I don't know if the guy yelling was his kid or not. I'm not from Holy Angels or New Prague (and Davey is right, I'm not from Mankato either). He was just down from me and he had the same look at it as I did. He was pretty steamed about it, I saw him leaving and he was still fuming.

I'm just glad for both kids that nothing horrible came from it. Cause no matter how it came down, I am certain that the NP player did not intend for anything bad to happen. It's an intense game, they were going hard for the puck and things happen.

The guy was furious. He didnt need to be throwing off the F bomb, and stuff like that. He was, in my opinion, very disrespectful to everyone around him, he could have showed some class but didnt.

Thanks for clarifying my less-than-precise English TPS. Holy Angels is probably a place you want to go to, not be from.

I haven't seen Lourdes or Red Wing this year. Does anyone who has seen them think they can prevent West from winning the section? I have seen AL, and my opinion is that they don't have quite enough to beat West out, but I reserve my opinion on that until West beats them of course.

I thought New Prague might have a chance on a rematch, but I think they make too many defensive mistakes to beat West this year. Holy Angels didn't blow them away, but they took advantage of some loose defensive play to score. New Prague can skate, and they are young and learning, but West is so explosive you've got to play that top line very tight and error-free. If you make mistakes they'll tic-tac-toe you to death, and I suspect that is probably what happened to New Prague in their meeting.

By the way, New Prague is playing two freshman on its top line with junior Tyler Lapic. How good are these guys going to be next year? Barger is coaching the heck out of that team, and I wouldn't want to play them next year.

Also, Cary Eades from UND was scouting, but I didn't bug him to ask who he was looking at.

LaCrescent is in the Championship of the Worthington Tournament. The only reason I bring them up is they're 7-2-1. They don't play any teams in 1A and they play a pretty weak schedule but they're going to end up with a pretty impressive record that may finish up around 20 wins. They're losses are to Wisconsin's #4 rated team and 5-3 to Winona. They have Winona again and Winona really isn't a slouch this season, AL beat them by 2 and Faribault by 1. Should LaCrescent knock off Winona things migh get interesting. LaCrescent isn't a top 4 or even top 6 team but might will get a home pigtail game and could give a scare to someone.

Goldy - Although I agree with you about LaCrescent possibly scaring someone - especially a team that looks past them....how can you say this about Winona on this thread while claiming that Mayo's 8-1 win over them isn't worth anything in another thread? No matter what spin you put on this one, you are contradicting yourself here.
I agree, Winona is not the pushover they have been before - in fact I predict that they will beat JM this year and finish 7th in the Big Nine.
With that being said, you now have to recoginize that Mayo put up an impressive win against Winona by beating them 8-1 (not to mention their impressive win over Century tonight in the Kiwanis)

I bet if you checked their strength of schedule it it the easiest in Minnesota. You can't think that they will be a threat in 1A...I have heard of teams that won't play them because their coach is such a melon...Other coaches/teams just laugh at him.

Before people burn me at the stake, I put Albert Lea ahead of Lourdes due to each teams performance in the Kiwanis tournament. A.L. controls the play but loses in overtime to Falls in the finals, Lourdes lays a huge egg (8-2) to Denfeld after doing the same thing A.L. did to Falls.

I understand that it's too early to talk about these types of things, but this can be good board talk when your bored.

The West/A.L. games and West/Lourdes games will have great impact in the future.

What about Red Wing? I don't know enough about them.

Red Wing knows how to win. I think the only problem that Red Wing has always had is the tendency to be inconsistent. Last year especially when they played STA in the section final - the second year in a row. The score was 1-1 during the first, 3-2 during the second, and by the third period, the score was 7-2 in favor of the cadets. Last night at home, Red Wing lost to Tartan 4-5. You wouldn't have thought the score to be so close by the way the wingers played, though. They picked up 3 goals in the third period giving them a chance to tie Tartan,.... but they didn't, obviously.

Red Wing has a great program. It was started by Jim Pohl, whose son Johnny went on to the Gophs and now plays for the Maple Leafs. I think just having that home-grown hockey program has really given the players something to look up to, as most of them were in the program when Johnny led the team to state, and eventually, the '97 championship. The Applebees in Red Wing has a Johnny Pohl shrine in it. He's a hometown hero. It's not like Red Wing regularly grows NHL players, so having just one is really special to the city. The team hasn't been to state since the '02 team played Totino Grace for the championship and took second place.

They have average speed and ability, but they have great team chemistry and really play just to play. They have always played blue collar hockey, but have been held back in the past couple of years with more stingy rules.

They have a pretty solid goalie in Nate Foot, who saw a decent amount of varsity time last year. One of their back-up goalies, Amendolar, has some great potential as a freshman who has seen considerable ice time, and started out the season while Foot was recovering from an ACL injury.

All in all, the team feels they've been long past due a trip to state, and it shows in their faces. I know that in hockey it can sometimes be detrimental when players get emotional, but this team has always been full of heart.

How about some insightful reviews on the Section 1A teams as we approach the half way point of the season? Specifically, it would be nice to get honest postings on how your team has fared thus far, and why. Example: doubleOHseven's analysis of the Red Wing program. Let's hear from Albert Lea (JoshDog, are you out there?), Lourdes, New Prague, Mankato West, Mankato East, Northfield, etc.

The tigers got off to a decent start considering that they were missing a good number of reulars because of a problem that doesn't need to be discussed.

They suffered a tough loss to a hard working Owatonna team in their home opener.

They went on beating the teams they should and then they got to the big showdown with Lourdes in Rochester. I think that they proved that they can skate with them. I think the shots were pretty even, difference being that Lourdes buried 5 goals to Albert Lea's 1.

They returned home and beat Century for the first time in 11 games. This was a boost to a team that needed a spark. They rode this momentum into the Kiwanis tournament defeating a bad Princeton team 11-1, a tough Duluth Denfeld team 3-2, and lost a heartbreaker to International Falls 3-2 in overtime for the championship.

Overall:
Goaltending- Albert Lea has been rotating goalies, as they have in the past when they've had success. Waalkens and Distad are solid between the pipes and are really never a question mark.

Defensemen: They've rotated a couple in. They're finally starting to get settled. Look for more offense from the blue line in the second half for the tigers.

Forwards: Probably the strong point for the club. As with the D, they've experimented a little but have gone back to what worked for them throughout the summer.

Though biased, I like this Tiger team. One thing you can count on year in and year out is consitently solid coaching. Roy and his staff might be one of the best in the state. I definately think this team will be right there come tournament time.

Golfreak, good post on AL. Typical AL squad that works their butts off and has really good goaltending. My guess is that Waalkens will be the guy come Sectionals. Roy and is staff are great.

I will give you my insight on West.
Everybody is making a big issue so far of their schedule. Granted, not the toughest so far, but they have beaten the teams they should have and most by convincing margins but they have some tough games in front of then including AL twice, Lourdes , Mayo and Century.

Overall analysis.

Goaltending. so far has been solid. This was a question mark coming in. Goaler says shoot high if you want to beat him

Defense. Not one guy in the group that will wow you, but they have been steady and know their roles. They get the puck to the scorers

Forwards. Definate strenght of this team. Very deep group. They pretty much roll 3 lines when even strength. Can score goals in bunches. Very unselfish. Everybody talks about Litchfield and Leivermann, but probably
one of the best is Anderson. He anchors the PK and 2nd line. Non stop motor.
They have had some discipline issues as far as penalties go, but that issue has been taken care of hopefully.

No argument from Leivermann. Quick and decisive call from the officials Check from behind with a potential for injury, automatic call and the refs were very decisive abot the 5 minute major and game DQ. Leivermann is a great kid and leader, no need to bash when you don't know the facts. Kid did not say a word to the refs

now that may be the case skill wise, but didnt faribault beat northfield? now in my books even if northfield may be the better team, faribault beat them so they should be ahead in the seeding. just my opinion though, otherwise good call on the predictions.
