Goaler, West must have really impressed you Tuesday night. I have to agree with you though, they are a blast to watch. I really want to see how they react in a tight game and I was expecting that in both the NP and Owatonna game. Northfield played RW tight so I expect this might be a closr game than you think. Big question is can the West goaler extend his shutout streak to 4.

WEST

Post by jackstraw »

Consistency will be the test for the West goaltender. He is in what could be a tough situation. I have only seen the Owatonna game and if my memory serves me correctly I saw only 1 quality scoring chance the entire game. There were other saves, but basically nothing. The 1 good chance was towards the latter part of the 3rd and he seemed very focused the entire time. I have to wonder what he does all that time with no one to talk to?

Perhaps he thinks about his next posting on this forum?

Davey I saw West several times last year and more than I cared to this summer, so I know what to expect. And I've seen Northfield play this year too. So it might not get to 10, but then again, it might.

Just think if West has the early game on semi-final Saturday....they would have to get up very early, try to get rid of their bus legs and the crowd would most likely be against them.
Granted Red Wing and Lourdes do benefit from having the section playoffs being in Rochester, West isn't at too much of a disadvantage. West has handled two pretty good teams on the road this year (NP 7-1 Owatonna 7-0). In both of those games i think they west fans overpowered the home teams fans with a ratio of 5(+):1 for the home team. So i dont think the crowd is going to be an issue. These west fans like what they see in their team and if the west team gets going you won't be able to shut these kids up.

Both of those were night games....

Goldy313 - What time will the first semi-final be? It West has to play the early game, they will have to get up early, take a longer bus ride than normal and play a great team. It will be different. Plus, the Rochester fans come out in HUGE numbers for sections games, as will the Red Wing fans.

West will have to beat Albert Lea and Lourdes to secure the top seed in the section....time will tell.

Big games tonight and I am interested in seeing the scores.

Northfield

West 6, Northfield 3

Sorry Northfield, I didn't give you enough credit. It's good to see somebody put some goals up on West for a change.

Goaler West came out flying and were up 3-0 two minutes into the game. Played probably the best period I have seen them play. Score could have been 6-0 had they converted on numerous chances. Started the second period with 2 more quick goals and then probably played the worst 10 minutes I have seen them play. I give Northfield alot of credit because after they scored the first one, they put it on West pretty good and got 2 more. West seemed to regroup pretty well in the 3rd and were never really in any trouble. Overall I think this will help West in the long run as this was the first time they faced any adversity.

Some thoughts on Albert Lea/Lourdes.... Lourdes converted on their chances, AL didn't. Both had some great opportunities, the game was closer than the score indicated. Neither goalie was overly impressive, both were solid though. Lourdes 2nd and 3rd goals were scored when, for some reason, Distad got caught flopping after a puck out of the crease area. When he's on his knees he's huge and covers the net well I don't know why he flops and gives up that adavntage. AL missed a couple of wrap arounds where Lourdes goalie got caught out of position, had any of those gone in AL would have taken a lead. Both teams skate well, Lourdes defense isn't great and they, like every team in Rochester, have a penchant for giving up the odd man rush way more than should be expected.

Early in the season this kind of puts the section into West & Lourdes out front. AL has West twice yet to change that.

In years past the 1 & 4 seeeds played the afternoon games, the 2 & 3 seeds the evening games. (just the brackets, I know about upsets). Lourdes has always drawn flies compared to the other 1A teams when the games were here, being outdrawn by Northfield pretty badly the last playoff game I remember. Red Wing always drew very well, probably only being outdrawn by JM.

The way JM and Centruy are playing and given the fact Mayo doesn't draw well the A games could very well be the games with the most fans. Austin used to draw very well, but they're not a top 4 team nor an AA team. Farmington, and Lakeville North bring a fair number but nothing close to what teams like Red Wing, Northfield, West, JM, Austin, and Century have.

west

Wow .. it sounds like West nearly blew out Northfield in the first five minutes. I am surprised that Northfield stayed with them. I don't think they have the skating team to stick with West, but I give them credit for fighting to stay alive against West.

Tell me, did they shoot high to score?

1 Goal just off the glove
1 goal on a breakway (deke)
1 goal on a scramble out front (not a high shot)

Also, Northfield cannot skate with West, but for ten minutes West stopped moving their feet and when that happens anything can happen. Northfield played hard and capitalized on some turnovers.

enough talk about west

Red Wing beat Farmington 6-2. Very good game for RW. A nice victory after they didn't play so well their last 2 games.

I agree! They have not played a good team yet. Northfield is an average team at best. Owatonna is the toughest team they have played all year and nothing against Owatonna but that is not saying anything.

WOW! It looks as if nobody will give West any of the credit they deserve. All we ever hear about is how West has no class and how West has played no competition (o.k. i'll give you that one) but, when are people gonna stop whining and start learning that when you play the Scarlets you better bring your "A" game?

west credit

Post by goaler »

I give West credit, but after last season they are going to have to prove they can win the tough ones, starting with Albert Lea. I think they can do it, but we'll wait and see.

I am surprised that they didn't blow out Northfield, which played its 9th or 10th grade goalie, and really cannot skate with West. But hey, they did win the game, so ...

even though i hate mankato west, i think they deserve some credit. they are 7-0 and have yet to prove they are undisciplined. i mean ya they have played some weak teams, but how come when owatonna beat a couple average teams, they got all this credit, but when west beat an undefeated team on the road, tnhey get nothing. i mean come on people, and they completely out played northfield except for that second period lapse, but its high school, not many teams can play 3 perfect periods of hockey every night! mankato west has my attention and i wish them the best of luck.

When a good team plays a lesser team they are suppose to win, West is doing that. I give them credit.
