That is how they should depend all high schools games???? What exactly does that mean?
Do you mean decide all high school games that way?
You are obviously not a purist of the sport. A shootout is not the way to determine all high school games. It does work for tournaments when you have to sort of keep a schedule, but do you really want the state title decided that way? Absolutely not!!!
The five OT thriller between Duluth East and Apple Valley decided by a shootout??? Last year's double-OT games between Burnsville and Grand Rapids, then Burnsville and Century? Ick!
The biggest crime in all of hockey history was the Olympics games being decided via shootout between Canada and Sweden. Unlimited OT is the way to decide games that really matter.
Yes, holiday tourneys need a format to decide...but one 8 minute OT? Why not have a full 17 minute OT? Most games would be decided in a pure form by then...if still tied, then a shootout if you must.
As far as the shootout itself, it was not that awesome. A few shooters shot and missed the net. How does that happen? Most that tried to deke had no poise and shot into the goalies leg pads while the top shelf was wide open. It was only exciting when the Fargo South kid scored when he had to keep his team alive, otherwise, there were some very poor efforts by several players.

It's an idea I have been thinking about, too. Now, a shootout is really a display of individual talent. This may bug some people and at first it bothered me, too. But, when you step back and look at it the reason for the shootout is because a TEAM could not outdue the other TEAM, so it is reasonable to go to the next step which would be who has the most talented INDIVIDUALS. It would definitely add some excitement to the game, but I don't know if we will be seeing anything of the sort anytime soon.

The format for that shootout was better than the 1 goal must be answered or the team loses, but I still oppose shootouts. Had that game continued or had been a longer overtime, I'd put my money on Fargo South winning that game. They'd been dominating most of the game, but a shootout can be won by the best team, but gives a team that wouldn't normally have the chances, to win. Of course, it's a quicker way, and obviously more intriguing to the spectators, but I would rather see a game played out. (If I'm not mistaken FS outshot and had control of the puck most of the game, and Buffalo took the shootout)
The short answer is no.
It works in the NHL because the standings are based on points rather than strict W-L. Even if you lose the shootout in the NHL, you're coming away with a point, and you're not being penalized for playing to a draw in regulation.
In high school, if you settled games with a shootout, you're giving a devastating blow to the team that loses in an event that is influenced by individuals instead of the team. You can't do that.

shootout
it also works in the nhl because they own the ice ! At $200 a evening I don't want to see a tie, but I would rather see 4-4, then 3-3, then 2 on 2 then a shootout at the pro level....But now were talking player union rules and heck no, not unless you pay me more.
At the high school level they cannot due that for league games, they don't own the ice.
Gophers..... they should do it at the college division 1 level.
