It was his sophomore year because he was fifteen and the the minimum age requirement for the QJHML is 16...no exceptions (obviously). He then played two years in the QJHML, and then to the NHL.

sicknasty7722 are you joking about the exceptionsk, because John Tavares is an exception.
Tavares is the first exception that they have made. After realizing their error in not allowing Crosby to be drafted (and play) at a younger age - and the threat of losing Tavares to another league - they granted him exceptional player status.
