Pretty stupid question since the terms aren't mutually exclusive. I say (at least per Webster's) high school hockey is a sport and hobby, for boys and girls alike, since a sport is "an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature" and a hobby is "an activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation and not as a main occupation".

I'm assuming that you are trying to be a jerk in somehow trying to demean the girls' game as somehow unworthy of being a sport. The game is competitive, exciting and entertaining. The only problem (if there is one) is the attitude of certain people like you. Its because of people like you that Title IX exists. I'm glad it does.

If it isn't a sport, then neither is Boys' hockey.

Has anyone alerted you to the fact that it's not 1904 anymore, and women are doing all KINDS of stuff now? Like going to school, voting, holding down jobs and supporting families, defending the country in the armed services and running for President?

Or did some girls just make you look stupid on the rink? Get used to it. Based on the question, I'd say you're in for a lifetime of Women making you look bad.

This is true. Many morons are also idiots.

And I would bet he's been embarrassed by girls in more places than just the ice rink.

Opinions that girls hockey isn't a sport are the best example of things ridiculous. Maybe one of the geniuses who think otherwise can explain how / why they conclude girls hockey doesn't qualify as a sport? I'm anxious to hear this brilliant hypothesis.

As long as this thread continues to be kept alive
The Warroad High School boys' team squeaked out a 2-1 victory over the U.S. Olympic women's hockey team. Warroad had 24 shots - U.S. Women's Olympic team had 23 shots.

Everyone is going to have a definition of what a sport is. But there should be no disput that Girls hockey is as much of a sport as any other girls sport. Hobby? are you serious?

Not a hobby either, but some might call it an "activity" as opposed to a true sport. On the other hand, it's a LOT more demanding physically compared to some other "sports" such as golf or bowling.

And the golfers too! I'd like for someone to tell Tiger Woods he's not an athlete or doesn't play a sport.

An old and good friend once told me the difference in sport and athletic event is that in sport you have the abiltiy (within the rules) to effect the outcome of your opponent or said another way to play defense.

Offense and defense.

Hockey - yes.
Dance - no.
Golf - sorry, no.

Bowling - well, yes, now that the previous illegal move of dumping a beer on your opponents multi-colored shoes is acceptable.

Well, that takes out most track events, too !!!
AND singles tennis...which is mostly offense [ulness you just cover your face to stop a volley].
AND gymnastics...unless you are out there tripping your opponent.
AND individual swimming...unless you try to drown the other guy.
What a silly post !!!
