playing after injury

Post by hky120 »

If a player has been injured - do they need a doctor's or trainer's clearance to play again? Are there high school rules about this?

There are certain schools who have rules about it. As far as MSHSL rules I do not believe so. I know that the HS I went to had a policy that if you had to go to a doctor, he had to clear you before you could even practice. I would assume that is the majority rule.

The MSHSL rules say that if a player sees a doctor, for any reason during the season, even a cold or sickness, the doctor must give him a note clearing him to play.

If you get injured in a game, and you are treated by a trainer, you can start to play when ever you feel like it. If you are treated by a doctor, he must okay your re-entry. A doctor is the only person that can mandate you sit out of an athletic event in high school due to an injury.

If a kid goes in to the Dr. for a strep check he needs to get clearance from the Dr. to play? I am guessing that players don't abide by that rule.

If a trainer takes a kid out, like in the case of a hit to the head a player would need clearance from a Dr. in order for that kid to be able to resume his participation with the team.

Most players end up ignoring the rule if the doctor doesn't give them a slip to let them play. The orthopedic doctors usually are very good about making sure they clear players, but E.R. doctors and other doctors they see, don't really know the rule and don't really pay attention.

I am almost positive that a trainer can tell a coach not to play players, but the coach only has to listen to the doctors. Almost all smart coaches will listen to the trainer and do what is in the best interest of the players. Often times, the team doctors are readily available to check on players during games.

Where are the parents? Does the coach know the extent of the injury?

Open for liability I would suspect.

I am guessing trainers pass some paperwork on to the coaches that the player and coaches need to take care of.
