I was outside the Proctor Arena when it happened, as my son had hockey practice.
One of the PAHA people came out and told us that one of the teams was upset with the officiating and walked off the ice. The claim was that the game was out of hand and too dangerous.
I went into the arena and talked to parents from both teams. The St. Francis parents I talked to didn't seem too pleased with the whole thing. Delano's parents were humored.
Anyway, Delano was up 3-0 when I went in the arena to check the score. That was probably 20 minutes before I found out St. Francis had left, and by the time I found out, they were long gone from the arena, so I didn't get a chance to track down their coach.
From what I was told, they will show up for the third-place game today.
I'll avoid further comment on the situation, as I didn't see more than a few seconds of the game - enough to check the score and run back outside to my kid's practice. But I've never heard of this happening in a varsity high school hockey game. We've all seen some bad officiating at the high school level, but it's hard to imagine a game being that out of hand or dangerous. That's all I'll say because I wasn't in the arena to watch the game.
Very odd situation.

I personally know the two officials that worked that game and I have a hard time believing that they would let things get out of control as both tend to have a tighter standard. I especially think it was an odd move as the coach pulled his team in the 1st period.
I worked a couple St. Francis JV games and found them to be a little less physical than their opponents, so maybe they were not ready for the physicallity of northern hockey.
I really don't think that it was a great move to pull the team off the ice. Generally, this tends to do more harm than good as the coach will now miss todays game.

That would make an easier game for everyone.BIAFP wrote:theref wrote:Haha, yeah, he is pretty brutal, but he wasn't reffing the St. Francis game, so I'm not sure what he has to do with this.AngusYoung wrote:You've obviously never seen that Simon kid from Duluth ref a game - brutal.

Good thing or St. Francis would never have come out for warmups.

Delano was winning 3-0 with 3 minutes left in the first period. A St. Francis player went for a check and completely missed crashing into the boards ( I heard after they left that he broke his arm because of the collision). The coach called a timeout and started yelling at the refs. He was yelling "SAFETY FIRST SAFETY FIRST!!!!" Then he got tossed out of the game, which led to the players skating off the ice. Pretty pointless to even go out and start playing, although we got to scrimmage ourselves after St. Francis left which was kinda fun...
