Hi,
Can anyone recommend any off season girls training programs or clinics. I have a 9 year old daughter, first season this year and loves hockey.
She plays softball, but wants to do more hockey after the mite season ends next month. Anyone have a daughter maybe 10- 12 or so that has recent (last 3 years) experiences they can share.
thanks.

Girls Training
Check out Velocity Hockey in Eden Prairie @ www.velocityhockeycenter.com They do alot of Elite High School girls as well youth girls for all parts of the metro area. Brooke White and Winny Brodt are their Head Instructors.
I'm not sure what area you are in so I don't know what's offered, but my daughter, who is now 13, has enjoyed the the summer STP and QuickSkills programs for the last few years.
Depending on what else she has going on, she has done some of the spring & fall 4 on 4 leagues. She also plays tennis and softball so during those seasons those come first, but she can usually get to most of the 4 on 4 sessions.

Here's what I know...
First thing to do is start asking around. Find out what the other kids in your area are doing. We have an only child and ZERO hockey parent experience, and we missed out on Spring and Fall hockey first time around. You really need to stay aggressive because many parents treat this info like it's the combination to their personal safe.
If you can find a group of kids who do Spring and Fall MASH or Showcase with a good Father coach (we have been lucky with a large number of them), they can put together a really good off-season program, and everyone shares costs. We've had Karns and Steffen teach our MASH girls in conjunction with the league - the girls still skate together, and it's been good. Quick find the other good girls' families in your league and ask what they're up to this summer. It absolutely isn't too early to start in on this.
We tried Minnesota Made, and the two sessions there were somewhat disappointing, but maybe others have had better experiences - I'm not sure yet that MM "gets" girls. You can't drag 'em out and yell at 'em like boys.
We have had her play some 3-on-3 at Velocity EP, and it's a real good experience, lots of time with the puck.

For the multiple sport athlete who wants top notch hockey training in the summer try OS training. They do a good job of skating edge work and fundamentals. Run by local female hockey players. Very flexible and accommodating. Historically they have run a southern (St. Thomas/Bloomington Ice Garden) and northern camp (Fogerty).
