STA Coach Tom Vannelli commenting in today's Pioneer Press about Anders Lee transferring to Edina:

"But hockey aspirations can be pretty big and overwhelming and can take a front seat unfortunately in some cases."

Vanelli's got a lot of gall making a halfway critical comment about kids transferring for hockey. STA is loaded with kids who started high school elsewhere.

I'm a big fan of private schools and really don't care when or why kids and their parents want go to private schools. There have been private schools in this country for hundreds of years. Families are free to send their kids to them for whatever reasons they want, including hockey.

Vannelli sounds like a jerk here. He also acts like one behind the bench with his yelling at officials. Can someone from STA tell me that he's really a good guy ?

From what I heard, Anders actually transferred more for football. He wanted to play quarterback and St Thomas had him playing as a defensive back. Is a nice story though.

stpaul, STA is not loaded with kids that started high school elsewhere. I can think of only 2.

I cant figure out the reason for this article.

Is it to glamorize the return of the prodigal son or what?

Rubbing my temples to gain clarity doesn't always work :?

Can someone provide the link so others can know what you are referring to?

He was a squirt in Edina. He's only been in the Edina school system and the STA school system. He went to Edina until about 7th grade(?) and then transferred to STA schools before transferring back prior to this year.

I do know that he played 2 years of Squirts and 2 years of Pee Wees in Edina. Mites I don't know.

He came to Edina as a 4th grader and 1st year squirt, I am pretty sure he went to Blaine before that, but not positive.

He went to STA as an 8th grader. I pretty sure it had to do with a fight with a coach over whether or not he could speed skate and play hockey. I guess STA said you can do both so he left and then the speedskating guys said you have to choose so he played hockey but was already at STA to do both. Thats the story I have heard from a fairly reliable source.

Lee started out in St. Francis, I remember his dad asking which city had a better youth hockey program, Edina or Edina Prairie. His dad has/had a store in the Mall of America, hats I think, which is why they were moving. He went to Edina when he was a squirt.

Anders was a top student at STA. The reasons for leaving was more a case of wanting to finish HS with his friends then to pursue greater "Hockey aspirations" What I noticed in the article is how Anders took the high road in the story appreciating STA, while Vanelli's comments are typical of his arrogant personality. The kid sounds more mature than his former coach.

I had the opportunity to meet Anders Lee during the Elite League this fall and found him to be very impressive, well spoken kid. The fact that he went back to Edina doesn't bother me because he wanted to be with the kids he grew up with. Not to mention he is a tremendous quarterback and was able to run the spread offense Edina uses.

STA also lost another player who is playing very well somewhere else
Justin Faulk
He is the third defenseman at SSP behind Zach Palmquist and Nate Asper and he is getting alot of points.

He woulda been pretty good for STA to have kept, esspecially after they lose Vanelli at the point next year.
