to look at the time and money involved.

Watchdog, you miss my point. First, I grew up in the northwoods in a place so remote that the nearest big town was 30 miles away. I watched the Greenways, the Falls, the Eveleth dominate High School hockey in the 50's and 60's. I used to love to go the Region 7 tournament at the Eveleth Arena watch the Range teams take on the Duluth. This was before a Zamboni cleaned ice and there was no glass between the fans and the players, only the end zones were protected by chicken wire.
Those programs have fallen on hard times mostly because the mines have closed. Roseau and Warroad especially now carry that banner, they are thought of the teams from the north. I want them to compete. It is good for the state of Minnesota Hockey. Most kids down here playing on teams look forward to playing a Roseau or Warroad. These programs should not become satisfied and play local.
In the end, it could hurt them and hockey.
Hmmmm......

No, not dancing, not backtracking... just trying to get Fred on the page that he started on.

There is / was an ongoing discussion on the HS page about that game.frederick61 wrote:I agree Elliott70. Time to move on. There is some good peewee games down here this week. But I would like to switch to high school for a moment. I saw Park Rapids beat EGF 6-5 in OT. Is the PR team for real this year in Section 8A?
My thoughts are
PR has a premier player in Lehrke.
They have some players, Coborn and Winkler I believe, that are his linemates and are effective with Lehrke.
Some adequate D men - Tolle I like a lot and McMorrow, a good soph.
Not sure on the goaltenders ability, Miller, I believe.
But I think the key is Zach Knapp on the second line. He is a decent player. But teams will key on Lehrke. Knapp and the second line will need to score.
As a team, they are short numbers and upper level A quality players, so penalties will hurt, not as much in giving up goals but wearing out teh key players.
And coaching will need to be on top of when/how to get time out of the third line.
A plus is an easier schedule that allows the third line to develop without a lot of pressure to win.
Of course, HS hockey is geared to the play-offs and seeding is based to a degree on SOS (strength of schedule), so that may hurt them.
I can see them gaining the finals again, because of Lehrke. Very good individually, but also as a team player. I can't see them beating Warroad.
In the EGF game, their #1 goalie and arguably the best in section 8, did not play for a team rule infraction. Also, 4 or 5 other players were out for a variety of reasons.
PR had one player out and lost a first-liner on a DQ sometime in the second.
??? Would there be a different outcome? Soesn't matter for that game - PR proved to be better. If EGF is at full strength, I believe they beat PR, but only time may give us the answer (and the proper seeding come sections).

12/24/07 Merry Christmas!
The following summarizes the District by top teams and what they have done in the last week and what they will be doing this week. I have group the Districts into Regions they will be playing to go to state. I have added a ranking of the top teams in each region at the end of this to get to the potential state entries.
North Region (at Cloquet Feb 29 to March 2)
D10 Summary: There are 12 teams in the league playing a 22 game league schedule. The league champion advances to the North Region automatically, leaving the remaining teams playing for one seed. At this point, Coon Rapids has the edge on the league championship. A host of closely matched teams will be competing for the other seed in the playoffs.
D10-#1-Coon Rapids (Last week: beat Andover 5-2; Coming week: Can they repeat the Grand Rapids tourney in Bloomington? Draw the 96 Fire, Kennedy and North Metro in pool play)
D10-#2-Elk River (Last week: Lost to St. Cloud 3-2: Coming week: play Andover)
D10-#3-St. Cloud (Last week: Beat Elk River, Beat Champlin Park 4-1; Coming week: play in the Bemidji Tourney, draw Cloquet, Thunder Bay and Roseau in pool play)
D11 Summary: There appears to be only four teams eligible for the three seeds and the top three teams are evenly matched. The only question here is who among the top three get what seed?
D11-#1-Cloquet (Last week: idle. Coming week: play in Bemidji Tourney, draw Thunder Bay, Roseau and St. Cloud in pool play )
D11-#2-Hermantown (Last week: lost to Brainerd 6-4, lost to Little Falls 5-2 and beat Bemidji 10-2. Coming week: play Hibbing and Armstrong)
D11-#3-Duluth East (Last week: Beat Grand Rapids 4-3 on Saturday. Coming week: play in Edina Tourney, draw Rochester 1 (Red), Edina and Fargo Flyers in pool play. Have lost to the Red, Edina and one Fargo team this season)
D12 Summary: At this point, Grand Rapids appears to the only team with the likely number one seed. After the Thunderhawks, it is a toss up for the other two seeds.
D12-#1-Grand Rapids (Last week play Virginia, Greenway, lost to Duluth East. Coming week: Idle)
D12-#2-Virginia (Last week: play Grand Rapids, Duluth Lakers and Eveleth. Coming week: Play in the Bemidji Tourney, in pool play draw Warroad, Keweenaw, Michigan and Grand Forks who is after a third straight Bemidji Tourney title)
D12-#3-Hibbing (Last week: lost to Duluth East 6-0. Coming week: Play International Falls)
East Region (at St. Louis Park Feb 29 to March 2)
D8 Summary: With Lakeville South, Woodbury, Eagan, Lakeville North, Rochester Red and Sibley all competing for two seeds to go to the East Region, this is a tough district.
D8-#1-Lakeville South (Tied West St. Paul 5-5. Coming week: play in Edina Tourney. In pool play draw 95 Fire, Eden Prairie, and Centennial)
D8-#2-Woodbury (Last week: Beat Hastings 6-1, lost to Wayzata 2-0. Coming week: play Sibley and Hudson)
D8-#3-Eagan (Last week Moved to top of D8 (north) standings. Beat Lakeville North 5-3, beat Rosemount 2-0; Coming week, play in Bloomington Tourney. In pool play draw Jefferson, Moundsview and Buffalo)
D3 Summary: Wayzata and Maple Grove are clear favorites for two of the three seeds, Hopkins looks the best of the rest.
D3-#1-Wayzata (Last week: play Armstrong and beat Woodbury 2-0. Coming week: play in Edina Tourney. In pool play draw Colorado Thunderbirds (AAA), Lakeville North and White Bear Lake)
D3-#2-Maple Grove (Last week: idle; Coming week: idle)
D3-#3-Hopkins (Last week: idle; Coming week: Sibley, note Hopkins beat Cloquet 4-3 for third in Grand Rapids Tourney)
D2 (Playoffs Feb 15 to Feb 24). D2 Summary: This district has the most balance among the teams. It shows by the number of tied league games (Moundsview has 4 ties in 6 games). White Bear Lake is struggling and the Edina Tourney will be tough for them. Roseville is starting to come on strong. Moundsview looks tough. Six teams going after three seeds in D2 playoffs.
D2-#1-Forest Lake (Last week: tied WBL 1-1, Lost to Roseville 2-1, Coming week: idle)
D2-#2-North St Paul (Last week: lost to Tartan 2-1 for first lost in league play, beat Stillwater 6-1, Coming week: idle)
D2-#3-Roseville (Last week: beat Forest Lake 2-1, Coming week: idle, tied Woodbury 2-2 earlier this month, WBL moved to top of D2 standings but has been stuggling over all)
South Region (at Chaska Feb 29 to March 2)
D6 (Playoffs Feb 9 to Feb 17). D6 Summary: D6 is one district where the teams particularly get tougher as the season progresses. D6 teams that only marginally improve start to find the D6 schedule tougher in the second half. Edina and Apple Valley have played consistently within D6 and appear to have the edge. But Jefferson, Burnsville, Chaska, Eden Prairie, Minnetonka and Prior Lake are all good teams with potential of taking one of the three South Region seeds. This makes the D6 playoffs, as always, a rugged double elimination affair.
D6-#1-Edina (Last week: Beat Chaska 3-1; Coming week: Play in own tourney. In pool play the Hornets draw Duluth East, Rochester 1(Red) and Fargo Flyers (runner-up in Moorhead Tourney and leading south division of North Dakota peewee A hockey). Edina beat Duluth East and Rochester earlier this year)
D6-#2-Apple Valley (Last week: Lost to 95 Fire 3-2, Beat Shakopee 7-0 and Jefferson 4-3 in OT, Coming week: play Bloomington Tourney. In pool play draw Minnetonka, Highland and Tartan)
D6- #3-Eden Prairie (Last week: Beat Kennedy 11-3, Lost to Prior Lake 3-2, play Edina Tourney. Coming week: In pool play draw Lakeville South, 95 Fire and Centennial)
D4 Summary: D4 is combined with D8, but not for playoffs. That would make any team slightly schizophrenic. The D4 teams should show a lot of improvements over the rest of the season. But which teams will show up playoff ready to compete for the two seeds to the south region? District 4 requires all D4 teams to report all games played to D4 including tournament and scrimmages. Why? For purposes of seeding teams for playoff.
D4-#1-Faribault (Lost to Orono 2-1, beat Farmington 4-2 and beat Highland 5-2 in New Ulm Tourney previous week, this week idle; Coming week: play Winona and Redwood Falls)
D4-#2-New Prague (played in Red Wing tourney, lost to Cottage Grove 6-1, lost to Waterloo Ia 4-3 and beat St. Paul Johnson 7-1, this week idle; Coming week play Rochester 1 (Red))
D1 Summary: D1 has no teams clearly emerging for the three seeds they have to the south region outside of Mpls Park. This is one district where team improvement over the next six weeks could mean a visit to Chaska.
D1-#1-Mpls Park (Last week: St. Paul Johnson, Coming week: playing Arvada Colorado AA )
D1-#2-Irondale (Last week: idle, Coming week: idle)
D1-#3-Como (Last week: idle; Coming week: idle)
West Region (at Brainerd Feb 29 to March 2)
D5 (Playoffs Feb 17 to Feb 24). D5 summary: Halfway through the D5 schedule and four teams have winning records (Mound Westonka, Buffalo, Sartell and River Lakes). Will they be the ones competing for the two seeds for a trip to Brainerd?
D5-#1-Mound Westonka (Last week: tied Crow River 4-4; Coming week: play in Bemidji Tourney. Draw Bemidji, Marquette and Devils Lake in pool play)
D5-#2-Buffalo (Last week: beat Willmar 5-4; Coming week: play in Bloomington Tourney. Draw Eagan, Moundsview and Jefferson)
D15 summary: Another balanced league with any of the six teams potentially grabbing one of the three seeds and making the trip to Brainerd except Brainerd (the West Region could be a home tourney for them). Moorhead had a good trip to the cities a week ago, Little Falls has been coming on, Fergus Falls had a good Moorhead Tourney and Brainerd just beat Hermantown. Alex could be lying in the weeds.
D15-#1-Moorhead (Last week: play TRF, Fergus Falls, EGF; Coming week: idle.)
D15-#2-Little Falls (This week: beat Fergus Falls; Coming week: ?)
D15-#3-Fergus Falls (This week: lost to Little Falls 5-2; Coming week: play Moorhead and Fargo Raiders)
D16 Summary: Halfway through the D16 schedule, Warroad, TRF and Crookston lead the league in points, but Roseau and EGF have posted few league games. That does not summarize the D16 playoffs with Roseau and EGF likely to grab each a seed and the other three teams scrambling for the third.
D16-#1-Roseau (Last week: Beat TRF 10-3; Coming week: play in Bemidji Tourney. In pool play draw Thunder Bay, St. Cloud and Cloquet)
D16-#2-East Grand Forks (Last week: Beat Crookston 2-1; Coming week: play Hallock and Moorhead )
D16-#3-TRF (Last week: lost to Roseau and beat Crookston 6-2; Coming week: play Moorhead and Hallock)
Based on the above, one can now project each regional ranking (I have only rated the top 5).
North Region Overall Rankings: D10 is up and D11 and D12 are down this week. A good Bemidji Tourney for Cloquet and a good Edina Tourney for Duluth East could change this.
1-Coon Rapids*
2-Elk River*
3-Grand Rapids
4-Cloquet
5-Hermantown
East Region Overall Rankings: At this point, it is just a guess. There is a good possibility that all eight regional teams entered could win one of the two seeds to state. The D2 teams are improving.
1-Lakeville South*
2-Wayzata*
3-Woodbury
4-Maple Grove
5-Eagan
South Region Overall Rankings: D6 takes the state seeds unless the other two districts improve.
1-Edina*
2-Apple Valley*
3-Eden Prairie
4-Fairbault
5-Mpls Park
West Region Overall Rankings: Probably the region that has the most turmoil. The Bemidji Tourney is tourney for D16 to shine with a D16 team in each pool. A good Bemidji tourney will probably make Roseau a favorite here. Warroad is in the same tourney with Crookston. Mound Westonka will be carrying the flag for D5 in the Bemidji tourney.
1-Moorhead*
2-Roseau*
3-Little Falls
4-Mound Westonka
5-EGF
*Projected State Tourney Teams
Happy New Year!

According to the Minnesota Handbook, the 2008 pairings are as follows:
W1 vs S2
N1 vs E2
S1 vs W2
E1 vs N2
If you assume thats order for quarterfinal play, its sets up the following bracket play based on my current projections
Moorhead vs Apple Valley
Coon Rapids vs Wayzata
Edina vs Roseau (I would like to see this happen)
Lakeville South vs Elk River
Thanks for the question

12/31/07 Happy New Year
The following summarizes the District by top teams and what they have done in the last week and what they will be doing this week. I have grouped the Districts into Regions they will be playing to go to state. I have added a ranking of the top teams in each region at the end of this to get to the potential state entries and based on the state seedings have projected the Peewee A state tourney quarterfinals.
North Region (at Cloquet Feb 29 to March 2)
D10 Summary: There are 12 teams in the league playing a 22 game league schedule. The league champion advances to the North Region automatically, leaving the remaining teams playing for one seed. As a result of last week’s league games, Coon Rapids has moved to the top of the standings and has opened a small gap on the rest of the league. The league will be very busy over the next 5 ½ weeks as they play 66 more games to determine regular season district championship.
D10-#1-Coon Rapids (Last week: Beat the 96 Fire 5-3, beat Kennedy 4-0 and beat North Metro 3-0 in pool play. Lost to 96 Fire 2-0 in quarterfinal bracket play. Coming week: play Rogers and Champlin Park in league play). The lost to the Fire ended a nice run.
D10-#2-Elk River (Last week: beat Andover 3-1; Coming week: play Woodbury; play Centennial)
D10-#3-St. Cloud (Last week: played in the Bemidji Tourney, lost to Cloquet 4-2, beat Thunder Bay(Fort William) 7-3 and lost to Roseau 8-2 in pool play: In #3 seed bracket beat Devils Lake 3-2 and Thunder Bay 9-2. Coming week play Centennial and Anoka)
D11 Summary: No change as these three teams will be playing for the three D11 seeds. Cloquet may have turned the corner winning the Bemidji Tourney. Hermantown have been playing well, but where’s Duluth East at?
D11-#1-Cloquet (Last week: played in Bemidji Tourney, beat Thunder Bay 10-1, Roseau 8-5 and St. Cloud 4-2 in pool play. In #1 Seed Bracket beat Mound Westonka 7-1 and beat Keneewaw (Michigan) 7-0 to take first. Coming week: play Duluth East and play in own tourney )
D11-#2-Hermantown (Last week beat LOW 4-1: beat Hibbing 5-1, Armstrong 2-1 and Duluth Lakers 4-0: Coming week; play Grand Rapids and Duluth Lakers)
D11-#3-Duluth East (Last week: In Edina Tourney tied Fargo Flyers 2-2, lost to Edina 7-1 and tied Rochester Red 2-2 in pool play. Coming week: play Cloquet.
D12 Summary: No change. Grand Rapids remains unchallenged in this district.
D12-#1-Grand Rapids (Last week: played Duluth Lakers; Coming week: Play Hermantown, Eveleth and Virginia. Still recovering from getting beat by Coon Rapids and Hopkins in their own tourney two weeks ago?)
D12-#2-Virginia (Last week: Play in the Bemidji Tourney, in pool lost to Warroad 5-2, Keweenaw, Michigan 5-4 and Grand Forks 4-3. Lost in #4 Seed Bracket to Crookston 8-2 and beat Bemidji 5-2; Coming Week: )
D12-#3-Hibbing (Last week: lost to Hermantown, lost to Armstrong 5-3 and played LOW. Coming week: Play International Falls)
East Region (at St. Louis Park Feb 29 to March 2)
D8 Summary: Lakeville South never got off the dime in the Edina Tourney, Eagan only made the quarterfinals in the Bloomington Tourney. The one bright spot was Lakeville North tying Wayzata in the Edina Tourney pool play 5-5. Rochester Red played in the Edina Tourney and lost to Edina, tied Fargo Flyers and Duluth East. The D8 is down this week.
D8-#1-Lakeville South (This week: tied West St. Paul 5-5, played in Edina Tourney. In pool play lost to 95 Fire 5-2, lost to Eden Prairie 6-2, and beat Centennial 7-3. Coming week: Play Lakeville North. Remain #1 because they have not lost in league play 6-0-3).
D8-#2-Eagan (Last week: played in Bloomington Tourney, in pool play tied Jefferson 5-5, beat Moundsview 6-1 and beat Buffalo 7-1. In bracket play, beat Moundsview 3-0 and lost to Jefferson 3-2; Coming week: play Woodbury and Sibley. Moved up because they also have not lost in league play 8-0-1)
D8-#3-Woodbury (Last week: play beat Sibley 5-0, and beat Hudson 7-0: Coming week play Elk River and Eagan; A talented team that is struggling)
D3 Summary: Unchanged. Wayzata and Maple Grove are clear favorites for two of the three seeds, Hopkins looks the best of the rest.
D3-#1-Wayzata (Last week: Played in Edina Tourney. In pool play beat the Colorado Thunderbirds 3-1, tied Lakeville North 5-5 and beat White Bear Lake 6-0. In the semifinals, beat Eden Prairie 5-1 and lost to 95 Fire 5-2. Won second place.)
D3-#2-Maple Grove (Last week: idle; Coming week: play Colorado Thunder and North Metro)
D3-#3-Hopkins (Last week: Tied Sibley 0-0: Coming week; play North Metro)
D2 (Playoffs Feb 15 to Feb 24). D2 Summary: Though this district has the most balance among the teams, it had a down week. White Bear Lake had tough going in the Edina Tourney and Moundsview had equally tough going in the Bloomington Tourney. Roseville looks to be the strongest at the start of this week even though White Bear Lake is leading the league with four games to play.
D2-#1-Roseville (Last week: idle; Coming week: play North St. Paul )
D2-#2-North St Paul (Last week: idle; Coming week: play Roseville)
D2-#3-Forest Lake (Last week: idle; Coming week: play Stillwater and play in New Richmond (Wisconsin) Tournament )
South Region (at Chaska Feb 29 to March 2)
D6 (Playoffs Feb 9 to Feb 17). D6 Summary: D6 was the winner this week. Two D6 teams were in the Edina Tourney Semifinals and three D6 teams were in the Bloomington Tourney semifinals. Congratulations to all those teams. The ratings are left unchanged. Edina remains #1 and Apple Valley #2 until they fall within D6. But Eden Prairie, Chaska and Burnsville are all pushing as the season enters the last month. This week has several key games in D6.
D6-#1-Edina (Last week: Lost to Colorado Thunder 2-1, played in own tourney. In pool play beat Duluth East 7-1, Rochester 1(Red) 5-1 and Fargo Flyers 3-0. Lost to 95 Fire in semifinals 8-5, lost to Eden Prairie 4-3 in the third place game. Coming week: Play Apple Valley, Prior Lake and Minnetonka)
D6-#2-Apple Valley (Last week: Played in Bloomington Tourney. In pool beat Minnetonka 5-2, beat Highland 5-0 and beat Tartan 5-0. In bracket play quarterfinals, beat Eastview 1-0, semifinals beat Jefferson 2-0 and lost to Chaska 6-4 in the championship game. Coming week: Play Edina, Eastview and Eden Prairie)
D6- #3-Eden Prairie (Last week: Played in Edina Tourney. In pool play beat Lakeville South, tied 95 Fire and beat Centennial. In bracket play, lost to Wayzata and beat Edina 4-3 for third place. Coming week: Play Jefferson and Apple Valley)
D4 Summary: D4 is combined with D8, but not for playoffs. Faribault and New Prague look the best. Mankato may be making a move to challenge.
D4-#1-Faribault (Last week: Coming week: Play New Ulm)
D4-#2-New Prague (Last week, beat Owatonna 2-1 and Farmington 3-2. Lost to Farmington 4-1; Coming week: Play Armstrong and Mason City)
D1 Summary: I saw Highland play some tough games in the Bloomington Tourney. They have a good chance at one of the D1 seeds. Besides Mpls Park and Highland, who else can emerge? Irondale remains idle this week.
D1-#1-Mpls Park (Last week: playing Arvada Colorado AA; Coming week: play Como)
D1-#2-Highland (Last week: Played in Bloomington Tourney. In pool play lost to Apple Valley, Tartan 5-0 and Tonka 3-2. In sportsman game, play Buffalo, Coming week: idle)
D1-#3-Irondale (Last week: idle; Coming week: idle)
West Region (at Brainerd Feb 29 to March 2)
D5 (Playoffs Feb 17 to Feb 24). D5 summary: Halfway through the D5 schedule and four teams have winning records (Mound Westonka, Buffalo, Sartell and River Lakes). But Mound Westonka and Buffalo have opened a significant points lead in district play over Sartell, River Lakes and Crow River.
D5-#1-Mound Westonka (Last week: Played in Bemidji Tourney. Beat Bemidji 9-4, Tied Marquette 4-4 and beat Devils Lake 7-3 in pool play to gain the #1 seed. In bracket play lost to Cloquet 7-1 and played Hastings. Coming week: Play River Lakes and Litchfield)
D5-#2-Buffalo (Last week: Played in Bloomington Tourney. Lost to Eagan 7-1, lost to Moundsview 4-1, lost to Jefferson 7-0 and play Highland. Coming week: Play Hutchinson)
D15 summary: Most of the teams were idle over the holidays.
D15-#1-Fergus Falls (This week: beat Moorhead 3-1 and Fargo Raiders 5-3: Coming week: Play the Fargo Angels)
D15-#2-Moorhead (Last week: Lost to EGF 4-1 and Fergus Falls 3-1; Coming week: )
D15-#3-Little Falls (This week: Coming week: ?)
D16 Summary: D16 had a down week in the Bemidji Tourney. Two teams ended up with a #4 seed, one team with a #3 seed and one with a #2 seed. EGF was the districts saving grace beating Morehead at Morehead. Looks to be a two team race with Roseau and EGF.
D16-#1-Roseau (Last week: Played in Bemidji Tourney. In pool play beat Thunder Bay 12-1 and St. Cloud 8-2 and lost to Cloquet 8-5. In #2 Seeded bracket, beat Marquette 8-3 and Superior 4-1 for 5th. Their win over St. Cloud was impressive, but their loss to Cloquet makes one wonder)
D16-#2-East Grand Forks (Last week: beat Grafton 5-1, Hallock 14-1 and Moorhead 4-1; Coming week: )
D16-#3-TRF (Last week: play Moorhead and Hallock; Coming week: play LOW and Hallock)
Based on the above, one can now project each regional ranking (I have only rated the top 5).
North Region Overall Rankings: Coon Rapids run of good games finally ended in the Bloomington Tourney. That’s hockey. A team can’t win them all. Cloquet won the Bemidji Tourney and may have turned a corner on this season.
1-Coon Rapids*
2-Cloquet*
3-Elk River
4-Grand Rapids
5-Hermantown
East Region Overall Rankings: D8 teams were down this week and D3 (Wayzata had a good tourney taking second) up. That reflects in the ratings. Eagan could have moved up if they had gone just a little further in the Bloomington Tourney. Roseville has had a good couple of weeks. They are playing well right now.
1-Wayzata*
2-Lakeville South*
3-Roseville
4-Eagan
5-Woodbury
South Region Overall Rankings: D6 takes the state seeds. The first sign of the other Districts improving was Highland’s play in the Bloomington Tourney.
1-Edina*
2-Apple Valley*
3-Eden Prairie
4-Fairbault
5-Mpls Park
West Region Overall Rankings: The D16 teams didn’t shine at Bemidji. Roseau beat every team by a good score indicating they have the ability to score, but couldn’t beat Cloquet. The other D16 teams entered in the Bemidji tourney struggled. Two good southern teams, Hastings and Mound Westonka, took #1 seeds. Turmoil still reigns, but one answer could come when EGF plays in the Hermantown Tourney in two weeks. They draw Anoka in the quarterfinals and Lakeville South/Duluth Lakers winner in the semifinals.
1-Roseau*
2-Fergus Falls*
3-EGF
4-Moorhead
5-Mound Westonka
*Projected State Tourney Team draw, W1 versus S2, N1 versus E2, S1 versus West 2 and E1 versus N2
Roseau vs Apple Valley
Coon Rapids vs Lakeville South
Edina vs Fergus Falls
Wayzata vs Cloquet
Changes from last week, Cloquet replaced Elk River and Roseau replaced Moorhead.

D3-#3-Hopkins (Last week: Tied Sibley 0-0: Coming week; play North Metro)
D2 (Playoffs Feb 15 to Feb 24). D2 Summary: Though this district has the most balance among the teams, it had a down week.

Since I haven't seen them play, I am looking for something that says they are going to be there at the end. I would like to see them play in the state.WatchDog'sRight wrote:What are you wondering about - maybe I can help you out.frederick61 wrote:

Looking at the month of December, the Rams have lost to Grand Rapids 5-1, Maple Grove 5-1, Moorhead 4-3 in OT, and Cloquet 8-5. They hold quality wins over Duluth East 5-1, Anoka 4-1, and EGF (4-0 and 6-3). Their overall record is 16-4. In the games against the teams not mentioned here they are winning by an average of 9-2.
That indicates to me that their defense is not being tested in most games they are playing and winning. Cloquet has some good forwards who can skate, but they came into the Bemidji tourney on a three game losing streak and playing under .500 hockey. Cloquet has the horses so maybe they all came together in the tourney. That happens.
Roseau in giving up eight goals to Cloquet is troubling. Since kids develop during the season, the Roseau defense may just need some more playing together. But the view from the south is that the north kids can get a lot of indoor ice to scrimmage around together.
Given that they are comfortable with each other on the ice, can they come together on defense. But the only team I know in the Roseau Tourney that will challenge their defense is Grand Rapids. The only team I know in the Warroad Tourney that could do the same is Elk River. That is what is troubling.
